Hi I Am Flying Down For The 93.1 Concert At The End Of The Month And Was Wondering If Anyone Can Help Me Out With A Place To Go And Pick Up Some Freestyle Cd's? Even Ones Like Made By Local Djs If Possible? Any Help Would Be Appreciated! Thx

Ace, check out Lewis Martinee.com He's got some great stuff that he has produced over the years on sale there!

Carjul records was the best one stop freestyle place in Miami but sadly it closed about weeks ago. I stopped by on it's last day. That's what pirating freestyle does to the industry.

That is very sad to hear.
That store was one of my all time best freestyle destinations.
I bought many great records there. Allmost all of my very rare pieces
I have bought from Carjul back in the day.
Carjul was a huge part of my freestyle life and that little -big- store will
be remembered forever!

i bought a few freestyle 12s at carjul on its last week of closing its sad that it had to close.. the guy there told me that the owner of the place had passed away R.I.P..

alot of it has to do with pirating the music but its all about the music being heard on "CDS" the format was changed most people dont even know what a turntable or a record is.

and to anyone that lived in miami knows that area of Coral Gables has a tendecy for all its business to shut down for example.. like "Miracle Center"it shut down then it was later renamed "Paseos" that didnt work so it shut down completly now the only thing that still is in business there is some Fitness Joint i forgot the name of it. so that might be one of the reasons carjul didnt make any customers.

aight ima post this up right quick cause im just rambling.

Carjul will forever be remembered by anyone with a passion for Freestyle in Miami. The store was a rare gem, and one of the few independent retailers that was able to stave off the F.Y.E.s, Specs, Peaches, and the many other competitors over the years. Their secret was definitely catering to the niche markets of local DJs as well as anyone who loved their 12" vinyl, even in the 90s and 00s (like myself!).

Carlos Estrada was the owner who passed away in late December 1999 but the store hung on 'till last summer. The store name consisted of the combo of his first and middle names, Carlos Julio! The guy was a genius for the music retailing business and you couldn't stump him on an song/artist question if your life depended on it. Always willing to go the extra mile to get something obscure if you needed it too.

RIP Carlos and Carjul Records!

Danny, no kidding on the closing down of businesses in the area, LOL. I worked at the Miracle Center General Cinema movie theater from '89-'92 when that mall was the place to be! Funny enough, I think its presence did help out Carjul's business, I remember many people making the trek across the way to get their hard-to-find dance singles, etc. Also, I recall the Spec's in Miracle Center tried to compete w/ them in a way by having their own "12 dance/rap section but you couldn't touch the selection and knowledge Carlos and his crew offered across the street.

Amen my friend, from its infancy on the 2nd floor of the "Sir Speedy" complex in '78 to its eventual much more expansive spot where the convenience store once had been.
