Most of the Chicano artists are from the south-west...singers from Texas generally are all Chicanos
ex. Jaime (heart&soul) George Patino, Marcos B...yes we do have talent also and we need to blowup in the biz

I don't know about Chicanos... but as far as Mexicans are concerned, all of the Freestyle artists from San Diego are Mexican...Felix, Frankie Boy, Leticia, and Tury Q...i know Tury Q is originally from Texas, but he was residing in San Diego when he released his 12" "Why Can't I have her" Also, i think Timmy T (who's from Fresno) is Mexican.

A Matter of Preference

I don't care for the term Chicano/a, for, after all, where is this magical land where Chicanos originated? Chicanolandia?! *LMAO* Anyway, it's just a matter of preference whether or not some people of Mexican ancestry call themselves Mexican, Mexican American, Mexican-American, or Chicano/a. It's the same way with the whole Hispanic versus Latino/a issue, which, on a different note, relies strongly on geography, or what part of the U.S. you're from, per se.

P.S. I'm with Arturo on this one: I like to call myself Mexican, plain and simple.

oh hey, i'm aware that chicano is kinda like a political term, thanks for all the replies btw.
i read that chicano actually comes from me-xicano...well, that's what some ppl claim. anyway, yeah, Mexican, that's easier, everybody knows what yre talkin bout, but, hey, my name ain't easy, and i go the hard way out, to quote eazy e (RIP), kinda.

oh yeah, are you referring to Aztlán? the mythical Chicano homeland? i read an article about it, it sed that Aztlán was actually a GRINGO INVENTION! funny how thingz change...
peace, el gringo loko, ndmattopazzo

Thanks for the input.

ndmattopazzo,

I read your two last posts and they were very interesting. Keep posting because we can all learn from each other. I mean, even though we may have many similarities as people of color, each of us also has his/her own spin on things.

Hey Peeps

I'm Mexi-rican, but carrie the word Latin all over. Just to briefly let you know Chicanos are from Chicago, Tejanos from Texas, and Ese/a or vatos they are LA term. But in reality we are all Mexican in general. I'm proud of my heritage. My father is from Axutla Puebla, Mexico. So keep it strong and hope to see more mexicans doing freestyle.
Peace and Luv

huh? well, anyway. i guess no one has called me coloured before, but that's fine with me.... you know, when the Anglos wanted more settlers in the south west, they came up with this aztlán thing, so ppl felt like it was worth it to settle there.
now of course aztlán means something else... it's now a concept used by mexican americans (not all of em of c.) and in a way it probably could be called empowering...

Chicano something to do with Chicago? never heard of that... I'd rather say that some Mexican Americans from the
south west call themselves that, but probably also others.

peace!

P.S.
next term, I'm gonna write a paper on Chicano ethnicity in rap music... !

It just means...

The phrase "people of color" just means that you are not "white" or of (Northern) European ancestry.

Ok first off, i doubt very much that 'Chicanos' refers to people from Chicago, although i wouldn't mind if that became official, so that Mexicans in the Southwest would cease to be tagged with that term...

I know that the word 'Chicano' was originally used by White people (Euro-Americans) in an attempt to insult Latinos...since the original word of the word 'Chicano' is 'dog'...later on, however many people of Mexican decent adopted the term...

I was once told by a college professor, that the term Chicanos, was used specifically for people (Mexicans) who ended up on this side (USA) of the border, immediately following the Mexican/American War of 1848, since the United States stole more than half of the land of what was then Mexico, including (California, Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and part of Oklahoma) many Mexicans ended up on this side of the border, and immediately became 'American citizens' since this land was now part of the United States. However since they were not very well accepted by White people, the term 'Chicano' was used to refer to them/insult them...In other words 'Chicanos' are people who's families have been in the USA since 1848, and not the descendants of Mexican people who emigrate to the United States.

Now as far as Aztlán being an invention of the Anglos, i honestly dismiss that possibility...i had however kept an open mind about it being an invention, and i feel that if anything, it was an invention of the Mexican Government, in an attempt to make it's (Mexico's) story somewhat more interesting, and gain acceptance of indigenous peoples...afterall, the Mexican flag shows the eagle on the cactus, with the serpent in its mouth, the sign that the Aztecs supposedly saw when they came from Aztlán...so if signs of Aztlán are on the Mexican flag, it can only mean that the either, the legend is true...or Mexico came up with the invention before the Anglos...

Is This Mexican History 101 o que?

Some of you guys are spending way too much time watching "Mi Vida Loca", "Blood In, Blood Out", and reading too many 'Lowrider' mags. LOL. Here's a thought! If you really want to know the truth about your ancestry. Do some real research! Take a History class! Go see where you come from, don't take someone's word for it. STOP BEING LAZZZZZY A'''''s!!! (lmao)
Hey don't get me wrong I'm proud to be of Mexican descent! "I'm Brown and I'm Down", I'm a "Hispanic Causing Panic", Yo soy "Latino Por Destino", and all that!!! But, -there's always a "but"- what does all that mean? When you're 6 feet underground? Nothing!!! I don't think I'm going to "Aztlan" when I die! LOL. In the beginning and 'til the end there will always be one true race. The Human Race!
I know, I know you're all thinking I'm a nut? But, - there's always a "but"...oops I already said that. Maybe I am a nut. LOL. Anyway, if any of you are Mexican-American, try telling a full blooded Mexican you are Mexican, or a white American that you're American. See what they tell you 'pochito'. LOL. Didn't any of you watch "Selena"? Abraham Quintanilla said it best "You gotta be more Mexican the the Mexicans, and more American than the Americans, it's exhausting". And, it's the same way with other peoples of Spanish speaking ancestry, from my understanding. So what's the point. That, whatever you are or consider yourself to be; you have to enjoy it, make the most of it, and most importantly respect others of different ethnicities as you would have them to respect you!
Getting back to the main question though. I think that there are quite a few female freestyle artists of Mexican descent. I won't classify them as Chican@'s, because I understand the term to refer to Mexican immigrants in a derrogatory manner. I believed it was used to refer to Mexican-Americans at one time, too. Until I learned from Mexicans in Mejico that it meant "hog". It was used to refer to illegals crossing the border through the rivers and mud, and getting filthy and dirty, like pigs in a pigpen.
Arturo so "Chicanos are from Chicago"? LMAO!!! Did you know that Chicago means the stinky place in Native American Indian? But peoples from Chicago call themselves Chicagoans not "Chicanoans", maybe we spelled it wrong. LMAO! So there you have it your History lesson for today. LOL.
No matter what keep the Freestyle alive!!! or as some of you may prefer the Latin Freestyle alive!!! Peace and Much Love to the Human Race!!! ADOIS!!!
