Chicago Freestyle Radio Recap: December 14th, December 21st, 2001.

First of all, let me apologize for allowing so much time to pass between my program updates. The holiday season is usually very hectic for me and my full-time job as an Educational Program Director at the Union League Boys and Girls Club here in Chicago, and I am just now starting to catch my breath.

Secondly, I want to express my appreciation to all of my radio and cyber listeners. The past month has seen the show take tremendous strides as posts have been made not only on ClubFreestyle.com, but on other websites as well. More than a few of us are now “juggling” websites in order to preach the Freestyle gospel. Of course, the original home to my cyber-listeners has always been ClubFreestyle.com and I appreciate the efforts of Jack G. which have resulted in my status as a respected writer here at “CF”.

Now, as Kasey would say, on with the show…

December 14th’s show was dominated by requests made through Clubfreestyle.com and another Freestyle website-as well as those “secret e-mails” sent to me at my Hotmail address. This show was made rather easy because of the outstanding participation of cyber-listeners and callers to 312.591-8870. Thanks to Bassy, Mario5starr, keh, Paresh and chaos. In addition, Mo (in the Netherlands) and Ashley in Conneticutt in my Hotmail and Armando. Phone calls came in from Tim, Josie, Dorca, Alma and Rich. The playlist went like this…

6am: Tony “Boom Boom” Badea’s mix, followed by Marvin Gayes “National Anthem” (which of course I’ll continue to play until Osama goes down)…Artists Against Aids…”What’s Going On”…Sammy C…”Little Drummer Boy”, Sammy C…”Faded Destiny” (by request for Bassy).

7am: Chrissie I-eece…”Love Desire”, TKA…”In and Out”, George Lamond…”Where Does That Leave Love” (by request), Tony Moran…”Lover” (by request), Bethaney…”End of the Game” (by request for caller Tim), 2onnarize…”One More Time”, Joei Mae…”Promise Me Your Heart” (by request for Erica, who patiently waited three weeks for me to record it on a CD for airplay), Johnny O…”Fantasy Girl” (for new listener Josie, who has returned to Chicago after 14 years on Florida). Dorca-a new listener in Chicago’s Logan Square wanted to hear “Diamond Girl” by Nice and Wild which led me to a story about Nice and Wild singer John Minnis being a $100,000 winner on Star Search years ago (it’s true, it’s true). I then played “Stop The Love” by Stevie B (for Mo in Europe…woo-hoo)…then came Soave…”Crying Over You” (for Armando), Corina…”Summertime” (for Alma), which led into the week’s “Word and Music” interview segment at 8am featuring Cynthia and her songs “Like A Star”, “Change On Me”, “Thinking About You”, and “Save Your Love”. After the interview, I played Coro…”Fallen Angel”, Mario “Nobody’s Fool” (as requested by Ashley), Style…”I Won’t Believe In Love” (an unreleased classic, as is Mario’s cut). Nayobe’s “Please Don’t Go” was played for Rich and the show ended with Willie Valentin’s “How I Love Thee” for Ashley, the artist who doesn’t request her own music, so I’ll play it anyway.
On Friday, December 21st, “Wake Up Dancing” returned with participating listeners Keh, Paresh, Mo, Grafpix, Ashley the artist, Mario5starr, Tony G of Nu-Image, Tim Schommer, Maribell the artist, Alex Zuniga of Latin Nation, new listener Jay, phoner Rich, phoner Tim and Mario. Forgive me if I left anyone out, this article is being written while I’m at my “real life” job (those darn kids and their problems)…Here was my playlist: 6am, yet another Freestyle mix from Chicago’s Tony “Boom Boom” Badea, Marvin Gaye’s “National Anthem”, Destiny’s Child with “Emotions” as remixed by Chicago’s Maurice Joshua, Robin Thompsom’s “Over and Over” produced by Chicago’s Charlie Babie (by way of New York), Mario Diaz and Mr. Lee…”Can You Feel It” (on Hot Mix Five Records), De La Mor…”Hard To Let Go” ended the hour.

7am: My theme (what a toe tapper), George Lamond…”Without You” (requested by Mario the artist), Maribell…”Don’t Make Me Promises” (she’ll be interviewed soon-she e-mailed me a picture and…WOW), Cynthia…”Endless Night” (for Grafpix), Tina B…”Honey To A Bee” (for Mo), Ashley…”Quit All Those Games” (for Bassy), Safire…”Eyes of a Stranger” (another request), Tony Moran…”On The Edge” (for Paradise), Elissa…”Back To Me” (for Paresh, who wanted me to play one of my 2001 favorites), Erika then called and asked me to dedicate a song to her close friend Veronica, who is recovering from a recent car accident (I played George Lamond’s “It’s Always You”).

8 O’Clock rolled around and I decided to bump the “Words and Music” interview segment with Danny Bonaduce (yes of the Partridge Family). I bumped the interview to make room for all of the day’s requests-including…
George Lamond, Brenda K. Starr and the Latin All-Stars…”Feliz Navidad” (for keh), Lil Suzy…”He’s All I Want For Christmas”, Mario…”Nobody’s Fool” (for Bassy), Nayobe…”Please Don’t Go” (for caller Rich), the original In-Effect (and it’s behind the scene story for Mario) “Forever Amour”, Noel…”Will I Find True Love” (for keh and Bassy), Savour…”Don’t Take Your Love Away” (for caller Tim), Nu-Image…”Sounds of Love” and Johnny O…”Highways of Love”.

I ended the show by asking listeners to nominate their favorite Freestyle songs for 2001. I will compile a list and then play the best of on the “Wake Up Dancing” show dated Friday, January 4th from 6am to 9am on Chicago’s WLUW (88.7 FM) with the web hook-up on www.wluw.org . If you have trouble receiving the webcast, try downloading the free winamp program.

Thank you all for a great 2001. ClubFreestyle.com played a major role in taking my radio program to a whole new level. I appreciate all of the support that I have received throughout the year from Artists, Producers and the fans!

Have a great holiday season.
