I REMEMBER A FEW YEARS AGO WHEN "IN A DREAM" BY ROCKELL WAS ROTATED HEAVILY. POWER 96 HAD A CONCERT AND SHE PERFORMED HER HIT WITH A FEW OTHERS. I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO CHAT WITH HER AND DISCUSS THE ISSUE OF FREESTYLE. HER ATTITUDE AND RESPONSE AFTER COMPLIMENTING HER ON KEEPING FREESTYLE ALIVE WAS VERY DISTURBING AND UPSETTING TO HEAR. BEFORE MEETING HER AND SEEING HER PERFORM, I WAS PUSHING, PLAYING AND PROMOTING HER SONG EVERYWHERE I WENT B/C HER FIRST TWO HITS WERE HOT. AFTERWARDS, I TOLD HER ALL THIS AND SHE RESPONDED "I DONT CONSIDER MYSELF A FREESTYLE ARTIST AND NEVER WILL, I AM A CROSSOVER DANCE ARTIST AND SO IS MY MUSIC." I'M NOT A HATER B/C I STILL LISTEN TO HER MUSIC. BUT, I HATE SEEING PEOPLE POST ABOUT ROCKELL BEING THE "FREESTYLE ARTIST" OF TODAY AND OF THE FUTURE.
IF YOU'RE PUSHING NEW FREESTYLE PROJECTS LIKE WILLIE VALENTIN AND KENNY FREESTYLE IN THE WEST COAST, KEEP IT GROWING AND MUCH SUCCESS TO YOU.
FREESTYLE will die out if WE do not allow it to progress. That means you "Its not freestyle" people. We all love the Old School flavor however its over 15 years old.
Evertime a new style comes in we change the name and say its not freestyle cause its a little different. If you open your mind you will see all these Progressive Freestyle Songs played on the Rythm CHR stations are being played much like the Old school Freestyle in 1987.
In house music there's House, deep House, Progressive House, latin house, but No mater what its still house.
In Rock theres Modern Rock, Pop/rock, Progressive Rock, atlenative Rock, Heavy Metal Rock, but still ROCK
In freestyle instead of doing this: Old school Freestyle, New School freestyle, Progressive freestyle, etc..
we do this: freestyle, new school, trip hop, latin hiphop, breakbeat, electro funk, dance, club, electronica, breakbeat, breakdance, trance, its not freestyle, its sorta freestyle, not really freestyle, east coast, west coast, blablabla. = division not progression
Also we tend to stick with ONLY or MOSTLY the artist of the old school era. I know and You know that there are a LOT of songs out now that the SAME "Its not Freestyle" people would be calling freestyle IF it wasent a Brand new artist.
Theres nothing wrong with prefering a particular style. but when you dismiss all the styles, Canadian, new school or Progressive you make the whole genre Smaller and nostalgic aka old.
As for the Singers. A LOT of artist do not want to be labeled in one particualar category whether they like it or not. Most artist want to be on the top of the POP charts with different types of music.
Issue 21 of FREEdom of STYLE will breakdown all the styles OLD and NEW, CLASSIC to MODERN including the Copycat Cousins in a an article Titled "TOTAL CONFUSION"
PS: gigi d'agastina will be in the single reviews, so will Plumet "Damaged"
There will be a special Artist Greatest hits (not compilations) in the album reviews.
