i remeber 91-92 goin to limelight in the city around 1am..when i heard cypress hill "how i could just kill a man" on "ktu" and was like wahhhhhh??

The day I knew HOT 97 was going to HELL was the day I heard "POP GOES THE WEASEL" by 3RD BASS. The rest is history.

when did the station OFFICIALLY Cross over??
and when 103.5 went from country to dance, one of the FIRST songs i heard on their was ITS ELECTRIC BOOGIE WOOGIE WOOGIE!!

I remember that day. I was working at the Massapequa Mall as security and I ran to every single store in the mall and before you knew it, everyone was blasting KTU!

I also told another friend and he was actually pissed that KTU took away his country station!

whoa Kenny....... u pulled this 'ol thread right outta your........ 🙂
I remember what must've been the first "new KTU" broadcast day in early '96..... I seem to remember hearing songs like "Set U Free" , "Dreamer" & "Do You Miss Me?"......

Sietz

..Yup I have the tapes too....I had one recording 103.5 and the other recording 97.1! I think it was "Fast Freddie Colon" who was on at the time too...
Another quick piece of DJ trivia...what was the last song that Fast Freddie used to play before he left every night ?...it always preceeded his trade mark saying "ban the bomb, kiss your mom,be the best, god loves ya man"......

...I forgot all about broadway bill lee! The only ones that stood out in my memory were fast freddie and tim bird "the bird man". I also hadnt realized that braodway bill lee was back in action at KTU,mainly beause I havent had my preset set to KTU since early 91,when they changed over to rap.Last week I just guessed that KTU might be doing some kind of special programming, since it was also approaching its 18th anniversary.
Thanks Mike for correct/updated info!

I liked "Hot or Not" LOL.. i useto always call & vote :lol

i used to love the remixes they did hot 103. they were called 'hotmixes', the best ones were done by the latin rascals and lil loie vega. my favorite one was the silent morning mix, with the mandolay sample in it.

The HOT 97 Format Switch

This thread was originally about "Hot 103" (New York) switching to "Hot 97" in 1988. Of course, that wasn't so bad because they were basically staying as the exact same station, with the same format, but just moving from 103.5 FM on the dial to 97.1 FM.

However, what really depressed me was when Hot 97 changed it format in early 1994, and became a completely different radio station that was simply using the same name. They changed from being a dance, freestyle, and pop music station, to an all Hip Hop and R&B station. Their old slogan, "New York's Hot Mix", was changed to the new slogan "Where Hip Hop Lives". The entire on-air DJ staff was changed, and all the special weekend shows were changed as well. It was a real "kick in the stomach" for my friends and I, who were all big Hot 97 listeners. I couldn't believe that I went to sleep listening to "Silent Morning" by NOEL, and woke up hearing some rap song that I'd never heard of, followed by an announcer screaming "This is Hot 97 Where Hip Hop Lives".

I admit that I do have an interest in Hip Hop and R&B music, and I did continue to listen to the station periodically, but New York radio was never the same again! It was very upsetting for everyone who loved freestyle music and good dance records! Over 10 years later, HOT 97 is still all hip hop and R&B.

Funny thing was, I really liked Hot 103/Hot 97 up until they went all Hip Hop.. In early 92, I was in NY and made some recordings of Hot 97 at the time (Jeff Thomas mainly) and they had the perfect blend of Freestyle, Dance, R & B and Hip hop.. Heres an example, I have an hour recorded that included:
C & C -Pride (A Deeper Love)
Laura Enea -This Is The Last Time
Gypsymen -Hear The Music (Still one of my Fav's)
Jody Watley -I'm The One You Need
Voyce -Within My Heart
Soul II Soul -Joy
Black Sheep -The Choice is Yours
Mint Condition -Breaking My Heart
Shamen -Make It Mine

BTW: Fast Freddie signed off with Holy Freehollies!

That is the same sort of blend I have been trying to get with my station, and its a beautiful thing...OK heres some Hot 97/Hot 103 links:
