For all of those that complain that KTU doesn't play newer freestyle music..and that they only play the same ol played out freestyle songs....and that Beatstock will only have the same ol artists.....here ya go.....

The ratings recently came out ...and here is the outcome of the Sunday night freestyle show......

From 9:00-11:00 the standard classics are played...(Spring love, No reason to cry, etc.) From 11-midnight, I come on and mix NEW freestyle, and lesser known older freestyle. The ratings for 9-11 are higher than ever before. The 11-midnight ratings drop off 60% compared to 9-11. That is a HUGE drop off.

I immediately thought it was me and my mixing. But they assured me that all my other mixshows (monday and friday lunchtime, and Saturday night 9-11 when i play the CLASSICS) the ratings are higher than ever.

So maybe now some of you will understand why KTU only plays the familiar classics. Because it works. Lesser known freestyle doesn't get ratings. And radio is all about ratings. 🙁
 
Hey Johnny! Thanks for explaining it to us. It just makes me sad because new freestyle deserves a chance and us hard-core freestyle fans want to hear stuff form new artists, as well as new freestyle from our fave singers. I love the old school stuff and I never get tired of hearing it. But I do thank you for getting the new stuff on anyway!! I definitely appreciate it!!! 🙂

Yea me too. I never get tired of hearing the old school, they're my favorite. But I want to hear new artists as well. Change is good. loll. Too bad all those people shut off their radios at 11pm... they don't know what they're missing. 🙄
 
my 2 cents...

maybe it's not the music all the times... but at 11pm on a sunday is pretty rough to listen to the radio... people are usually either asleep or watching to tv to go to sleep... remember alot of people either go to work or school on monday. yes the new school freestyle plays a part in the ratings. but u also have to account for the time that the new freestyle is being played on...

i live in miami so i've never heard one of ur mixes and most of the time on sunday's i'm never online at 11 to listen to ur new school mix online...

just putting my 2 cents....

that very true freestyle freak. at 11:00 pm alot of people just go to sleep. i know alot of people that just turn it off before 11. i dont think its the music.
 
Even though I have to get up at 6 a.m. on Monday, I push myself to stay up until the show is over. Talk about devotion!

When KTU came out in 96' I was just recording "Nunca/Never" and I remenber clearly that it was music only being play no commercial at all. And Latif had told me that the cd will push at the station, to then know that they will never play it cause they will only play oldschool stuff, and try new dance and nothing new for the freestyle scene. But I knew it will be hard for freestyle to get push now in NY, and Hiphop has taken over. 97.9 La Mega and Caliente 105.9 (Now Latino Mix) where the only ones to pump up Freestyle at their lunch mix and fridaynight mix.
Now after awhile they have Freestyle play alot in KTU, but never like it will ever be from the past.

Willie is also right, I am for one that have to be in bed early and if I don't have a show I will defenitly be in bed early. I wake up 430am to shower and get ready to be at work at 530am.
And there are many like me, I'm greatful tha atleast some is playing and Oldschool is always welcome, but we will have to work hard to have someone look and notice us......

That sucks Johnny, but don't stop spinning the new school. To be honest the only reason I hit the KTU chats/live feed on Sunday is for the new school, I like old school, but I love new school...
 
umm how many people does KTU think listen to the radio at 11:00pm? Come on now, I have never EVER listened to any music Radio Station after 11:00 on a freaking Sunday Night. It is time to relax and fall asleep to the boob tube
 
11:00 on a friday or saturday night would be better. But Sunday, I'm sleeping, I have a long week to face so I need my sleep or you don't want to know me, because without my sleep I'm a real b***h.

So it's not the music, it's the time.

I've been mixing sundays on Judy's show for 3 years....i only started playing newer stuff the past year and a half. How come the ratings were great the first 2 years...before i started playing newer freestyle ?????????
 
Cause some people aren't open to new things, that's the problem Johnny, a lot of people don't want to give new school a chance. Not much you can do about it, maybe you should spin in more new school "friendly" cities. 😀
 
Well, when I worked at Power 105.5 in Sacramento, I did many shifts where I was working the hours of between 6pm and midnight or so. And I can tell you that I had a sharp drop-off in phone calls/requests at 11pm. I don't know how things are in New York, but I would say that could be a reason. Another thing I would mention would be that the classics get listened to more because people know them already , they can start singing along to it when they hear it, they recognize it, they know the songs already and keep listening. However, when new freestyle comes out people don't know it yet, it takes time for them to recognize it. I know that a lot of radio stations will get a little more risky in the mixshows and use them to test new music that they won't put into regular rotation right away. However, I don't think this is always very effective. Mixshows often have just a portion of the entire song, for example a 4minute song might only have 1 1/2 minutes of the song in the mix. Also the mixes move so fast that there is often no time or very little to mention the name and artist of a song occasionally. So people don't get familiar with these songs that well. When we started playing "Sandstorm" by Darude, we first had it in the mixshows. We had it in the mix shows FOR MONTHS and had very few requests for it ever. Then one day we just put it into rotation because we had a feeling it would do well, and we mentioned the name of the song, and soon it became one of our most requested songs. We also took an old song "No one knows" by Susan Santiago and played it a little in rotation, soon that became our most reuested song for a while. People were calling in asking where they could get it and they all thought it was a new song. By the way Johnny, has that song been played on KTU? Anyway, let me know what you all think. I'll write another post later on why freestyle gets little play on radio and attention by big labels, and I'll come back to the Susan Santiago thing.

Johnny, just to let you know, i was up for your mix at 11pm this past sunday!!! and everyone knows how rare it is to have me up past 10 on a sunday!!
 
My 2 cents!

One of the previous posts stated that die hard fans would stay up for the 11-12 segment of the mix show.

I consider myself a die hard fan. Someone else here also said I was die hard (no need to mention names, they know who they are) but I can't stay up to midnight when I have to work the next day. If I have the Monday off, I'm there all night, but my day job is customer service, where I'm responsible for upwards of $325,000.00 a day in physical cash, as well as handling many company's and personal accounts. I've seen too many stupid mistakes made due to lack of sleep, and I'm not putting myself there!

Also, when I don't get a good 8 hours, I can be a real bitch. Nobody wants that! 🙄

Johnny, if it's up to you, I hope you keep new school on. I enjoy hearing it, (I usually stay on till 11:30)
 
i think its a little of both...its too late...plus its all new...i think maybe u should concentrate on say 3 or 4 new songs and always play them every week...then maybe people will take a liking...once people hear a song a couple of times they usually like it....i know personally by the time i remember to turn it on its over...or i am out or soemthing...its just a bad slot...11 oclock on sunday...now play it 9 oclock on a tuesday or something and u will have listeners

sunday i had ktu on all day...up untill like 6 or 7...let me tell u...i only heard one cynthia song...and i heard there is a stranger in my house 4 times in like 3 hours...i thought they were suppoose to play a freestyle song every hour...if they did, i missed it...
 
to tell u the truth the morning show i listen to is hot 97...they say it like it is...the songs are always diffrent...its the poppy rap stuff...and its funny as all hell...ktus show is getting weak...same crap blah blah blah blah....oh well...gimmicks like the joke off and stuff like that...they need to get new things going...i do like the fact of having ralphie morino...he was a fav of mine from hot 97 back in the day when they were making thier transfer...i remember his last show on there...i was young as hell and use to listen with a speaker hooked up to like a 7 dollar walk man, LMAO...he didnt even let us know except for something liek well this is my last day in the city...then i never heard from him again till ktu.

another old hot 97 dj i liked was paco...remember when he did the 4 oclock count down and he would scream pacoooooooooooooooooooooooooooo for like 2 mintues...man those were the days...i remember requesting k7 cause he use to be in tka...awwwwww...look ty back when i was a k7 fan...but now i hear paco is on la mega or something...oh well...just good memories...radio was the bomb back then...i use to love it..now i get fed up with it
 
i skip around in the morning between 97, 103 and 107. z100 is too annoying for me. i hate all their voices. i mainly leave it on 97 though, cuz they're mad funny! especially buckwild with his off the wall comments. oh and my fav morning show was hot 97 when ed and dre were there. remember.. "i'm naked... under my clothes!!" lmaoooo!!!!! 😛

ok... back to ktu... anyone? more comments??
 
for real hot 97 is always pulling something on some natonality..it is funny as hell...but yeah back to ktu lol 🙄
