lol,
hey anthony, hows u doin?
First i have to give props to kenny for taking me back....lol burnouts and rockers,lol.mopheads.
they always used to raise their cars and made thier engines louder.
we always used to lower ours and make the music louder.
rock vs disco...that war is still going on.
but they failed when they attempted to burn all those disco records in that bomb fire at the baseball game.
we are still here.
ok, back to the subject. why do things seem to break into subgenres.
its all in the marketing. everytime something new flourishes, the industry wants to hold it and needs to repackage something "new" to the audience.
people always want whats on the cutting adge.
it always has hapened.
hiphop for example has had its genres though out its years electrofunk, miami electrobass , miami booty bass, ny hiphop (east coast, wets caost. all diferent flavors from diferent regions.....but still remained one unified hiphop community and scene.
in freestyle we had so many diferent styles of freestyle though out its history. so many sides to it, but it was always freestyle.
since the mid 90's alot has happend for freestyle..but its the name that people keep changing everytime a new sound comes to play.
they used to call in the mid 90's trip hop and west coast to define the new sound that california was sporting. Angelina, lina santiago, dj juanito, jocelyne enriquez and all the noize from sanfransisco.
(by the way, if it wasnt for the west coast..rockells "in A dream" wouldnt be here today. if it wasnt for Miami popularising those miami horns, they wouldnt be found in "in A dream" from jossete to begin with).
but let alone, everyone overlooked that many of those people behind productions from the west caost were miami influenced or had strong past ties to miami. add to this that miami always had a strong break scene and lil before that (early 90's)
people like george alvarado, george acosta, and many others were strong in the breaks and trance undergound here in miami.
we had awsome records flooding the market like planet soul, nadine renee, dj boom, tores brothers, mona q etc....
nobody called it "south coast".
instead they called it trance and breaks for marketing porposes.
street beat records was the only label at that moment who was smart and really recognized that what was going on was freestyle. and jumped on that as well. the new electrofunk and freestyle.
"we did it like that, and now we do it like this...its the new style!'
its all in the marketing. its all in the people who are out there.
freestyle is really devided now by mentality.
those who worship old school and those who worship the sound and into the evolution of whats hapening now.
there are people making new records, but making them sound like old records holding the same sound from years ago..and then there are people making records now sounding like whats in style today, but sounding abstract and "weird" to those who are used to the norm.
one crowd would wear dressy clothes, todays crowd would wear tounge rings and cary glowsticks.
its still one freestyle, but 2 whole worlds apart. so when it comes to segragating, you kinda have to market things diferent to apeal diferent crowds.
thats just the way the industry is.
i think people should just leave freestyle as freestyle. recognize its subgenres, but recognize it as one entity.one genre.
but its not only marketing to diferent style, but diferent generations as well.
a 18 or 19 year old today ( regular 19 year old, not obsessed with clubfreestyle.com and freestylemusic) isnt going to be as excited to see a johnny o show, aposed to a planet soul or mona q show.
everytime a station throws a freestyle jam, they only stick to artist that were around the 89-93 period. not really to those who were before or after.
other scenes dont do that as much. they dont segregate themselves so much.rock and hiphop both love their past as their own present.freestyle is the only scene that has a dificult time doing that.
once agin, it is based on the marketing.
its the sons and doughters of those who breakdanced back in the day ,who are breaking to todays freestyle/break records and chanting to those records their parents chanted to..
same as its the sons of those who were punk rockers in the late 70s early 80's that are going to goth clubs today and still hearing some records their uncles and mothers litened to.
roots of alternative rock and ska are found back in the punk rock and alternative scene (ska roots you also have to look into jamaica music).
roots of breaks is found in the classic freestyle and electrofunk /hihop scene in the early 80's.
the music today is all 80's influenced..now the industry wants to go totaly retro 80's in fashion and so many other aspects.
but in the breaks scene, things will need to change to stay alive..so you will eventually start hearing more freestyle break remixes inn the months to come and then a large new latin boom, as the latin influence in 80's freestyle and music was as strong then as it is now, and will finally be recognized..
i wonder what they will call it "salsa breaks"????
But there are alot of production companies now, slapping break records together, finding a latina to sing over them in both english and spanglish and hoping to catch the next latin boom. cuz latin house was so yesturday. and breaks and progressive house is what is hot now in the undergound and will start rising more towrds the meainstream. the latin thing hasnt died down either, especailly with that stupid ketchup song.
its rapers delite with a spanish accent!
so you will see people just adding latin artist, with 80's influenced dance tracks, lots of breakdancing and lots of attitude.
you will see it coming out of diferent sources and diferent scenes. it wont be considered freestyle at first, but eventually it will. (just like angelina, and everyone else). it wont come from the freestyle scene or a freestyle record company.
history kind of repeats itself. thats what the industry is doing now. and they are doing it behind "the industries" back.
companies are not going to tell other competitive companies what they are doing. they only care about themselves.
see. i would leak, cuz i care about the whole scene. its one big happy family.
but yeah, its all in the marketing of new sounds. all to sell records and make the record companies lots of maney and make the artist fustrated.
that is why things are segregated into subgenres.
well, nice talking to you guys
