Just my opinion !!!
This is a lesson i think the freestyle industry should take .. Look at the hip hop world, EVERYONE is collaborating with everyone, Examples (nate dog, master p and snoop) , (missy elliot, jarule, and company) ... (janet jackson, outkast) ... (run dmc/jagged edge/jermaine dupree) ...

The freestyle industry needs to collaborate in a strong kind of way for any hopes of a major come back ..

true that Rands....

Sorry to say it meng, but uh, i like freestyle and all, but hiphop beats and the flows with & the collaborations make it popular. dont get me wrong peeps, i do my ones and twos thing as a hobbie and i buy a variety of music, which is what people wanna hear at parties. (EX: partie breaks Fatman Scoop)People jus' wanna hear about other things and different beatssss. again, i'll always have my freestyle! peaceouttie...

Hey Kenny,

I think you've made a strong point there!
However i personally think that even if they didnt
collaborate the way that they have, that it would still be
as popular.
I feel that it has alot to do with the fact that in that
genre mostly all artists are able to individualize
themselves from one another..(unlike freestyle where
everyone is singing about the same old overly used subject
of Heartbreak) thus giving their audience much more of a
diverse selection. They seem to be able to
do this with themselves as individual artists and with
the music that each of them put out as well(whether it be
a solo act, group, or plain rapper)same goes for R&B. So I
think its more of creativity, artist development thing then
anything else. Saddly to say, if we're gonna collaborate
as freestyle artists, writers, producers to just do the same
old thing again, you can forget it..it'll just be a waste
of time....we need new recipes here before we hit the
table!!!

But yes!!! Youve made a hell of a point there!!!

peace out!!!!!

FreestyleFreak has a point. There's no sense in trying to make freestyle sound all fast and cheezy like euro, especially since there's already a lot shit out there for that purpose. If the producers had stuck to the same old winning formula instead of trying to make it sound all different, freestyle wouldn't have fallen off this far. Sure, it may not have been on the radio but it would have retained a bigger percentage of its core audience. That's why hip hop is so successful. Even the non-radio artists sell more than any freestyle act could dream of selling nowadays. It's because there are mad rap groups out there that don't give a shit about radio and just do their thing (like Beatnuts, Mobb Deep, Cormega, Heltah Skeltah, OGC, and the list goes on and on). This attitude gives the music edge and thus makes it more appealing to real headz that are into real music. These freestyle producers need to stop trying to be pop before building a strong underground foundation. A strong foundation is what a genre of music needs to be successful. Once you have that, radio will notice you.

Music, no matter the type goes in a cycle just like clothes, style, etc...

If you keep Freestyle in your heart & don't care what anybody else thinks than it will always be STRONG!

Weep! Weep! Pass the tissues pleeeeeeezzzzzzzzz.....

i have one word: R&B.
R&B already is danceable, it has melodies and stuff,
and in some cases it's even more modern* than most freestyle.
if there would be no R&B, freestyle would probably be more
succesful, coz ppl wanna listen to melodic danceable music.
course, some freestyle also sounds kinda like the eighties -
i like that, but some ppl don't...

* Kelis and especially Missy Elliott. both very good, too.

Just Keep It Alive ----- Just bump freestyle when cruzin down your street --- people will listen to it and 99.999% of the time will nodd their heads to the bass bump--

-------------- KEEP FREESTYLE ALIVE ---------------

I Like Both!!

I like more old school sounding Rap, I prefer lyrics that aren't real offensive. I think Rap and R&B, and TOP 40 just has more radio airplay, financial backing, etc. We used to discuss this on the old board. Someone needs to put MONEY & BACKING behind the freestyle artists!! If you invest TIME & MONEY then you usually have a successful product, but freestyle HAS a marketable product/sound.

I prefer that they keep some part of their sound classic and spin off some variations but not so that it's not recognizable as what made freestyle successful in the first place. To me, and it's just my opinion, when the freestyle artists put out tracks that sound "house or techno" then the song is house, techno, or whatever, and not freestyle anymore (at least to me).

When I go to buy music I get confused because very few stores still have a section labeled "freestyle", and even when they do there's usually other stuff mixed in. If I WANT to buy house/techno, etc. then I'd look for a CD in that section labeled that type of music(or at least give me a clue on the CD). I don't want or like to be suprised when I buy a "freestyle" CD (especially from an old school freestyle artist). I want to know by looking at it if it has a classic sound, or is it house?techno. Everyone knows that once you open a CD the stores WILL NOT take it back if the music doesn't sound like what you thought it was gonna sound like, and CD's are mad expensive now!!

Well, this is all just MY OPINION!!

definitely, it also has something to do with the money.
record companies probably feel that freestyle is a music
for minorities and that's why they aren't putting much money in it. that's definitely sumthin to do with it.

Freestyle isn't as popular because racism against Latino music and culture by the white media and black media was evident and existed until now because of the econmoic and population growing power of Latinos in America.Latinos are going to be the largest minority in the year 2005 and America's largest group by 2050 and the black media and white media now support Latinos and Latin pop music and all things Latino have become popular in the mainstream. As America's Latino population and Latin music explosion keeps growing Freestyle will be just as popular as R&B and rap however Rap will alwaus be very popular because you can rap over Freestyle dance beats or even heavy metal rock beats.Rapping is an a musical talent and art form just like signing is.It's not just a music category because you can have rapping over Salsa beat, merengue beat, rock beat, hiphop beat or an r&b beat.Latinos and black Jamaicans rapped first by using dancehall reggae and carribbean music rhymes, later African Americans of Jamaican desent started rapping in a more Americanize style,African Americans embraced and made it popular in their community however Italiam,Irish and even Jewish Whites and Asians were very involved in Early hiphop.Modern hiphop was started in New York City originally by African Americans of caribbean descent mostly Jamaican Americans aswell as Caribbean Latinos,in the west cast Chicanos stated the gangsta rap style and later African Americans made it popular in the mainstream because Latino rap was not allowed to be played because it had alot of Spanish and Latino slang.Latinos were invisible in the history of HipHop to white Americans in suburbia who discovered by seeing blacks on tv however in reality Latinos were involved in Hiphop from the begining and still are just as much as they are involved in Freestyle! With Christian Love Always,OMAR 🙂

BajaPanties is right. Freestyle aint what niggaz wanna hear right now. It used to be (at least among latinos). It still would be if the quality freestyle artists would have stayed true to the game. If freestyle had continued dropping consistantly with that hard hittin' old skool sound, we wouldn't be in this mess right now.

BajaPanties...100% right

Although I'll always have freestyle in my heart.

DJBajapanties...is 100% right on what he commented
ITS NOT A RACE THING...ITS ABOUT TIME THE FREESTYLE
COMMUNITY TAKE RESPONSIBLTIY FOR ITS PRESENT POSITION!

When a music genre is communicating with the public...
no one can hold it back! They tried it with early
Rock&Roll..they tried it with early Hiphop...all with no
success. In the end they still rose to the top...The truth
is freestyle no longer touches the MAJORITY of the young
public. Its not relating to them like it use to back in
the 80's. YOU THINK THE 'POWERS THAT BE' REALLY CARE WHO
MAKES THEIR MONEY FOR THEM?
Freestyle can come from Russia and as long as it makes
money they'll back it. So its not a race
thing.........ITS A GREEN THING!!!

Enough with the Excuses!!!!

...........Peace!

no, i don't think chicanos actually started the gangsta rap movement. they certainly played a major role in it, but artists like schoolly d and ice t were gangsta before say, frost... well, it's of course possible that there are unknown latino artists who started the genre ... but this seems like speculation to me. anyway, latinos have always been important in hip hop - puerto ricans were part of hip hop from day one.

anyway, back to freestyle. i think that there are SEVERAL REASONS for its not being part of the mainstream.

in the article on freestyle by ? on this site the author claims that groups like NKOTB, Paula Abdul and mc hammer ledd to freestyle's demise. This seems rather plausible - there still is other danceable music that is less eighties
and also has melodies. so why should the industry push freestyle when they already have other music that in some way is similar?

btw, of course the industry doesn't mind where the money's coming from, they would even promote a song called "!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! all record companies" just to make a dollar. But what I was saying is that there aren't many ppl interested in freestyle - compared with say hip hop or rock - and that's why the music industry guys think it isn't worth it to promote freestyle. they feel that it's a style that's not part of the mainstream, more underground-like, and that's why they aren't intrestid in it. - hip hop is only so big coz a lot of white ppl are buying the music. and that's also why the music industry started to promote hip hop big time.

Yeah, speaking of coca cola commercial, my favorite one is when they(whoever directed the commercial)had a whole bunch of latinos dark, light, brown, whateva dancing what appeared to be on a rooftop chillin' and salsa dancing to the song playing(and salsa music!)...and i seen this one a couple of times. Then there's the other coca cola commercial with the INDIA "Love and Happiness" playing in a club and people dancing and yada yada yada...then there's the pepsi...lol, ok, enuff...
*WHAT'S IN MY CAR RIGHT NOW cd's: Jigga!! what's my motherF'n Name? and who i roll with, huh??? my....
*AND: "Big pimpin' spendin' da g's, we be...." lol...

**Note: i said what's in my car RIGHT now, not everytime. freestyle is still the shiz....peaceOUTTYYYYYY, UGH!

i remember a soda commercial in the early 90s/late 80s i think i seen it on spanish tv or suttin. if i recall correctly it was a coca cola commercial. i know CORO was in it and i believe selena too. this was waaaay back in the days. i think lisette was in it too and some other latin artist i cant remember who tho. all i remember was that coro was singin some coca cola jingle lmao! does anyone else remember the commercial or am i crazy lol????!!!!
also i remember coca cola had this thing where u could mail in proof that u bought coke and theyd send u free tapes. tapes with george lamond, the cover girls, etc. on them....

I remember that, too.

Aimee,

I remember seeing that commercial on a Spanish-language channel sometime back in the early 90's. I think the other artists in the commercial were George LaMond and, possibly, the Cover Girls.
