made it very far with their music?? let's face it some artist,ex: safire, sweet sensation, cover girls,etc...charted several times on the billboard 100 charts, had several music videos, appeared several times on nationwide tv shows, magazines, and more importantly crossover to the top 40 radio.

well others like judy, johnny o (though did have some success) didn't quite match the success as the above mention.

was it because they were on smaller labels that didnt have the money to really push them further? did these artists have any aspirations to be on a big label or were they content with the way things were going for them at the moment?

your thoughts??

Several factors are going to contribute and play a key part in this discussion. But most importantly, above all, is the artists themselves. The Artist is in control of their own career. However, if they don't have a say, then they are obviously under the wrong management team. Just like a plant, artists need to grow. If you keep a plant in the same pot for years, it's going to eventually grow and die because it has no more room to "expand". Same with many of these Freestyle careers. If you keep an artist under the same conditions for so long, eventually their going to "die" out where as everything around them is changing. And then, when they are eventually given space to breathe, it's much too late. I mean, I can't stress it any more. THE ARTISTS THEMSELVES CONTROL THEIR OWN DESTINY. THEY NEED TO TAKE THE INITIATIVE AND THINK OF WAYS TO BETTER THEMSELVES AND THEIR CAREER. DON'T LEAVE IT UP TO MANAGEMENT TO DECIDE. Management is only concerned with one thing- getting paid. You are not their first priority. Find out what works for you. Create an image. Try different area's of music. Have a say. Write and copyright all of your material. Don't just wait for someone to write a song for you. You're just going to sing it, and collect, if any, 10% of the royalties. God forbid it wasn't a hit.

Lack of education, on a business level, is what it comes down to. Artists need to know what they are getting into prior to signing ANYTHING. This is why artists never made it far with their music.
 
some interesting points there, but lets not forget all the shit we put up with as artists that does get to be too much after while, let's not forget that after a while freestyle didn't pay the bills and still doesn't , so other priorities took place, like taking care of family, before public, or career. True some labels were just in it to make a quick buck, everyone is under the impression that things will always happen, shows will always be there, but as you can see, it didn't turn out that way.

Me? I am glad I have an education and am able to work and pay my bills, I don't see it as an insult, like some do. Insult is, not singing anymore and not having an education to find a real job in the real world. did I digress?..lol oh well, anyway. yes some labels were in it for a quick buck, some artists didn't know any better went into it blindly trusting peeps they thought they could trust, like me unfortunately, but you live and learn, AND YOU NEVER FORGET THE ONES WHO KEPT YOU DOWN...

billy joel goes to various colleges to lecture the music students he alkways makes a point that the students should learn as much about business as they do the music

Nyasia- I agree. Education is always something positive to fall back on. I totally understand where you're coming from. Some artists, like yourself (correct me if I'm wrong), are truly devoted to what they do, and for you it's music. Whether it be full-time or part-time, it's still something that you enjoy and will always enjoy. You never abandoned the music, but you also had to make a living for you and your son, right? Cynthia is doing the same thing. I think she was getting he education in Nursing or something, but she works full-time and performs just like yourself. To make this short, I respect you as an individual, not just an artist, because you are highly devoted to something you do so well.

its still happening...newer artists are working other jobs cuz the music just aint doing it..i know this cuz a couple of my friends are in this situation and it sux cuz one in particular had the freestyle song of the year and this same song was way up there on the yr end countdown and she was working at a fast food place...and yet other artists in the same industry under the same label and management are huge and just living of their music careers yet their music sux majorly things that just make u not only go hmmmmmmmmmm but WTF!!!!!!!!!!

As for me I never intended this to be a career. I do all for the love of music. Ever since I could remember, I always knew that I would do music for the rest of my life. I thank god for the gift and for giving me an opportunity to share it with the fans. I just wish more artists would unite and come together for the love and not for the money. My situation is a bit different from others. I do have a college degree and I have a good job with the city of New York. I just thank god everyday for keeping alive and healthy, because when it all ends, god will always be there for us FREESTYLE HEADS. LETS BOOGGIE JULY 3RD for the love of FREESTYLE music. that was nicley put. i really likethe way you expresed they way how an artist is like a flower and needs to grow. and how the managment is suposed to be the care taker.some people take care of their flowers, others neglect them. eventually the flower (artist) grows and cant due to a small pot. that when it doese get a new pot, it sometimes is already late,as the world changed around them.

some peeps plant and expect a money tree instead.when they dont getthat they walk away.in due time all together over look how the flower grows and blooms. and it is one of the most beautiful things to see an artist develop and bloom.later to know that it is priceless and you had something to do with it.

There are many many many factors why some artist got bigger on radio than others. and it also involves politics and so much more. but im not getting into that.

what matters in the long run..is longevity. alot of people who where on the radio like crazy, they had their spot in time, but so many are today liek it never even hapened. and they wont even admit to it.
others today are still inthe scene, they came back and stuck with it, even if there wasnt any money.


Something about freestyle, is that it has its street roots, it has its scene before the scene ever became an industry. before the fame, radio play, shows etc..you start with nothing. and whenit happens it happens SO FAST. Unless youplan right, you go back to nothing. you never know when the shows start slowing down, when the shows will stop, when the phones start ringing less and less till they eventually stop. when those around you who you thought were their to help you, start all of a suden not returning your calls and are all of a suden Too busy for you. you realize that they only used you, or needed you when they wanted something. and its not only with artist, its with everyone inthe business.

by the way...so that everyone knows...not all managers and labels are only in it for the money. if it was only fo rthe money, alot wouldnt still be around with this freestyle thing. there are some of us industry peopel who really do care and believe in the artist and other artist within the scene. even though we all dont talk all the time cuz we are all busy with our own things, there is that sence of family and unity that really shows itself when we help each other.

there ar many talented people in this freestyle and dance msuic game...and it is comon for many of us to have a job onthe side or side business to pay the bills.

and oh, my god..when you first start out in the industry, internships whatever,new artist......it is SO hard. NO MONEY at all. you bite your teeth and put up with no or very lil income. your family is on your back about giving up on that, getting a "Real" job and settling down.

But it doese pay in the long run. i was lucky enough to have the oportunity to flex my skills in everything from tv to the music industry. I stillhave a double major in school in and am still inschool, work 2 jobs, work with many artist, part of a video company,will have my own column, and so many other things.
im not getting paid or making on everything....but i am still involved becouse i love the music and i love the scene. i love this industry and all the drama that gose with it. all the challenges.

in this game its alot of sacrafices. everyone goese through them.
and even if they dont think so, people take note of that and it will come around.

as far as artist or industry people having a second job etc....its not only freestyle people its almost every one in the music industry.

i wnat to share something with you guys that will kinda open your eyes:

and want it to also serve as a inspiration to all the new comers. take it as a lesson make sure it doesnt happen to you...

i will save the names of people.....but i remeber a year back.. my booking agent who is one of the tops in new york..told me he was coming to miami and wanted me to meet MARSHA... i was like WHO?
and whatever, i showed up anyway to the show.
i metthis girl ,she was sweet, nice dedicated. I talked to her and they told me how over in europe she actually had her main job working in what inthe U.S would be considered the GAP.

we all hung around etc...
when she took to the stage..she blew me away. She was the Original singer of "Castles in the sky". I was cought off gourd and didnt realize that it was marsha from ian van dahl.
the song hit huge everywhere. in due time..she was switched for another girl who continues to sing the ian van dahl songs.

i later asked, whats up with marsha and the responce was..."oh, she still ineurope at their version of "Old navy".

so i kinda feel for her......it is kinda devastating to see someone you know or be that person, to have your song known all over and your working at the gap. then in some cases have your managers or peopel you work with replace you like nothing.

in many cases, unlike freestyle artist, other artist in dance music dont have that neighborhood family thing going between them and the fans. they dont even have that family sence within the industry itself. so it msut be some kind of latin thang that we putinto this scene.

but for the same reason, peopel should always have a back up.
should always educate themselves as much as they can.

and my advice to all the new comers.................

never take NO for an answer. always believe in yourself.

isnt always easy ,like naya said..ther are alot of things that an artist has to go through.but i can also add there are alot of things that those of us who help artist also have to go though..with or without them(or at times without them even knowing about it,lol).
its not only the artist, in some cases it the whole team behind them
and everyone behind the scenes as well. if your getting into production, singing,promotion etc...there are all diferent levels of experineces you must go through and put up with.

dont give up!
if you really want something...it will happen.

it has hapened to me and it is happening to me again as im on my way to my next step. I have also seen it hapen to many freinds of mine (artist, industry) and they can recall if they read this.

(Between you and ashley, on another post, ya'll got me wanting to hear and check out that artist GREY.i like the "youl just dont know! energy". Im talking about including grey in my column when i get back in july.write up, pic etc. lol "You DONT KNOW MY RANGES!!".


And my final advice to people.(cuz i forgot last time).

Dont wait around for others. dont wait for the producers, writers etc. Do what you gata do or move onto the next,but look what your getting into and where you are going.Always take time to reflect on your next move, but dont waste time. in this business years are minutes. you dont have time to waist.
Dont always depend on others, depend on yourself.

and for female artist, work with 2 separate producers and projects or so at the same time.(sorry guys,looking out for the ladies). TRY to stay non-exclusive. Cuz one may not have what it takes, the other one doese. just cuz one flops ,doesnt mean you should have to also. always have a plan B. and sing what you are meant to sing. dont try to be something your not. And i said this to the ladies, in some industry poc kets we got these guys that if your past a ceartain age....they really stop seeing oportunities and only see dificulties. Guys have it less,sometimes.

if they beleive and really want something, also get to know people inthe politics of the real music industry.
