why did freestyle lose its popularity

cuz other things started becoming main stream. Freestyle was hot... until the hip-hop and rock scene started to get bigger. after that... it slowly started to die down. It came back hard around 98-99... then died down... cuz again... other shit started to become main stream. Radio Stations started to change their format, slowly pushing it out of the way... Now we have stations tryin to come back with it...

*note* im only speaking for the Miami area... 😀

Freestyle used to be beutiful lyrics and well produced songs. As time went on the lyrics got worse along with the music. But what really killed it was the mix tape. Labels were not making money off the tapes and people were buying them and not the record. So if the label makes no money there's no product. It's like a big mountain crumbling down. now even the mix tapes are suffering because there's no new product. If the mix tape would have not outsold the record the label would still make money and keep releasing new product. But it didnt happen that way.
No profit? No product.

There is one thing that is certain. With poor promotion and distrbution Freestyle will always stay an intenet based genre..With that said it does take a finacial toll to properly promote and distribute.

Today's releases and the numbers sold tell the tale. Out of all the freestyle sites and it's member 75% of them are the same and mabe 20% of them will actually buy a release. The industry really couldn't give a rats ass if we like it or not, It's the sale numbers that do the talking.

The other part of this is what B.B.K has already stated. Few people know of the new releases, who the artist are or how to get them..Maybe the artist and producers need step think outside the box(damn now sound like a manager)and hit diffrerent sites, locations, stores ect.. the turn out would be better.

If this is going to remain an internet based Genre then it should be the best Internet based Genre!!! quite people don't get noticed!! The one making all the noise will get the attention!!! i.e Freestyle will have to make alot of noise before the industy will look up again to see what's going on.

Freestyle

You need to remember Freestyle music serves a minority. In Chicago, and I'm assuming the east coast freestyle was mainly listened by latinos and some whites.when you have a blend of music that seems to be focused on a segment of the population, it's really hard for big money record companies to give it their full fledge support, thus for it to grow and expand, as it would need to for it to survive and become viable, it would need that support. Now you do have these wonderful producers, artisits, who do such a wonderful job of providing the music, but you can only excpect so much with what limited resources they would have to utelize. As freestyle came into the next generation, the late 90's, there wern't as many around to carry the torch. There is alot of money to be made in the music buisness, if you can look at indivisual's like Sean Combs, and many others like him, you can start with literaly nothing and begin your own empire. What i'm getting at is,your not going to find to many indivisuals investing their time and money into freestyle, when they can apply their musical talents, wheather it be producing, promoting, performing, pitching, to other musical subjects where they can possibly have a very lucritive future there.

Thus there is not as much freestyle outthere to be played, promoted, produced, pitched. You have now what they like to call in the music buiness "stagnation".

your statment is also true. Investors would rather bank on something that is already established rather than something that right now is faltering at best.

The minority is quickly becoming the majority, so the NEW figures/numbers suggest. The key lies in all of us. For starters we have to, like our brotha's & sista's (black race), exposed our children to the music in their early years. One reason I think Rap music is so popular is because of these small kids going to school busting the new 50 cent raps. They are exposing the other kids to it through the old word of mouth medium and it grows on them. So it is up to our generation and our kids, as the present ones (teens) are barely hanging on, to revive this genre. Again, esp. if we are becoming the majority in the next few decades.

The other thing I believe needs to happen is the Freestyle producers need to set their standards a lot higher. I mean I see & buy a new FREESTYLE CD with a number of artists on them, but out of the 12 or 14 songs on the CD, less than 50 % of the songs/artists are worth listening to. This crap needs to stop. If it can't stop, then let set goals. Let's make 60 to 70% of the new Freestyle in these CDs better and then raise the bar and go for 70 to 85 % and so on, until our goals our met.

All, please don't label me a racist because I'm not one and well, cause I do own a COLOR tv. Also, I don't have experience in the production world and I don't claim to know it all, but I have been making these observations for years. It is up to now that this site has been presented to me that has allowed me a chance to voice my opinion. And so BOOM goes the dynamite and I'm out of here.

Have a GN yous! Much love from Texas!!

Correct

Hi DJ dee-x-man, I'm in Austin.Your right, the minority is soon becoming the majority.I won't get into numbers, you can do so much research on latinos becoming 20% of the population, and more then fourty percent in major urban area's like Chicago, Los Angelas, New York, Miami. And even when we wern't, freestyle still made a major impact with in these urban areas. The thing is to get it out to the rest of the country.I remember when I was at the University of Illinois in 1994, a great year for the freestyle movemnet, especially in Chicago, you had Legacy, Law,Willie Crespo, Rochelle.Yet four hours way in Champagne, Illinois, freestyle was non-existent, on the radio or in the clubs.I think freestyle can become viable and influential if it continued to grow with the population that's supports it.Only time will tell. Your are telling the truth when you say we need to push it on to the younger generation.Just like I said in my earlier post. There wern't as many freestyle fanatics to carry it into the next geneartion. And as far as quality of the music, will your always going to have good and bad, wouldn't you agree. To be honest with you, I think more then half the rap that is released is just not any good, to be honest I think most of it sucks.Really, how can you get any quality when you release two albums in a year, like most of these guys do.But rap is not really about music, it's about status and representation of the rapper. My buddy had the new Ludacris CD, and I listened to it on a drive from Texas to Oklahoma.I think maybe 1 song on their was actually worth listening to.Take it easy there.

Hello Courts, nice to see a fellow Texan responding with his point of view too. I appreciate your feedback. Yeah, I guess we can't expect all new CDs to be 100% good, but we can still demand a better product, right? After all, we are the consumers.

Nice to hear from you COURTS... peace!!

"goodbye,......so long,.....adios,..........see you later..........I'll misss you,.........hope to see you soon,........"

................Oh! sorry, just practicing all the ways to say "goodbye", so I will have no trouble as ENERGY 92.7/101.1 Arizona's Dance Authority slowly and slightly changes it's format due to low ratings and a fired Program Director, because I will be saying goodbye to Science, Malyssa, Jennifer Glass, Sharyn Maceren.......etc. Stay posted for more details coming shortly, on my EXTREME VIEWPOINTS, coming soon..........

the new 97.5 Latino Beat....

THE Gay 104.7 kiss f.m.......

Correct again

You are correct then, you shouldalawys ecpect a better product.I remember in the early to mid 1990's when I would drive into Chicago to buy records, I would but maybe ten for about seventy bucks, and a couple of the records just sucked. That was before you could sample records, as we see in today's stores. I would think to myself, where do some of these people get the nerve to put out such krap.I still have a whole bunch of records that to this day I have listened to only just once. You guys take care.

...........C-U-Later.............aaaight then..........later man.................holla back...........farewell.................I'm fixed to bounce...................later..............I'm out.........................

.....Oh! Sorry again! I'm still practicing all the best ways to say goodbye so I'll be well prepared and do very well at it, so when ENERGY 92.7/101.1 here in Arizona is all done with their slight changes in their playlist, I will be very well prepared to say goodbye once they remove most of the freestyle songs they have, because I will be saying goodbye to Christina Marie, Mon A Q, Sharyn Maceren, Science, L.I.V., Malyssa..........etc., and I know this because the program director that brought all those songs was fired due to low ratings, and I notice a lot of the songs I liked are gone. They are going back to their old way before the NEW SOUND OF ENERGY came, literally, because I'm hearing an incredible amount of all the songs that came out LAST YEAR, as if we were still in 2004, and in addition to this, the same songs are being played over and over more often. I doubt that this is going to help their ratings because now, as much as I care about ENERGY 92.7/101.1, I'm listening to OTHER stations.....well, somewhat listening to other stations..............mostly A.M. 550 KFYI, your news, weather, traffic, and.........TALK STATION, (as they like to say it). I don't see what's so bad about freestyle, but I guess many people do, so I'll just stick to my c.d.'s or the BRAND NEW 97.5 LATINO BEAT, #1 for REGGAETON & SPANISH HIP HOP. There is POTENTIAL of some freestyle coming here because many freestyle artists are hispanic, that station already plays some latin house, and I assume that at some point they will have mix shows, which means at some point at least Jonny Z. and D.J. Laz will be played. Then not only that, they will have to, or it would be sensible that they have an old school time section to play older songs from back in the day, where I'm expecting that some freestyle would be played. So far, they are just playing music - mostly Reggaeton, with a few latin pop songs, and some R&B and hip hop songs that currently are being played on our Hip Hop station here in Phoenix.

Oh, before I forget, SOMETHING is going on, and I think SOMETHING IS GOING TO HAPPEN...... I was listening to future flava's the other day on POWER 92.3 #1 FOR HIP HOP & R&B, and I could not believe what I heard. All I really have to say is that if things continue the way they are going, dance music will come back because at some point, some popular artist will make an up-tempo hit song, which will be very big, and other artists will start following that direction of music. I thought 1,2 step, and some other songs I heard were a big deal, but....... Not compared to what I heard Yesterday. They had to use a freestyle instrumental to talk over yesterday after mixing out of that song because of it's B.P.M., and I stood there in total shock as they played it. I can't wait for Missy's new single......

As a loyal freestyle fan i have noticed from the past years that the male population does not like freestyle. Why you ask? mainly cuz freestyle is not like hip hop/rap or alternative/hard rock, which males mainly listen to mostly on the west coast. Many males and some females think that freestyle is sort of "weak". A guy doesnt want to hear about love, he wants to hear about big cars, sexy girls, and money. They think a guy who listens to freestyle is a $#%!, which in turns drives most people away from the music. thats not gonna to help, allong with the crappy tracks that are and were put out. In the past i have bought some freestyle cds for maybe a track or two, the rest of the cd sucks. whether the song would have good beats and instramentals and horrible vocals, or visa versa. also, the radio stations are putting out the wrong songs to promote freestyle, mostly local artist. some of thse artist are good but not good enough to promote and represent freestyle to an audience which is unfamilar with the music. they need something that will capture thier mind and open a new door to freestyle. if stations played artist like willie v( who most popele on the west cost sadly dont know who that is) or collage(besides "ill be loving You" and many other east coast artists , directions might change.

Many people refer to freestyle as techno or dance music, in reality its not, but does someone who has been listening to hip hop most their lives know the difference? not really. I do not intend on smashing hip hop or any other music other than freestyle but lets face it, hip hop is where its at today. Its a materialistic world, if your not hip hop your square.

There are many freestyle songs out there that have much potential , if remixed or edited a little the songs will mostly likely come out really good. Im not a dj or ahve any relations with the music industry but i would love to some how try to make that difference, that extra push that todays freestyle needs.

well thats my opinion, take it however you want. and thanks for takeing time out to read it.

by the way the nu image cd, great! need more freestyle like that!

In France, and I think in the rest of Europe too (except for Germany) when you're using the term "Freestyle", people think about Rap/Hip Hop!!!
Exactly Francis....same in Italy, Spain, and Croatia. U're right, freestyle to them is rap freestyle......that's so sad!
