I don't want to stir up a comotion but the term Freestyle dates back before 1986. The reason I know this is, when I use to BreakDance, the name of our breaking crew was called "F.S.F.K" short for Freestyle Freshkids. We did not come up with the term Freestyle, but used it because that was a street term used around our way back then. So it's origin must be some time in 1983. If anyone doubts this I have pictures to prove it. This is also where we got the name for our compilation.🙂
Ok guys, i first heard the term "Freestyle" (in reference to the music we all love) around 1991. I think what we're all trying to figure out here is when was it originally adopted to refer to Freestyle music...it doesn't matter if it came out before in rap, biking, swimming, etc...when did it first get used to refer to Freestyle music?
When I first heard the term Freestyle was back in 1990 " there was a freestyle column in street sound magazine which "Peter "the greek " Ivals was the writer before bernie rosenberg came and took over. the first edition of the column was called "MAIMI" and then was change to "Freestyle".. so we all agree that it started around the early 90's.... I first thought that they got it from the group "Freestyle" Don't stop the rock", but I guess not..... But freestyle can confuse the non freestyle fans..... some may think it's Rap freestyle or Freestyle Bike or even freestyle swimming....... So I always have to explain to them it's influence by ELECTRO funk and combine with latin rythmn and deals with love, the joy of love , the pain of love, with 808 beats, many influence by Planet rock, Jive BPM 122, Egyptain Lover, Twilight 22... But we all wanna know who created the term " FREESTYLE".... back in the 80's I called it FUNK then GINO Music.. becuase our large population of italianos in TORONTO... anywas..... who ever can give us an answer..... we are all curious
sup everyone!
chillin over here in brooklyn........i first heard the term freestyle back in the 80's when pretty tony released the electro classics by the group freestyle.......i also have a couple of dance music magazine's from 1988 and in them there are a few reviews which describes loose touch " bad of the heart" as latin freestyle. theres also more reviews of the rios sisters, corina, brenda k starr and all of them describe those singles as latin-freestyle. and this is back in 1988!

Franco Carlos,
I like your answer!!! U sound U like U practically gave the music a "Dictionary Definition". I too heard the term Freestyle in the early 90's. Before that it was just club music to me!
'Fuhget' all that junk about Freestyle biking or whatever. Freestyle will always have meaning for the muzik I love! Even the "freestyle rap" doesn't come close! As for "Heartthrob"....it sounds a little dirty! I guess anything with the words "throb" in it sound nasty to me!
Most of us know that the name Freestyle was invented before 1986. But who or what started the idea to call this music we all love, Freestyle music?
I only remember it originating at the same time the term "New School" started. It was in those "New School Freestyle" mixes on the George Lamond and Lisette Melendez 12" singles. (There were probably a few other records before these that bears this term.) I thought they started using this term to differentiate this sound from "Old School", like Debbie Deb, Egyptain Lover, and Soul Sonic Force. Maybe producers figured this "New School" Freestyle sound was a direct lineage from these "Old School" Electrohop songs.

Delicious D. That's so true. When I say "Freestyle" to my friends from up North, they don't understand me. When I let them hear it, they always say, "Oh, you mean High Energy!" 🙂
One of my old Hot 103/97 tapes has a commercial on it advertising a party at the "All new Studio 55"...I'm positive the tape is from Christmas time 1988.....They say on the commercial "the best in Latin Freestyle acts performing live on stage".....FYI the acts performing at this show were Sweet Sensation, Solid ("Loving You"), Only In The Dark (pre "Together Forever" Lisette Melendez) and Cynthia. Ahhhh those were the days.........
