first time i saw the word "freestyle" being used was on metropolitan's FREESTYLE extravaganza. before that it was always called latin hip-hop. then, to my understanding, people started calling it 'freestyle' cuz that's the way they danced to it.

Ok Here it Is
It Was Known As LOFT,Latin Hip Hop And So Forth.
The Market Were Mainly Latin.
No One Knew What Exactly It Was.
One Day The Guido's Were Pumpin It...And Some Guido Was Like " Whats That Pumpin " The Other Dude Was Like " Thats Ummm That That Freestyle Music " And The Name Derived From What A Guido Thought It Was Called. And FREESTYLE's Name Was Born. No Joke People Thats The Truth 😀

The first time I ever saw the word Freestyle used for what was then known as either Latin Hip-Hop/Hearthrob or simply as "Club" was in 1990 on the 12" single for "YOU'RE THE ONE FOR ME" by April. The extended club mix is called the "Classic Freestyle" mix...

THATS FUNNY HOW THEY CALLED APRILS DANCE VERSION "CLASSIC FREESTYLE" WHEN IT WASNT EVEN RELEASED YET TO BE A "HIT"!! BUT THE WORD "FREESTYLE" HAS BEEN USED TO DECRIBE DIFFERENT MIXES FOR A LONG TIME B4 THAT.....

WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL, WE WERE ABLE TO CHOOSE DIFFERENT THEMES ON OUR RINGS WITH A WORD. SO, IN 1989, I CHOSE THE PIC OF A GUY RIDING A BIKE (I WAS HEAVILY INTO BIKING BACK THEN) AND UNDER THE "BIKE" PRINT WAS THE WORD "FREESTYLE" !!

NOW, HOWS THAT FOR DEDICATION!!! I WISH I STILL HAD THE RING!!! (IT GOT STOLEN) 🙁

I first saw it on George Lamond's and Lissette Melendez's records. Probably Ligosa and Berrios made the term popular. I don't know if they came up with it.

As far as Heartthrob, that was really the name that Little Louie Vega gave his remixes. No one else was using that.

I never heard the term Latin Hip Hop, until the Second Generation TV show. Like I've said before, I don't like using that term, because Old School Freestyle, before it was called Freestyle, had a lot of White and Black artists. Plus there's more influence from and resemblance to Electrohop and R&B Dance than Tropical or Mexican music.

WOW.......People Dont Like 2 Listen Huh?
Read My Post......CAREFULLY.....I Dont Talk False Things Man.....

HOT 97 started using the word "FREESTYLE" in 1991. no disrespecting my fellow paisons, but i dont think we started the word. it was used as a term in which the singers used thier lyrics, in a "free-style", just coming out of thier mouths.

Lmaoooooooooooooooooooo..........Bro........It Was Used A Little Before 91 Man...Trust Me...😉

Now, I got like a million different origins for the term! Groovy!!! So somebody just "decided" to name it "FREESTYLE"? That's weird! I have to admit, I called it "Club music" once upon a time too, but now I think of club music in a much broader sense (Club Music to me can be Euro, House, Trance, Freestyle, etc, etc). I once got into an argument with this chick from Chicago over what the muzik was called! She SWORE up & down Chicago came up with the name "Hearthrob" before the New Yorkers came up with "Freestyle" & that Chicagoans invented the muzik! Talk about your dumb-*ss arguments!!! That's like saying Chinese food was invented here in Florida or something No Joda! Anywho, Freestyle is a nice term! 🙂

Its one of those "slurpee" "white out" "PC (personal Computer)" situation a Machintoch MAC is a PC too. I think something close to elear said really happened.
I personally think think the name should be HEARTBEAT, and it can go along with BREAKBEAT and/or BREAKDANCE

Putanna
I also have seen the words "Hearthrob" at one time out here in Chicago. I saw the board at this record store and they catergorized as Hearthrob. Then like over night it was called Freestyle. As far as Chi-town coming up with the title, I don't know.

Peace
Gato
