I just listened to 7 more new school freestyle cd`s over the weekend that up and coming artists sent to me.First I would like to say that if your going to do dance music please stop with the 1987 to 1993 sounds. Please!!!
Make good music from the heart that will touch yourself as others. It`s 2004 and freestyle has morphed into today`s sounds of artists like Reina,Tina Ann etc.If you want to be successful in Dance music start doing some new and creative things. Some of these artists that I hear are very talented, but are wasting their time and money by making demo`s with weak material.I would rather see an artists save their money, and wait untill they can create a great demo with a great producer. You can be the most talented vocalist in the world and a bad track with bad vocal production will cut you down to a artist with a bad track and weak vocals.Don`t settle for a ok sounding demo.Get a plan together before you enter the studio and do it right.I don`t want to piss on anyone`s parade, but all this weak material has to stop being sent around. It`s a embrassesment for the artists and for freestyle or dance music. Back in July of 2003 I did a freestyle concert that had a lot of new school freestyle artists. The artists that I picked for that show I felt were some of the stronger new artists out, and I would still like to see many of those artists
doing some stronger material. If you have the talent use it the best way you can. Many of the so called old school freestyle artists aren`t doing freestyle because it does not sell.If a established freestyle artist with a fanbase can`t get any radio why would radio break a record of a up and coming freestyle artists. If I`m the PD I would play a Coro record before I play a new freestyle artist. Selling 2,000 or 40,000 units is not selling well. It`s a start but that start can hurt you more than help you.Wouldn`t you rather do a track that is strong and sell maybe 100,000 to 1,000,000.Yes it will be pop.Oh yeah I said it POP,but all POP is is popular music. You can still have a freestyle element and sell well.Look at Rockell, that had a freestyle element with a updated today sound.
I want to see everyone who loves this music and who loves to sing become superstars.I love freestyle as much if not more than anyone, but someone needs to state the truth. The days of freestyle with the old sounds have almost no chance of ever getting on steady rotation around the country.I am not posting here to diss anyone.Rather I am giving you the truth of what many industry people won`t tell you.
I love DOO WOP music, but I`m not going to make a record sounding like a song from the 50`s.I might remake one with an updated sound ,and that`s all I am telling you.Keep freestyle alive by advancing it.Don`t let it linger anymore in the 80`s.Bring it to 2004.Write about love and the pains of love like most of the great freestyle songsdid, but make it edgy with all the sounds of today.
Much Love and respect to all!!!
May your dreams and desire`s never die untill all is achieved........

Sal, thats what Ive been saying this whole time!!

its nice that they love the freestyle sound but what your basically getting are new artists performing an old sound.

Freestyle in 2004 should sound like the Johnny Budz remix of "Deja Vu" by The Roc Project. Excellent song and strong production with an equally strong vocal. Kudos to Budz for saving that song. It just got added to KTU.

yes i agree that the johnny budz mix is godd.
but i think it should also be more urban sounding as well.[urban like usher not r&b but urban ]

i think it should sound a little more like dance with the feel of classic freestyle to it. i like rockell and jocelyn enriquez. they keep current.:dgrin also i love nya's song that sounds very clubbish. if i could see you know.

it should be freestyle and dance beats with a little street edge to it like. Freestyle isnt added to the radio because radio is a big corporation not willing to take chances.

I disagree with Sal's comment, Freestyle in the 2004 should be whatever it wants to be, as long as it makes you dance and has a great production, lyrics, and great vocals, I think that well produced jam with the eighties sound with a few new elements can bring back what is called FREESTYLE!!!!!!!

Interesting Thread

I agree with Sal and will also add that the business of freestyle, strike that Urban Dance also has to mature. To me Freestyle is an era a time in history (the best time of my life) and it will forever have its place in history. The word freestyle is a stigmatism that does not represent anything positive for the industry but means the world to the fans. There has to be a balance and/or understanding between the music makers and the music listeners. That is why I am working to advance k7's idea on a seminar moreso a convention which I think is a positive step for everyone involved from the fan to the artist and everyone in the middle. Once my plan is set on paper I will submit such plan to the likes of Sal B, K7, and many others with who has and is making a strong impact on the genre.

Sal B, thanks for the thread. Great topic and good points.

Humbly Submitted,

I think your both correct. I love Freestyle. I mean the 808 drum loop, thr orchastra hits, the fat bass lines, but at the same time, it needs a upgrade. I think if we keep the old formula but use new Sounds, like trance and Hi Energy sounds, we will be on the rite track. Like the new Azn Break Beats. Thats very progressive but yet still has old freestyle influence like the drum beat you can pop to. and the strings and synthasisers.

Hey Unique, then what is it that you not agree with.I said the same thing you did.Make a record with updated sounds.Don`t make it sound like a eighties track.I see that you have a freestyle label. How many records do you have in steady rotation around the country? Not mixshows /not one time spot plays.Steady rotation.I have been in dance music for nearly 20 years.I have been in the freestyle game since the very begining.Artists like Coro,Judy,George and others have all grown up together in this business.I am no way putting anyone down, but let`s face the reality that classic sounding freestyle will be next to impossible to get radio adds.

Sal is a Legend of this music.. If he says it's sounds dated, and wants more creativity, then something must be wrong. It's the same thing that our camp is trying to do. reinvent the feel, the culture, the attitude. Make it soulful and sparse.

Good observation Sal.. Now can I borrow a dollar?

i think freestyle is going to tgo inot 2 directions many more flavors one direction is more urban the other more pop dance sort of like rockell tina ann

Thatnks for the compliment Ty...Much Love and respect

Hey Sal, Yes I do have a freestyle label, how many records do I have in steady rotation around they country? I wont find out till I release the material I'm working with, but I will definitely have an answer for you. Yes, I’m using the eighty sounds , and I'm not getting into details of how I'm going about it, however, I know who you are, your a legend, I seen The Kings & Queens of Freestyle DVD, and I respect your work! And I agree with you of the true harsh reality of the classic sounding freestyle IS impossible to get radio adds, but someone has to change the typical techniques that freestyle has been using but at the same thing maybe an eighties sounds to go along with it. Every genre has its comebacks, and I think radio wont play our songs because it doesn't attract the youngsters. In my opinion the mainstream has the youth sold on artists like Eminem, 50 cents, etc... Freestyle should come out with a video that the youth can relate too, and I'm not talking about Hoochies with G strings, or flashing all that Gold, and bling bling or whatever today's video bring to the table, but something that will spark the youngster eye like a huge car show, breakdancers, DJ's, and pretty models. Something new or something that the youngsters can relate to. Most of the youngsters now are stuck on that thug shit or hard music and personally I'm sick and tired it. I understand most of the freestyle fans are around my age and older, and I hear that it was our time, and now it’s gone, blah blah blah. To keep it alive change is necessary but yet still keep the old school sound alive. If you meant the same thing, My apologies bro, I just want to make a difference in this freestyle game, and I respect lots of producers and artists work, but freestyle needs to step up to the plate and Swing Batta Swing just like K7 did so we can make this music Goodie Goodie just like Lisette did, but keep it freestyle!

I agree with you Unique that all the Hip Hop songs are all about the same stuff, and it does get annoying.(BUT)That is where music is today however. An artists like Eminem sells a unbelieveable amount of records.Freestyle even in it`s heyday only sold decent in maybe 10 to 12 markets, and many of thoses records never sold over 50,000 units.I know because in many cases I got the deals with the major labels and recieved all the statements.Artists like Eminem and 50 are in the 10 to 20 million range.Huge difference.Artists like them not only control the music, but also the fashion of today`s youth.
At many of the freestyle concerts I do throughout the year many of the freestyle artists dress in jerseys, baseball caps and with a hip hop look.So it even effects them to a degree.
I WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOU SELL 10 MILLION UNITS OF ONE YOUR ARTISTS.It would make me proud, but I just think it`s impossible.Same way you wouldn`t want one of your artists to have a mullet haircut with doc martin shoes like we did in the 80`s.The same way the fashion changes the music must also.I know sometimes music and fashion come back, and I think it true more with fashion than music but do your thing.
I wish you all the luck and success in the world.I only hope you or someone else proves me wrong.Just remember that artists that started in freestyle and pushed it to another level have all become multi platnium superstars.Marc Anthony, Mariah Carey,Anastacia,K7 and even artist that turned to spanish George LaMond,Brenda K Starr ,Safire and others have had success.Even Lissette`s and Cover Girls biggest hits weren`t freestyle Goody Goodie and Wishing on a Star.
Again prove me wrong and take it to the top,Much love and respect.

I hear you Sal, thanks for your wishes bro, LOL :lol 10 million units, nah, thats not my goal, my goal is to put back Freestyle on the map. R&B have there music about love, and so do we(freestylers). I'm not saying I will take it to the next level, but I'm pretty sure someone out there will do it! It's all about unity. Much love and respect to you too and everyone reading this post.

Freestyle will come back, thats a fact. And I dont think it has to be changed all that much. Just before it faded away, we had the right sound. in 1996 Angelina, Daize , and Spanish Fly were dropping a new flavor that was hot! Those cds have nothing 1980's about them. Sarrani and Kenny freestyle , again have nothing 1980;s. Alll the Galaxy freestyle from Randy Taylor Webber had nothing 1980;s about it. I mean who thought "in a Dream" sounded like it ws from the 80's? We just need to make it heard and force feed down Societys narrow minded throats. Freestyle is tight just the way it is, as long as it dont sound TOO DAMN OLD. LOL, Its not played on the radio because its not liked , its because NO ONE KNOWS WHAT IT IS! It needs PROMOTION and HYPE, VIDIOS , Fashion LINES, OUR shit Is Raw People! Its off the hook music that needs more qxsposure and a new image like stated above. Newer sounds , Yes I agree, but Dont Turn It In to some Bubble gum ass pop Music . Then Freestytle will Be Dead 4 Realz.

And how so exactly? R&B, euro, pop, and slow jams does not give anyone the feeling of lacin' a phat breakbeat the way freestyle does. I've heard you several times claim that your camp is trying to further the cause of freestyle music but when the actual music is released it's nothing more than watered down pop music that stands for very little at all. The reason why freestyle was once so strong was cuz it related to young people. Most guys in their late teens and twenties make fun of pop music and euro. Many freestyle artists feel as if freestyle is making them look bad, but the truth of the matter is that these old school artists who are known as freestyle are making freestyle music look bad by releasing all that pop and euro. People then associate freestyle with pop and euro and no one wants to be down with that.

What I said is simply too real. You know exactly what I'm talking about and that's why freestyle has no chance. It's over cuz it's so called leaders stand for nothing but trying to sell out. Why should anyone back a movement like that?

Every artists wants their music to go POPular.( Thats how you sell units and make money)You are not a sell out if you love and believe in the music you are doing.Freestyle WAS the music for young people, but now it`s the hip hop movement or maybe people listen to rock.Dance music has a very small place in the industry and freestyle even smaller.Dance music that does sell well goes POP.
Most freestyle artists need to work day jobs because they can`t support themselves with their freestyle carrers. That`s not keeping anything real for thier talent.Make Big records get Big paydays.
