Please stop saying that Freestyle is DEAD!
What the hell is supposed to mean...If Freestyle was DEAD you won't have no new Freestyle products.
You still have new stuff, right?
Freestyle is just an underground music but it is not DEAD!

excuse my french BUT it's barely alive.

Freestyle isnt going anywhere, not now.

if it wants to live, breathe new life into again.

Not the same old PLANET ROCK beat.

You dont see "hip-hop" using the same elements it evolved from, do you? It is constantly changing. Always innovating.

DISCO has long since been dead but artists & groups doing the occasional show here and there and being played on the radio doesnt consitute it being "alive" either.

yes, its still being made BUT it has the same, old sound. There are quite a bit of very talented artists out there that In my opinion, can break free of the old sound BUT its up to them and the producers to do it.

Kenny,

I disagree. The overall sound of Freestyle has changed, quite dramatically, over the last 11 years. A lot of recent releases (1999 to the present) have been very “electronic” sounding. BPMs are much faster, the passion and emotion that used to be felt while listening to our music is all but gone. I will not deny that there are few great new artists out there right now, but if new Freestyle music continues to sound as it has for the last few years - I’m sorry to say that aside from the few fans on these boards willing to purchase it, it most likely won’t go any further than that. I have been saying for years that Freestyle needs to return to it’s roots and stop trying to be something that’s it’s not. A lot of people have been saying that Freestyle needs to change with the times and update it’s sound. Freestyle has changed and many artists and producers have attempted to add something new with little or no success. You can’t just throw a “breakbeat” behind a Trance record and tell everyone that it’s the “New Freestyle”.

I have been saying for years that in order to move ahead into the future Freestyle needs to dig into it's past. If a decade of change and so-called evolution hasn't worked, why are people still trying to change the formula?

Freestyle was never broken so why did anyone ever feel the need to fix it?

Rhoq, its all the same to me. All the songs on LATINOMIX sound identical. its like one long extended club mix.

I mean, if the sound has changed, why isnt it selling?

Kenny,

Right now it seems that there are only a handful of producers willing to record new Freestyle music, luckily for the fans those still working their asses off in the studio are season veterans. They all have their signature sound. When you hear songs produced by the same people back-to-back sooner or later you are going to get a feeling of "Deja Vu".

What I am saying though is if you listen to any Freestyle song recorded between 1984 & 1992 and then compare the sound with a new Freestyle song produced between 1999 and 2004 you will notice a huge difference. That's without mentioning all of the stuff they tried in California, Texas and Florida with mixing the House, Trip-Hop and Trance with Freestyle. A few of these experiments caught on, and made a little noise but most fell on deaf ears and went nowhere except for a few dedicated Freestyle fans' MP3 players.

I know but there is nothing new to the sound thats out right now for freestyle. most of the songs sound the same, theres no originality. the melody is pretty lame and there is nothing "new" added to the beats. there's "spice" in it anymore.

im not trying to diss any artists. Like I said, there are plenty of aritists that I know with tremondous talent and fantastic people backing them up. Its just that the majority of the stuff out there is pretty weak. It's like the records on METROPOLITAN & ZYX. they produced "quantity" and not "quality".

I agree - the only problem is most of the stuff thats comeing out of Cali, stays in cali. Its the same with Texas and the rest of the noted locations. Its not that New artists arnt doing there jobs-Its distribution and promotion. I really enjoy the newer freestyle , in fact its all i listen to thease days. But I have to really SEARCH for this stuff!! To some people its just not worth it. So they are stuck with the old stuff.

The 2nd problem is Change. People want something new but when they hear it , they start biching that its not freestyle. It IS FREESTYLE. Its just not the freestyle they are used to.

SUPPORT NEW FREESTYLE ____THERE THE ONES KEEPING IT ALIVE!!!!!

My one word would be "Timeless"

It's music and origin are based heavily on Latino/Latina artists. Yes there were other contributors but the list speaks for itself.

I say it's timeless because it is still loved by many and heavily played in the barrio, the jams around the way. There are radio shows like latinomix that put it on rotation along another popular and timeless music Our latin music; Salsa, Merengue Bachata, etc.......
I see 15 year olds knowing the words to the classic songs. They are not ashamed of it neither. It's the guys that f--k it up tryin to be hard by listening to nothing other than hip hop.
Anyway; Just like Salsa and other latin music; they don't care if your light, dark, skinny, fat, tall, small; they love the music. Shit; if they rotated salsa all day; it would sound like one big record too.
The missing element is rotation at nightclubs and more radio time. I used to go to hearththrob and see little louie vega spin on three turntables and a reel to reel. Like Hip Hop there was crowd participation; Lower the sound system in the middle of the mix and people were screaming the words to the songs. Then there were those special mixes (THE EDIT MIXES) giving flavor to flavorless songs or kicking the doors wide open on already good songs.
Saturday night dance parties all filled with freestyle; we all listened to it on the way to the club and on the way back home (if you left early)

There isn't anything but excuses; and I hate to say it or stir up controversy;in fact I'm gonna leave it alone. This music is exploited in so many ways it isn't even funny. Anyhow; I know in the hood across every state/border theres people listening; there are artists now from all races/ethnic backgrounds putting out new music and it's a good thing.

Regardless; 10 years from now the era from 1982 - 1992 (i'm including electro/club era) will always be remembered for the music and Freestyle will always be around in one form or another and yes 10 years from now; there will be a 10 year old kid and a 15 year old kid who knows all the words to the freestyle songs and happily singing them while grandma and Mommy plays celia cruz and tito puente on the clock radio in the kitchen while they are cooking.

Dare I say 2004 will be a staple in the era of this music?!?

my one word : "my life"

sorry 2 words.....

freestyle has suffered many blows in the last decade and the artists and producers all have to get together and do that one thing today that is not done.....

give up ????

it's called finishing the track....

most peeps today don't finish a track and all they do is record what i consider to be a demo and submit it to wktu, latinomix, badboyjoe , what if, and a few peeps on the sites in the form of mp3 files.....

take the time to finish your tracks and don't just dish it out ....come up with some type of marketing for yourself.....
freestyle has suffered because of lack of finished production, cheesy vocals, poor marketing, bashing on sites, the "can i get a copy" person, and just the rush to hear it on latinomix because we know wktu will not play it or to see it for sale in tower records(example) .....

stop the madness and know you are selling yourself short in this bizz..

"keep freestyle alive and don't keep freestyle free"

i been in it from the beginning....
i was in the clubs spinning when freestyle broke out and i was one of the pioneers in my area for freestyle and then you had those other dj's(rap) that couldn't get a job in the clubs because they didn't play rap....now that's all you hear in the clubs and unless i sellout freestyle, i will most likely not spin in any clubs in philly..

i have been asked to spin but, they want rap, trance, house music......i have not sold out and stay true to what i love and produce......freestyle music....

one thing is for sure: freestyle is the only thing in my car stereo, house stereo, and in my blood....and i'm still alive

Yes "timeless" is a great word for Freestyle. It is the best yet and although your explaination is perfect..the term needs no explaination at all..that's what's great about it.
I like to use the word
Lovelorn :bereft of love or of a lover

As for Freestyle being underground I ask you this....Is it possible for "underground" to be big and hit a chord?? Of course it is. I don't know about the rest of you but it's nowhere to be found under or above ground here in NYC and let's face it if it's in NYC ...then it's big.
Too many ideas coming from too many different places. I admit it is alive but certainly not kicking!!!!!!!

:blah to all who oppose

that just about sums up all types of music like classic rock, metal, new wave. its still being played and the songs are in some people's hearts BUT IT'S STILL OLD!!!!!

Kenny Guido; it's still old
And your point is? "It's still old"
or did you mean:
Is it a money maker? Hmmm; there are five badboyjoe compilations and is still very well stocked in major record store chains. There are about 8 albums already dropping before june this year which feature many new artists.
Yah; any genre of music can be defined as old. Is there a new form of music coming out that you know about? Do tell! I'm just ufcking with you man.
Point is as trends resurface so will this music time and time again; time will tell with 2004; we live by the soundscan so; we'll see.
TIMELESS my man. It was red hot then and when it resurfaces it garners alot of attention.
The neptunes took the time to do a semi-decent freestyle track on Kelis' newly released cd. 2004; will be a staple in this era.
