Freestyle is not the only music that's dying, as a matter of fact it's just transformed into a new sound and been desquised under different names, just like hip hop would have thought to be dead now if it wasn't for much airplay because hip hop really has changed when timbaland and missy elliot got clever and creative and changed the sound and had everyone else - even pop and some alternative artists trying to copy and imitate their beats. (and this is one of the ways pop, r&b, and hip hop came more together, and since pop was big around the time these new 'futuristic' urban beats were made, it brought r&b and shortly after came this r&b with rap in it style that paved the way for hip hop now, (and notice that even today, most of the music on the charts now, on top 40 radio, and all over t.v. are r&b singing with rap in it, not the real hip hop that it used to be rapping about something that made sense) it's just a lot of thugs in love now). But my point about freestyle not being the music that's dying in a more clear example is this: booty bass music has died by far much faster than freestyle, and more people are willing to play a new freestyle/breakbeat song than a new booty bass song. Luka can't even make anymore compilations like the ones he had made. So so def bass allstars can't even do anything now except just produce hip hop and r&b remixes to hip hop and r&b songs, and you can remove the word "bass" from so so def now because that's over. 2step/garage albums and compilations? they just gave up and combined 2step music with breaks and drum & bass music, so I had to get "gotta get thru this" by Daniel Beddingfield & DND on a compilation with bass breaks & beats, which was full of breakbeat, drum & bass and 2step. The only booty bass albums you will find these days are old booty bass c.d.'s with old school artists, or new compilations full of old/classic booty bass songs. I think pop is kind of beginning to die - if it wasn't for Jessica Simpson and Jojo to come out and be successful. Britney Spears? I don't know what to call her stuff because she could have been in the r&b category but that "toxic" song just threw her right back to pop, or dance if you want to call it that since it is all over the dance charts. Freestyle will never die, and dance music will never die because it seems like dance music stations are popping up more than going away, and the stations where dance music is going away probably wasn't a dance station anyway, it was probably latin, hip hop, top 40, old school/jammin' r&b, and possibly alternative that also decided at a time to also have some dance songs on their playlist and certain dance mix shows. Notice dance is moving more towards it's own stations, just like alternative and rock have their stations, hip hop and r&b have their stations, light rock and easy listening have their own stations, house and trance are beggining to move to be their own also and become independent like the others, and freestyle/breakbeat will be trance's and house's roomate for some time, just like heavy metal and punk will be rock's and alternative's roomate, sharing the same stations. So in other words, dance music seems to be the future in music. disco had it's chance. rock-n-roll had its chance. Pop had it's little fase helping r&b and hip hop to take over and kind of almost put them out of business or make those pop artists break up and convert to a more urban sound. Hip hop is at it's peak right now, so what's next? Latin hip hop? (Don't worry about reggae, because just like Ricky Martin opened up the doors for all those latin artists like Marc Anthony, Enrique Iglesias, Julio Iglesias,... etc and they all fell into the pop category because pop was taking over at that time, Sean Paul has opened the doors for reggae artists, but they are falling in the r&b/hip hop category.) I see dance coming up... (maybe you might say freestyle already had it's chance too, but it's hard to say what will happen here because dance might be coming up and freestyle is in the dance category... well made it will just turn into breakbeat kind of like how pop is continuously going towards r&b). I feel that dance could be the future, Kelis, Outkast, and many people like that are helping this to happen, and many of these hip hop artists are making breakbeat versions of their songs, but if it's country or jazz that takes over, then i'm sorry, I don't know how Carson Daly, the top 40 syndications, and top 40 stations will react counting down all those jazz hits - watch all those Jazz songs on 106 & park! The jazz stations will have major competition with the top 40 / rhythmic stations! (if this happens, come visit my site at
www.clubjazz.com in 2008)
Freestyle music could change it's name to stay alive, it's "dirty south" that's doing it for hip hop right about now!
