I think Nu Images cd was excellent as well as Bangin' the Beats cd. Changing the name to "Urban Dance", in my opinion will not really resolve the issue at hand. Djs and program directors will see through this. As much as I really love freestyle, the music production and writing has to improve and become more up to date. An evolution has to occur if it stands a chance to surface back to radio airplay. Quality productions like Nu Image is defintely the right direction to head in. Bottom line, if a song is really great, the club djs will play it and from there, radio will catch on. It seems sometimes the labels seem to try to really focus on radio air play only and not giving as much attention to the club dj. You can not forget how this all began. It started from the streets 1st and 2nd the radio which brought the wider audience.

Why does everyone fell that the Nu image cd is top quality 4 songs out of 25 is not a good percentage. The track listing is out of order the cd artwork looks like it was done on a home computer. cmon.

Mic Macs 2 cd set bangin beats disc one sounds like shizzle and i have to say I only like disc 2 mixed by mickey G and edited by dave Mendez.

Nu Image's cd is the best from any new generation/old school artist in a while. With all the crap that has come out over the last several years, it nice to be able to see freestyle put a quality produced cd together. Remember all those HOT production cds? Also how many "freestyle" artists now put cds that are not even freestyle but try to market it to us that way?

I really don't believe that the "urban dance" name wont fool too many people, and I say this because I've noticed some people do similar things to this...
It's kind of like Angelina and her remix to "just another day", the BASS remix. When I saw it in the store I was very curious to find out how the "bass remix" sounded only to find out it was not bass music at all, but strictly a freestyle/dance track. Most d.j.'s or program directors will listen to a song first before playing it, and I doubt that if a d.j. is going to do a bass/booty bass mix show and recieves a brand new record that has a bass remix, he will just try to mix it in just because it says "bass remix". Actually I have quite a few records that have remix names that make it sound like it will be urban or something other than what it really is but out mof all the stations I listen to I haven't heard anybody get fooled yet. Maybe the "urban dance" name will catch more people's attention and possibly make a very small difference in sales, but most people will look at the artists and songs to see if they know what they are, and these days it seems like people will only buy what's on the radio, mostly top 40 radio..., MTV's T.R.L., and what their friends say are cool. What people really should do is sneak in about two or three new freestyle songs on to the "NOW that's what I call music!" c.d.'s//------>>>(or maybe freestyle really isn't dead, it's just that it's been desquised under various names............................................)

I have seen various remixes with the name of "Breakbeat Mix", indepedent of the name freestyle will be called, the quality of the musics need to be better, if the music is good, the radios and the djs will play, we don't see that energy in the new musics that we saw in the Old School tracks.

Missing the Big Picture

I think that many of are not looking at it from a salesman point of view. Radio does not care if its freestyle or not but they are concern with label and distribution that is the main support factor for any published product. In reality the name is not being changed but in fact a new genre is being created. You will know freestyle track when you here because it will sound like a 1980s or early 1990s produced song and that what some artist want to do then its all good and they will forever be know as a freestyle artist which is ok if you just want to be popular on a local level and not interested in making some money or to show success in that business. Urban Dance is a an evolution of freestyle but in its own right will represent not a totally new sound but a more evolved sound that the industry can accept. There is a lot of things happening behind the scenes with major companies but it isn't an easy thing to explain but I will say is that freestyle is done in business sense but there has been strong support and interest in Urban Dance/Pop. For the fans that are posting and do not agree with the transition its ok that only shows how loyal you guys are and its really appreciated but try to keep an open mind and give it a chance because its one of the few opportunities new and old talents are going to have to get their stuff out their in a professional way other than paypal on a website. We deserve more than that, the fans deserve more than that. So please just give it a chance. It will have a difficult time succeeding unless the fans just open their minds and just give it a chance. We are hurting our own music by debating it. The artist for the most part agree with it, the industry is looking for it and trust me the fans will appreciate it.

Humbly,

The problem with good freestyle is the way it's promoted for one thing. If a good club dj get a hold of a track and spins it and plays it every week for a while , and the people the club like it, this will create a buzz and radio will have to listen to the fans. I have not heard country music changing it's name, so changing the name really won't do anything unless the product is good. When Rockell released "In a Dream" and "Can't We Try", that hit big, because the quality in the production and sound was there. Creat a great product and the fans are sure to follow.

This Is Crazy!! Is Freestyle the only music thats falling a part?!?! I mean Damn, Even Punk is still being played and rocked at the clubs. What is it with Freestyle??? Why Is it so hard?? Why Is Freestyle the only music thats breaking down like this?? Whare did we go Wrong?? People say It need to change, but Rap ,Rock , R&B, Regge, and contry still keep doing they thing. Why Doese Freestyle have to bend over backwards and Jump Through hoops for the Industry? What Is it With Freestyle?? Do we need to start a riot or a Million man march up in here? Why Do They be doin freestyle so damn dirty?

I think freestyle doesn't do as well as rap and other music because it really has true meaning and not about doing drugs, hoes, killing people, and being a gangster. Freestyle doesn't sing about any of those so it's not cool. Freestyle sings about love and relationships who want to listen to that?

R&B Gets away it, most rock and contry too, but yes image plays a major roll too. Thats why we need a video from the new school , get the youth involved again, you know what i mean? show todays life styles , todays fashion and style but groovin to freestyle.

EXACTYLY, ED!!!!

All other types of music that have been able to survive through the decades have had simple name changes (insert "FRANCIS" name here..........HIP HOP IS NOT ONLY A CULTURE BUT IT IS ALSO A GENRE)

But unfortunely, there are those of you that want to hold the advancement back and keep it in its infant stage......

So everyone is saying that freestyle should change the name to urban dance so they can begin to exist again? I agree that the music needs to change a bit and some of the sounds, but freestyle should always be freestyle.

Hellz Fkn Naw I dont agree to that !!!!! i feel the Same Way , The Shits Called Freestyle! Why Cause more confusion? We need to work on the real problemz that people keep looking over.

People have different definitons for this type of genre. Dance, latin hip hop, freestyle, hi energy, urban dance, I even hear people that don't know about freestye call it (TECHNO) :mad and etc... I call it Freestyle cause I feel comfortable with that name, but as far as for marketing a product from a label's point of view, I would use a name that stands out so that inquiring minds would get hooked on this type of genre and create a new fanbase. The huge thing that I see on alot of posts on the forums are that there are literally numerous different views where as one person think they are right about what freestyle is and how it should sound, and another has another opinion of another correct solution and the subject gets blown out of proportion. I think that this genre will never come into an agreement as far as what is should be called or how it should sound like. I personally think that this genre should be reconstructed not by the name nor the style, but by the respect it deserves!

Freestyle is not the only music that's dying, as a matter of fact it's just transformed into a new sound and been desquised under different names, just like hip hop would have thought to be dead now if it wasn't for much airplay because hip hop really has changed when timbaland and missy elliot got clever and creative and changed the sound and had everyone else - even pop and some alternative artists trying to copy and imitate their beats. (and this is one of the ways pop, r&b, and hip hop came more together, and since pop was big around the time these new 'futuristic' urban beats were made, it brought r&b and shortly after came this r&b with rap in it style that paved the way for hip hop now, (and notice that even today, most of the music on the charts now, on top 40 radio, and all over t.v. are r&b singing with rap in it, not the real hip hop that it used to be rapping about something that made sense) it's just a lot of thugs in love now). But my point about freestyle not being the music that's dying in a more clear example is this: booty bass music has died by far much faster than freestyle, and more people are willing to play a new freestyle/breakbeat song than a new booty bass song. Luka can't even make anymore compilations like the ones he had made. So so def bass allstars can't even do anything now except just produce hip hop and r&b remixes to hip hop and r&b songs, and you can remove the word "bass" from so so def now because that's over. 2step/garage albums and compilations? they just gave up and combined 2step music with breaks and drum & bass music, so I had to get "gotta get thru this" by Daniel Beddingfield & DND on a compilation with bass breaks & beats, which was full of breakbeat, drum & bass and 2step. The only booty bass albums you will find these days are old booty bass c.d.'s with old school artists, or new compilations full of old/classic booty bass songs. I think pop is kind of beginning to die - if it wasn't for Jessica Simpson and Jojo to come out and be successful. Britney Spears? I don't know what to call her stuff because she could have been in the r&b category but that "toxic" song just threw her right back to pop, or dance if you want to call it that since it is all over the dance charts. Freestyle will never die, and dance music will never die because it seems like dance music stations are popping up more than going away, and the stations where dance music is going away probably wasn't a dance station anyway, it was probably latin, hip hop, top 40, old school/jammin' r&b, and possibly alternative that also decided at a time to also have some dance songs on their playlist and certain dance mix shows. Notice dance is moving more towards it's own stations, just like alternative and rock have their stations, hip hop and r&b have their stations, light rock and easy listening have their own stations, house and trance are beggining to move to be their own also and become independent like the others, and freestyle/breakbeat will be trance's and house's roomate for some time, just like heavy metal and punk will be rock's and alternative's roomate, sharing the same stations. So in other words, dance music seems to be the future in music. disco had it's chance. rock-n-roll had its chance. Pop had it's little fase helping r&b and hip hop to take over and kind of almost put them out of business or make those pop artists break up and convert to a more urban sound. Hip hop is at it's peak right now, so what's next? Latin hip hop? (Don't worry about reggae, because just like Ricky Martin opened up the doors for all those latin artists like Marc Anthony, Enrique Iglesias, Julio Iglesias,... etc and they all fell into the pop category because pop was taking over at that time, Sean Paul has opened the doors for reggae artists, but they are falling in the r&b/hip hop category.) I see dance coming up... (maybe you might say freestyle already had it's chance too, but it's hard to say what will happen here because dance might be coming up and freestyle is in the dance category... well made it will just turn into breakbeat kind of like how pop is continuously going towards r&b). I feel that dance could be the future, Kelis, Outkast, and many people like that are helping this to happen, and many of these hip hop artists are making breakbeat versions of their songs, but if it's country or jazz that takes over, then i'm sorry, I don't know how Carson Daly, the top 40 syndications, and top 40 stations will react counting down all those jazz hits - watch all those Jazz songs on 106 & park! The jazz stations will have major competition with the top 40 / rhythmic stations! (if this happens, come visit my site at www.clubjazz.com in 2008)

Freestyle music could change it's name to stay alive, it's "dirty south" that's doing it for hip hop right about now!
