It was hard to breathe at first. My chest felt heavy, filling with the dry air of a tomb ages old. Me siento cansado de dormir en la oscuridad.

Forgive lord for coming back again. I had to.

I had to for her.

The smell of her hair, the touch of her skin. The way she smiled when I glanced her way. The chuckle of her laugh when I tickled her so. Lord above please forgive me for returning to the world of the living.

You see, I love her.

I love her so much that these chains of eternity cannot hold me.

Please. I could not turn away from her love. The way she spoke to me in her prayers.

For her, I had to awake again...................

New York City 2005

The streets have changed since the last time I came here. I feel out of place.

Vender: Hot dogs! Very fresh!

It is never a bore to be here. The last time I was here she was standing right in front of Radio City Music Hall. She was waiting for a friend.

1965.

"Hello."

"Hi."

"Nice night."

"Yes it is. The city always feels alive."

"My name is Diego. I am visiting from Europe."

"Mary. Pleasure to meet you. You come a long way. What brings you to New York."

" I have heard many things about this place. I desired to be a witness."

" You are well spoken. I heard men from Europe are like that. Where in Europe do you come from?"

"Espania. Barcelona."

"How long have you been away?"

" Well, (sigh) a very long time."

"Awww, I bet you miss home."

"Where are you from?"

"Well, I was born in Texas. Moved here 10 years ago."

"What brought you here? If I may ask of course."

"Love. My boyfriend moved here and I followed. He left me for another woman 3 years later."

" I am sorry to hear that. We men are wretched things at times. Unable to appreciate the warm embrace of love. I am certain your love was a treasure."

"My, my Diego. You sure have a way with the ladies."

"No bonita. It is just that you're smile has a way with me. May I buy you a drink to ease your time. "

" I really shouldn't. My friend will be here anytime soon. I promised her we would see a movie."

" Ah. I true lady indeed. I understand. I bid you farewell."

As I turned around she quickly sprang before me.

"Wait. That wasn't a rejection Diego. I'm not very good at this. Maybe you and I can go for a coffee. I know this great cafe downtown. Tomorrow night, 8pm?"

"I will be looking foward to it. Adios senorita."

Union Square. The moon was beautiful. So was Mary.

"Hi Diego. I'm sorry I'm late. The train was delayed."

"Please, sit. It is okay. How was your day?"

" Good. I was shopping at Macy's and brought me these cute pair of shoes. I can't wait to wear them."

"I am sure they will look great on you."

"I hope so. They cost me $20.00 and I am not a rich lady."

" I understand. However, you are extremely rich in beauty."

" Are you spoken for Diego?"

" No. I travel often. It is difficult at times."

"I'm surprised. A man like you is hard to find. Most guys around here can't even spell half of the words in your vocabulary."

" It's a beautiful moon tonight. Reminds me of the moons of years past in Spain. You could see the stars as of they were at arms length."

"That sounds so beautiful. Back home in Victoria I used to sit outside on the porch with my sister. We would wait all night hoping to see a falling star. I wanted to make a wish. We were 16 years old and naive."

" What was you're wish Mary?"

" My father was a constant tobacco chewer. He has chaw in his mouth since he was a boy. One day he found a lump in his mouth. He dismissed it as nothing. Until one night he fell ill and we had to take him into town to the hospital. The Doctors there said he had developed cancer and may die. My wish was for my daddy to get better and live forever."

"What happened?"

" (sigh) My star never came. Dad died 6 months later. We buried him in a spot on the farm with his can of chew."

" I am sorry to hear that."

" I just pray that Daddy is doing fine in heaven. You a religious man Diego?"

" I have my own views on religion. My own views on everlasting life. But if you are asking me if I believe in God then your answer is yes. Although my conversations with god are very different these days. Let us escape for a moment. The moon is beautiful, let us enjoy it. Come, I know a place where we can sit and talk."

"Lead the way. Right about now I feel I can follow you anywhere."

"Then come. Let us talk about dreams."
