Growing Concern Over NYC Subway Terror Threat

(New York-WABC, September 9, 2003) — Officials want you to stay alert. They say there is a new terror plot out there and they say it is aimed at our subway system. As we approach the two-year anniversary of 9-11, there is growing concern over another terrorist threat aimed again at New York City.

U.S. officials say they have picked up an increase in chatter recently about a terror plot. They say this plot involves the possibility of using poison gas or a chemical attack in our subway system.
U.S. intelligence says terrorists may be plotting and they may be eyeing another New York City target which is the subway system. Senator Charles Schumer voiced his concern over the alleged threat in Times Square on Monday.
Charles Schumer (D), NY Senator: "A supposed member of Al Qaeda is Saudi Arabia said that organization was preparing massive attacks on our subways. Yet the Saudi government is thwarting an effort of our intelligence authorities to find out any details of what Al Qaeda might be planning for our subways."
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly says the threat of a subway attack has been around for while and that it's still being taken very seriously. Kelly says NYPD officers are prepared.
Ray Kelly, NYPD Police Commissioner: "We have a variety of tactics and means that we use. You will see a lot of officers at a particular station at some times and then move. We call it our surge approach"
Officials want to talk to a Saudi suspect. They say he is a prisoner over there. They want to know how far in advance this terror plot is and if the suspect has any U.S. associates.
