Soundscan is the method in which retail sales of an album are measured on a national basis.....What the result of Soundscan is is what you see on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart. Each time a unit is sold at a record store it is "scanned", and at the end of a sales week, the numbers are tallied and that is how placement is determined. If you want to look at how Soundscan is working this week: Britney's new album scanned/sold about 760,000 copies in one week, giving it the #1 spot on the album charts. Pretty impressive, however, compare that to the 1.4 million units sold in the first week sales of her last album, released in June of 2000. Michael Jackson, who had the #1 spot last week, selling I believe (I could be wrong) 400,000 copies, drops to #3 this week. Again, not bad, but thats after 40% decrease in sales. It looks as if the King of Pop is really, in fact, OVER. Thank God. Anybody who celebrates himself as much as he does when he hasn't had a hit album in over a decade really needs to get over himself. That, my dear friends, in Soundscan.
