K, I'm gonna say this one more time. Hopefully more people will read it this time. I'm not knocking Tony Monaco down. I respect him for what he's doing. I congradulate him on his work. I just thought his show could be even better and I wanted to see if I was the only one who noticed this. So Jade, you can stop getting pissed off. Tony Monaco is a great guy, I agree. He's done a lot for freestyle, I agree! The freestyle frenzy show is great, once again, I agree. I'm just saying that there's room for improvement.

By the way, I've already said to my ex: "yo, stop ragging all the time". She didn't respond with A or B, she just stopped getting pissed the first couple times, then she kindly told me to stop saying that 🙂

Ok, for the last time.....

I am not being bitchy. SOmeone in here has been posting comments on my posts and has personally not done very much for me to like them, nor to be on my good side. So yes, I got a little peeved, and yes I responded to them. I didn't say you knocked Tony, I just said that he can only do so much with an hour. ANd with the media business the way it is, without more time to be able to expand his playlist he really can't move away too much from the requests he gets. I never saisd there wasn't room for improvement, I just said in order for that to happen Tony needs more room to do it in. A one hour time slot is simply not enough time.

Jade!!!!!!

You're over reacting, just calm down. We all get what you're trying to say, and these are just suggestions, do get all defensive, you're making youself look like such a b$@*%. Its not worth it, you're just snapping at everyone, when you have no reason to be, no one's directing anything at you, just relax!!!

Now please don't react to this by shooting your mouth off.
Thanks in advance, we're on the same side, don't need to get defensive.

I AM a bitch! Deal with it! I was not referring to you nor was I getting defensive. The majority of my comments were directed to one person who has just gotten off on the wrong foot with me and not just in this thread. In any case, I understand that these are just suggestions and if you read all my comments you will see that I made a few of my own. Additionally, due to the lack of rich text and audio, it is very difficult to discern tone from one's postings. The way postings are right now, it is difficult to ascertain whether I am angry or calm from my posting and people are basically making assumptions. I don't get angry over stupid postings but I do get annoyed with gender biased stereotypes. Now, if there is no one else who would like to make a comment, I think the subject has been long beaten to death. Drop it and move on.

I sure wouldn't wanna get in your way =P
Sorry if I got you pissed with this topic, but I wanna thank you and everyone else for their replies. I got a good idea of what people think of tony's show. It's gonna be helpful once I email him this week regarding the playlist. Again, thanks everyone... even Jade!! hehehe

EESH

Send him the link to this thread! That should be good for a few laughs!! ANd I wasn't angry about the topic, I just didn't like people getting too down on Tony because, let's face it, no one else is playing freestyle for us on the air. So why knock the guy when he's doing for us what no one else is. I'm not saying don't criticize. Just make sure it's constructive criticism, is all.

Tony Monaco - The King

Lets face it. If it wasn't for Tony Monaco, you wouldn't even know that freestyle existed in Canada. The fact is, the freestyle industry has done an extremly poor job at promoting itself. Maybe its a lack of money, or commitment from the people at the major record labels, or maybe there is a lack of talent. Don't get me wrong, I love freestyle, but a lot of the stuff that is coming out is pure crap and its hard for Tony Monaco to push a lot of newer tunes. You could probably list the number of good freestyle songs that have come out in the last two years on your two hands.

Freestyle needs to change in order for the playlists to be updated. YOu must alos understand that the Toronto scene is a lot different than the Miami scene.

monaco strikes back!!!!!

Holy jumpin' is this the stuff I miss when I don't go on this site. You guys are on fire!!! I've always said "it's tough to tell from day to day what runs through people's minds, it's tough to tell whether people are with you or against you but the only thing we can agree on as humans is to disagree." It's so nice just to hear people talking about freestyle but easy on the bashing. Thanks to Jade and Julianna for coming to my rescue. My entire career spanning 13 years on air as of this week and 15 years in the radio biz, I've received plenty of props and praise and plenty of knocks and dissing. I wish I had as much power as people think I do. I am just one man fighting an on-going battle. I have restrictions and rules I must follow. We must play 35 percent canadain content which means 5 out of every 13 songs must be canadian. Thank goodness for Tiamo and Intense records for such great vocals and productions because without them the frenzy would be in jeapardy. Radio is for the masses and I'm greatful that the programming department allows me to play freestyle for just 1 hour every week. With all the changes taking place in radio the day will come that the show will get it's pink slip. Nobody in radio or the music industry respects freestyle. It's such a non-factor that most stations don't even know the definition of freestyle. Try calling another station and see what reaction you get. Over 5000 people went to the freestyle rush not because of me or Hammer or Hollywood or Big Show or Tamara or Impulse or Emanuel or Maurizio. They are all my friends but 5000 plus people went to the RUSH because of Stevie B. He is the leader of our cult our passion our musical relegion. I just recently went 2 weeks without playing Stevie as a trial and a test and my emails and phones were off the hook. People blasted me for not playing Stevie. They expect it and demand it! Stevie is the biggest name we have in this musical genre. If you don't like him that's fine but remember millions do. You might not like Jlo or Britney or BSB but they have legions have fans and big-time record sales and deserve respect. As far as playing rare tracks or an attempt to diversify the playlist with 1 hour a week that's just not possible. I want canadains to go to the corner of Yonge and Dundas and ask somebody if they know Nyasia or Eileen Flores or C-Bank or for that matter even George Lamond and I guarantee people will look at you and say who??? My goal is to please hardcore fans with the best possible freestyle and also turn on new listeners. Remember radio is a business and it's all about ratings and making money not about playing an obscure song with great production and bad vocals and playing it just for the sake of playing it. Cross-over hits and mixes are important too. Everyweek younger listeners call me up and ask me what freestyle is. Although I program for 18-34 year olds I'm always looking to usher in new listeners. In response to the gentleman that said I'm pre-recorded and don't take calls that's not true. 3 out of 4 weeks I'm live and taking requests. Some weeks I'm burnt out because of my heavy work load, some weeks I work for the Toronto ThunderHawks and some weeks I just want to spend some quality time with my wife. On many occasions I've invited listeners to the station especially those that don't believe that I get non-stop requests for Stevie, Rockell, Lil Suzy and Elissa and Collage. I invite anyone to hang in the studio and check out the insane action. As freestyle fans we should work together not against each other. I don't hear people bashing each other in the house music scene. Also when making a comment don't just guess, know your stuff and be educated don't just assume something because you heard it from a friend who it from friend and so on. If you have a comment or a question or a demo tape email me and I'll get back to you as soon as possible because I respond to every intelligent email at monaco@z1035.com Take care freestyle fans and tune in every sunday from 5-6pm for the one and only freestyle frenzy on the new Z103dot5 Toronto!!!!!

To Tony Monaco

Hey man, no one was bashing you. Everyone that replied to this post said almost every time that we respect you for what you're doing for the freestyle community. No one was hating on anyone. I wasn't even bashing your show. I was simply saying that there was room for improvement. I said diversify the list, you said you can't cuz of lack of time and requests. It's all good, but I thought it was worth mentioning anyway. And as for BSB, 'JLO', N'Sync and the rest of them, I wasn't disrespecting them either. I just thought that, since 103.5 already plays them throughout the day, they should be left out of the freestyle frenzy.

One thing that would be interesting though is having a poll or something during the freestyle frenzy, just for one show, asking people to call in and name a title from an old school artist or something. It would show just how much your listners know about freestyle. Again, this just a thought! NO DISRESPECCCCTTT!!! 😉

Take it eeeeassyyyyyy buddy, later!

FreestyleFreak,

You got a point bro. It's too bad nobody else realizes it. Maybe (just maybe) freestyle would come back if the public was introduced to a wider variety of freestyle songs. But we'll never know I guess.

Keep in pumping, tony

The freestyle that Tony plays for the freestyle frenzy is what the crowd wants to hear.....it's for the younger generation of gino's and gina's. We the older crowd search for the old tunes and rare tracks that sometimes the younger kids don't bother with....I love to find an old tune or a fresh freestyle track. I noticed that if he plays something new, the listeners call in and ask about that certain track, and where to find it. I want him to play an old freestyle track once and awhile, but his time is limited. Anyway, i just wanted to thank you again for keeping freestyle alive in Toronto, from your friend, "lil" tony d.

FreestylePlanet,

What do you concider 'the old crowd'? I'm 17, I can't even get beer yet. So I guess you're not concidering me part of the older crowd. Same goes with all my friends who are into freestyle. And what if he did play a rare track that no one knew, but it was old school. What makes you think those same people wouldn't call in and ask for the name?? How will they know right off the bat that it's old school anyway!?

It's not good to forget about the past. You gotta come back to your roots sometimes.

Great post FreestyleFreak, I feel your pain. Franco
respond to tonys post I would like to here your opinion.

If anybody can remember Bernie Rosenberg had the best Freestyle show on Power 88.5,and Bernie and Elvis tried with
Freestyle Sundays at Mistys by the airport ok it didnt work
out but they had the best selection of Freestyle music

Listen tony is doing something that no one else is and that is why he gets my respect, but i agree with you guys if he were to play something "old school" every so often the freestyle freaks like us would give him a bigger audience to listen to his show, and it's not the older crowd, i'm 19 i LOVE FREESTYLe and can't get enought of it. I like what it does to people just look at there faces when they hear a old school track or even a new track in a club their faces light up. Freestyle needs a bigger push and more people will listen if the play list is diversified. Tony take some pointers from these posts and the show will be around for a long time to come. and with the right steps the younger crowds will love freestyle like we do and it will make a huge come back but not the way he's going about it it's the right step but it needs more then stevie b everyweek!

EL DUCE has a comment

Hey peoples... El Duce asked me to post this for him because he wasn't able to..so here it is...

I have been reading on the topic of "Freestyle Frenzy" on clubfreestyle.com
and Tony finally replied. The one thing that no one has thought of is "IF
THE RADIO STATION DOES PLAY RARE OR BETTER SONGS, HOW CAN A LISTNER PURCHASE
THE SONG IF THE RECORD STORES DON'T CARRY THEM FOR SALE. THEN IF THEY DO
CARRY THEM THEY HAVE TO ORDER QUITE A BIT WHICH THEN WILL COST ABOUT $32.00
(INCLUDING TAX), WHICH NOT EVERY ONE IS GOING TO BUY (but I will)".

Now for my comments..

Guys,

It has started to get a little ugly in here and we all (myself included) just need to chill. I understand Tony's point. Radio IS a business. They get to charge the rates they do for advertising air time based on the number of people listening. The bigger the numbers the more expensive air time is. The man has less than an hour to spin freestyle. The show is an hour but some of that time is for commercials remember. Also, being a CANADIAN radio station, he has certain CRTC regulations that he has to adhere to, mainly the can-con. Can-con is Canadian Content. CRTC rules are that for every hour of music played, a certain number or percentage must be of Canadian content; whether that means that the singer is Canadian, or the producer, or the writer, or that the song is produced in Canada (I'm not 100% on this last one, if I'm wrong let me know) that song has to be played. Given that there are like 3 Canadian Freestyle artists right now you're going to end up hearing Elissa, Joee, Luca, or Rockell like every show. Until more singers step up, that's how it is. It's not Tony's choice, it's the LAW.

As for Johnny Budz being able to play those rare songs, has anyone ever taken a look at the requests other people make? Take look and see how often Johnny says he won't play that song because Judy Torres plays it between 9-11pm. He doesn't say it to be mean, but with Judy playing those songs it frees the Budz-man to play some of the rarer, vintage stuff. If you don't believe me ask him. If it wasn't for Judy and those 2 hours she spins before him, Johnny's show would probably sound a lot more like Tony's save for the Can-Con. If you don't believe me, ask him. In fact, here, I will.

JOHNNY, PLEASE COMMENT ON THIS POST!

And Tony, since you're probably reading this, please comment on this next point. I said it earlier, and I'll say it again, if Tony had more than one hour to spin, we would get more variety in the Freestye he plays. He could cater to more requests for rare, old school, or fresh unheard songs. But, for those of you not listening to his show, if he doesn't have the numbers to support it, he can't go and ask for another hour. If we're not listening, to the one hour we get, why would they think we'll listen if they give us two? If Tony's listenership were to start to rise and the numbers increase then we would have given him something solid to back up a request for more time. He can say, "Look guys. PEOPLE ARE LISTENING to my show. LOOK AT THESE NUMBERS and they're only growing! Give me another hour and watch how much more those numbers will grow." How could they refuse him then? But if the numbers are dying, what'll happen is that Tony will get called into the office and told that "Due to a lack of numbers and poor listenership we are going to have to cancel the freestyle frenzy and go with a more SUCCESSFUL top-40 format". And then you guys can bitch and moan about how there is NO freestyle on the air anymore except at like 3am, and really, who's listening then?
Besides, if people keep knocking Tony, why the hell would he even WANT to do another hour? I personally wouldn't want to bust my ass and work to do something nice for people who are either ungrateful or unsupportive or over critical or all of the above, which would take me away from my new wife and my own personal life. Would you? Not all of you are like that 100%, but we all have some of that in each of us.
So give the guy a break, and let's see what we need to do to get what we want.
Tony, (if you can say without breaking rules) what are numbers like now and what would they need to be in order to get a 2 hour frenzy? Would that not help diversify your play list? And would you be willing to do a 2 hour show if we could get those numbers?

That's my $5 worth.

ok jade makes a good argument and the only way to make the show longer or more diverse more people have to talk to the programming department cause ultimatley they are the ones that decide not tony, just read the other post i made and read tony's comments. here is just a quote from the man himself

"what you need to do is get thousands and thousands of people because hundreds just won't do is to get out there and write management and tell them you want more freestyle in primetime and a longer show. That would get results!!!!"

so we should stop bitching at him, it's not his fault at least he is doing something and bring it to the programming and managment and see what they say.
