Well... I was just telephoned by Rhoq at approximately 1030pm, Philadelphia time, to inform me of some very interesting but yet expected news. For the past five years the concept of Freestyle has emerged to become one of the largest dance music mediums to be covered on the Internet. In the beginning we had the indoctrination of "Freestyle By Primax," the first web site on record to have bestowed the concept of Club Music (Freestyle) onto the world wide web. Next we had "Orimoto’s Freestyle," a web site hosted from the University of Hawaii which also provided some minute information about the concept of Freestyle Dance Music, including the world renowned formula, FREESTYLE MUSIC=LATIN HIP HOP + HEART THROB + FUNKY MELODY. The next website to emerge onto the WWW was "John Ferrari’s Freestyle," which was known for its brief video clip of the Little Suzy "Take Me In Your Arms" video, but for some odd and strange reason the video never would play when I clicked the hyperlink. Through some strange force brought about by the angels up above the first ever communication medium materialized exclusively for fans of our beloved music, "The Rare Grove Bulletin Board." It was on this system where a small minority joined together to discuss this great music called Freestyle. Personally, I first stumbled upon this medium during the latter part of 1995/early 1996, back then I was in High School and had been experiencing a lot of problems relative to ‘teenage heartache.’ To make a long story short, the ten or thirteen of us became online ‘buddies’ and maintained a semblance of RESPECT and HONOR whenever communicating with one another. The concept of FLAMING AND CURSING hardly existed on this medium, postings were generally short in length and consisted of a ‘jam of the day.’ During the middle half of 1996 "RummyG’s Freestyle Club Music Page" emerged, with an initial purpose of providing information relative to the Philadelphia Freestyle Scene to a specific target audience, the freestyle fan. Eventually I came across two natives of Philadelphia (I’m from the Southern Suburbs originally) who educated and provided me with extensive resources about this music, including insider information about the forgotten SOUTH PHILLY FREESTYLE Era established by South Philadelphia’s Own Jerry Tripodi, Greg Ferry, and other’s during the early 1990’s. From this moment the Philadelphia Freestyle Connection emerged as a ‘social’ group and a fan club aimed at preserving this great genre. Okay, well, I don’t want to come off as someone who’s done anything significant for this music since the truth is I’ve only been a supporter, a former web site administrator, and a member of a group which once aimed at releasing a freestyle single. The truth of the matter is I believe that RummyG has a lot to be appreciative for, to the people he came across in his travels as a member of the Freestyle Nation, prior to his blacklisting. I would not be the person I am TODAY in the Offline world had it not been for Freestyle Music and for the Freestyle Nation. I could tell you times when I would ‘cut’ school just so I could stay in C-Ire’s Chat room all day talking to my friends about the music and BS’ing about random topics. There were times when I would get together with some fellow Freestyle Nation members and head over to gentleman clubs in New Jersey for the sole purpose of ‘hearing’ Viper Freestyle, or the like, playing in the background as we saw hot G-Stringed Divas dance the night away and fulfill our wildest desires. Memories my friends.... Never forget them because without a frame of reference or a concept of memory ‘yer good for nuttin’ as we say here in Philly. I will always value the good times experienced during my surfing on the Freestyle Nation and will never forget the ‘offline’ encounters I had with many of its members. I must defend myself, however, for at one time I was accused of being the ‘Anti-Christ’ of the Freestyle Nation. Yes, indeed I made some premature business decisions while involved with a local venture here in Philly, and in retrospect I suppose it wasn’t the ‘right’ thing to do. In addition, I was falsely accused of being a poster by the nickname of "The Critic," who posted derogatory messages to various members of the Freestyle Nation and accusing certain women of being good for nothing welfare mothers. To this day I stand in my defense and proclaim My Innocence in being involved with such filthy thoughts. Nevertheless, I have since grown into a man and am able to take blame for whatever pain my actions caused onto people. I am saddened that Adam Lewis decided to pull the plug, but at the same time I do feel that an evolution has already taken place. Yes folks, you’re standing right in the evolutionary structure of Freestyle as we know it on the Internet. What once started as group of ten individuals ranging from the ages of 17 through 35 has now turned into a conglomerate of minds representing all ethnic and religious backgrounds. . . God bless you all regardless of what you may feel deep inside towards me or any of my ‘Friends.’ I wish you the best of luck in all your endeavors and pray the gods up above shine you all with success and happiness. Now, for the final shout out from RummyG: To Adam "Lost Love" Lewis, thank you for keeping the board alive for all of these years, I’m sorry I had to depart the medium three and a half years back due to some friction. Dez, congratz on your engagement and best of luck. Roberto Garcia, thanks for sending me weekly Airborne Express shipments of your Shows. Primax, thanks for starting all of this. DJ Fierce, thanks for being there for me. Rhoq, thanks for exposing me to Pablo Toto and Coronas! Ramini from California, not sure what happened to you. Scott_T, hope things are working out well. Hiram Ortiz, I haven’t forgotten about you.

As we always used to say, "Peace and Keep the Style Alive."

April 27, 2001 a/k/a the day the Freestyle Nation said farewell...

I was at school the first time I had visited the Freestyle Nation. Just like many others, I was a Freestyle fan alone in a non-Freestyle world. A fan who was searching for people that I could identify with and share the common bond of Freestyle music.

We can begin in August of 1996. I had conducted an on-line search for "Freestyle Music". Almost immediately I found the Freestyle Nation Bulletin Board. For months I would read all of the latest happenings, too shy to actually post a message of my own. In November of 1996 I decided to take a chance and post my first message on the Nation BBD. It was also at this time that I decided to enter C-Ire's Freestyle Chat Room. While in C-Ire's chat, I first met DJ Dez - a Nation BBD regular. As time went on I soon became acquainted with all of the other Freestyle Nation regulars at that time through the BBD and Chat Room. People like Rummy G., DJ Fierce (a/k/a DJ Fate), CrazyArm (Armando), DJ Muevelo, Maria, Lee, Malika, Kat, Milly, Roberto and Primax (If I have forgotten anyone I apologize)...

A few months later (March 1997) I met up with DJ Dez at a local Philly record shop - The Record Bar. Dez was of course a founding member of the Philly Freestyle Connection (The PFC) along with Rummy G. & DJ Fierce. Prior to our meeting I had been familiar with the Philly Freestyle Connection Newsletter that was available at the Record Bar.

Dez and I had met with the intention of maybe one day being able to record a Freestyle record of our own. It was during this initial meeting that Dez gave me Rummy G.'s phone number and said that he had mentioned speaking with me in C-Ire's chat. Apparently Rummy G. was interested in talking with me about Freestyle so a few days later I gave him a call.

During our conversation, Rummy gave me another phone number. This number was for DJ Fierce another member of Dez & Rummy's PFC. Over the course of the following weeks I was able to speak with Rummy & Fierce on few occasions.

About a month or so (May 1997) after meeting with Dez, I had the opportunity to meet with Rummy G., again at the Record Bar. I remember Rummy once told that his initial impression of me was a bit fearful. For those who know what I look like, I am a big guy and keep a shaved head. Rummy said that the first time he met me he thought I was a skin head until he realized that a skin head wouldn't be listening to Freestyle music, lol.

In early June, some of the Freestyle Nation regulars had a trip to Atlantic City, NJ. This particular trip was the 2nd of many such Freestyle Nation gatherings in AC. I remember speaking with Dez, Rummy & Fierce in C-Ire's Chat Room earlier that day. Originally we (Rummy, Fierce and myself) had hoped to make the trip down to AC with Dez, but our schedules didn't permit that. Instead we decided to meet later that night at a restaurant called Bennigans. This is a night that the 3 of will remember for a long time to come.

I guess it was about 9 PM when DJ Fierce & Rummy G. arrived. I had been there for a few minutes already, accompanied by my girlfriend at that time. This was the first time that I was meeting DJ Fierce. The 4 of us went inside and had some dinner. I happened to have a few draft Heinekens. At that time they served quart (32 oz) sized glasses, not the 16 oz pints they have now. DJ Fierce didn't drink at that time and Rummy G. wasn't of legal drinking age. As I continued to imbibe the sweet sweet nectar we began to discuss the trip to AC and expressed our disappointment that we weren't able to go. I suggested that we go anyway. At first DJ Fierce and Rummy G. thought I was joking until I made it clear that I was being serious. The agreed that it would be a fun experience and our journey began.

We stopped at my place to pick up some Freestyle tapes for the road trip. At approximately 11 PM that night we were on our way to Atlantic City.

We arrived in AC around 1 AM and circled around the city looking for some place to park. Upon our arrival we attempted to page DJ Dez, but unfortunately he wasn't able to respond. We found a parking lot adjacent to Club Deja-Vu...DJ Fierce went into Club Deja-Vu, as this was supposed to be one of the Freestyle Nation rendezvous points. Rummy G. waited near the club and me and my girl stayed with the car. Inside the club, Fierce met-up with Nation regular Kat, who we would meet up with later that morning.

Next we headed over to Bally's Hotel & casino. Many of the Freestyle Nation people were staying there for the weekend. Since this was my first time in AC, I headed over to the floor to try my luck on some of the slot machines. Rummy & Fierce attempted to locate some of the Freestyle Nation members. They were able to find out which room Dez, Lee and a few others were staying in and called them using the house phone. They called up to the room Dez and others were staying in… They were tired from partying and such but Lee came downstairs to greet us and bring us to the room to relax for a while. Dez, Lee, Muevelo & Maria were there (although Meuv & Maria were asleep)...It was already 3 or 4 AM by time and our presence was preventing Dez & Lee from getting their rest and what not. We left around 5:30/6 AM and took whatever beer they had with us, (about 8 cans of Coors Light - we stuffed all of our pockets with them), lol. We took a little walk along the boardwalk as the sun was just beginning to rise over the ocean and we happened to meet up with Kat along the way who was a bit exhausted after drinking and clubbin' all night long. I am not sure where (which Hotel) we went to afterwards - we basically were following Kat's lead. We met with J-Cruz (Jeff Cruz, co-producer of Olga Rivera's "LOOKING THROUGH MY WINDOW") and Nation member Milly. We stayed for a few minutes to chat for a but before we decided around 7 AM that it was time we hit the road for our trek back to Philly.

At this point we were all tired from our little adventure. We rolled into Philly just around 9 AM a bit drained but yet full of energy. DJ Fierce & Rummy G. welcomed me into their brotherhood known as the PFC and I officially became their 4th member. After that night in Atlantic City, Rummy, Fierce and myself have been close like brothers spending a lot of great moments together.

Soon after the trip to AC - Rummy decided to change "Rummy G.'s Freestyle Website" to the official PFC website. We attempted to create an on-line newsletter that was updated as often as possible (daily when possible). We would use the site to document any sort of Freestyle related occurrences (as trivial as hearing Freestyle coming from a passing car to hanging out and listening to Freestyle). It was here that I also began writing Freestyle Reviews (June 1997).

Now - my first reviews weren't accepted with open arms as some of the opinions I had expressed were taken very seriously. If anyone remembers the ordeal between Willie V. and myself you know what I am referring to. After receiving messages from Willie about what I had written, I gave him a call and we discussed and resolved the issue like adults. Which brings me to...

The next major event was in July - Tazmania Records Summer Concert 1997. Myke & Andrea of Intrepid drove all the way down from Rochester NY. They met up with Rummy upon their arrival in Philly. They had lunch at the Philly Rock Café and then met me at my job. Next we went to Fierce's house and together the 5 of us began our short trip to the Iguana/Milk Bar NightClub in Cherry Hill, NJ. We had the opportunity to hang-out with some of the artists prior to the concert. We also met up with Primax, Smokey and a few others.

Willie V. was there and I walked over to him, introduced myself and extended my hand. He was very receptive and sincere to my gesture. Willie and I have not had problems between us since (or at least none that I know of) and even had the opportunity to hang-out together at that show. Unfortunately, Henry "Rascal" Vargas (then of On-2) and Raymond "Ray Raw" Marrero were unaware that Willie and I had settled our differences and grabbed me from behind while threatening to do bodily harm for "dissing" the Artistik family (up until this moment I thought Freestyle was all about love & peace)!!! I told Willie what had happened and he spoke with his associates and told them to leave me alone as they were unaware that Willie and I had already made amends.

It was around this time that things began to change within the Freestyle Nation structure. As the Nation began to grow with more and more members it seemed to have peeked somewhere in final quarter of 1997. C-Ire's Freestyle Chat Room disappeared and we were briefly re-directed to the StreetSound Chat Room before finding a new home and hanging out at Laroo's Freestyle Joint (eventually becoming the Freestyle Nation Chat Room)...

In September of 1997, All 4 members of the PFC were able to get together at DJ Fierce's house to record the now infamous PHILLY FREESTYLE CLASSICS compilation tape. Originally this project was the concept of Dez & Fierce as they compiled the compilation and planned it our months before. Rummy & I were glad to be a part of the project. Unfortunately, this would be the last time that Rummy, Fierce & myself would work with Dez as a unit. No one is really to blame - Dez has a successful career and often just doesn't have the time available like he once had.

In October of 1997 Rummy & I had one last venture with DJ Dez as a member of Steve "Mr. Miami" O'Neil's project, then known as "The Alliance". The ultimate goal was to host Freestyle concerts at the Warehouse NightClub in Philly, hoping to bring Freestyle back to the "City of Brotherly Love". Unfortunately the experience didn't bring forth the public reaction as we had hoped for and it ended after only a few weeks.

On December 29, 1997 - Tazmania held their Winter Spectacular concert. It seems that in the weeks that followed things over at the Freestyle Nation took a turn for the worse. A few individuals began posting negative comments and made some uncalled for personal attacks on some of the Nation regular. This sort activity is what prompted Adam Lewis to add the security feature of the log-in and password in order to post on the Freestyle Nation BBD.

Rummy G. who has always been vocal was wrongly accused as being the perpetrator known as "The Critic". This unknown individual posted some very nasty things about a few individuals on the Nation BBD. Rummy made the conscious decision to leave the very place he once considered home since he was now made out to be an outcast. Fierce & I left as well as a show of support for our PFC brother.

About a year and a half later (December 1999) I returned to the Nation hoping that things were well. For the most part everything was, but I had noticed that a lot of the content had changed. No longer was it just Freestyle...As things progressed, it seems that the Nation continued it's downward spiral. Club Freestyle appeared in the Spring of 2000. Jack G & Johnny Budz offered a very nice alternative to the aging Freestyle Nation BBD. I quickly moved in and took residence. I am now proud to call Club Freestyle my home.

It seems that the overall condition of the Freestyle Nation deteriorated very quickly once Club Freestyle established itself as the best place on the internet for Freestyle news and information. I had stopped into the Nation a few times over the past year to express my concerns of the Nation losing it's edge. Unfortunately my cries either fell on deaf ears or were just met with sheer ignorance by a few of it's members who I guess felt they were defending the Nation by dismissing my posts.

Recent developments over on the Nation with continuos fighting among the members and non-stop drama helped Adam make his decision that much clear - to declare this day as the day the Nation said goodbye.

Although, it may be a little overdue, it is still sad to see an institution and trendsetter meet it's end in this capacity.

Interesting Retrospective

Rummy G & Rhoq,

That was a very interesting retrospective in regards to the the Freestyle Nation BB and other related topics. It is nice to have the both of you posting in this forum.

- Fernando Benitez from San Diego, CA -

P.S. If and when we ever meet, in person, that is, the first round of Coronas--and lap dances--will be on me. *LOL*

ahhhh the freestyle nation...where to start??? there are a lot of things that i loved about the bb, but also a lot of bs'ing going on...i dont know...it just seems like it took me a while to feel at home there, but when i came here it was instant!!!! to me it just seemed like all everyone ever did was give shout outs or talk about how times use to be...everybody wanted the bb to go back to where it was...i always hated when i heard this...everybody wanted the mood to be so sweet...but it wasnt...opinions had to follow the mainstream or u would really get it...but thats the bad...the good is going into the chat and seeing some of ur girls in there and gossiping ur asses off like old ladies...or reading one of the funny ass posts people would leave...there were also the political religious and freestyle debates we had...oh the hours talking about george lamond!!!! at first i was mad to see what happened. but now i know it was for the best...its like putting ur 15 yr old dog who cant walk see, hear, smell eat to sleep...its heart wrenching but u know u have to do it!!!!

ps to rummy g...u know what the first freestyle site i ever saw was???? rummg's philly freestyle connection!!! i remember it had the pic of u wearing blue, or the back ground was blue...but yup u hooked me up!!! i was so excited to find a site dedicated to my music...u really represented then!!!!

hey i want to be there when u guys get together!!! but lapdances????? only if its someone resembling a certain person..........ok i am babling, but its 3.30am

Interestingly enough, the Freestyle Nation Bulletin Board is also where I first discovered freestyle on the web and found out that I wasn't the only freestyle freak in the world, that I was one of many!! Although I did post from time to time, I was never a board "regular", considering I must have been about 15-16 at the time, everyone seemed so much older and over my head, and rightfully so. I remember I used to post right before the time that Adam implemented the use of a password, and I used to post some time after that too. I don't even remember what name I went under, maybe just James or something, definately not "James Anthony", for that was before I discovered how cool it was to use my middle name for something lol.....Anyways, its kinda sad to see it go. I guess you could say that I was a semi-quiet observer. I never met Rhoq or Rummy or anybody from that board (actually would have if I made it to Poor Billy's a little while back), but it just reminds me of how much older I've gotten over these past years...I mean here I am now some 5 years later meeting and hanging out with so many great people, winning freestyle DJ battles 🙂, and just having the opportunity to share the music I love with others who love it as well. I'll be sad to see it go, but as Rhoq said, things evolve, and here we are now.....

Fernando!!! There is nothing like an ice cold corona with a wedge of lime, especially when someone else is covering the tab, lol...

Although, I have accompanied my brothers in the PFC to *eh hem* "Gentlemen's Clubs" on a few occasions, I know they are not really my thing. Don't get me wrong I love women very much, but strip clubs make me feel like I am making a woman degrade herself for my money...

Now, I would definitely go with you guys - but I will pass on the lap dance. Rummy G can have mine, lol. I would spend my time trying to make Toni feel comfortable in that enviornment and discuss "Freestyle" (a/k/a try to get my mack on, lol) with her as we knock off a couple of coronas...

James, I believe it was Rummy who was speaking about CF being the evolution of Freestyle. He is absolutely correct - The Nation really hadn't evolved much since 1996, while CF is constantly changing and catering to the Freestyle community's needs...

It would have been nice to meet you at Poor Billy's that night. I am sorry that you hadall of that trouble trying to get in, bro.

hey jack, now u rule!!!!! u had the torch passed on to u!!!! i know u will do the best job...well u already have done an out standing job!!! and all those hours u spend working on the this forum is very appreciated by all of us...just want to give u a shout out!!!!

You see, Jack...I TOLD 'YA, lol

I am really beginning to think that Toni is kind of like me, but in female form!!! We think so much alike.

hmmmm...so what are "we" thinking right now????? LOL 😉

FREESTYLE NATION R.I.P.

wow i cant believe it's gone! for me it started late 1996, i was in hollywood california visiting my x roomate and friend rave dj Keoki. he was showing me how to navigate through the internet cuz back then i didn't have a computer yet. well i did a search on freestyle and thats how i discovered the natiion! i couldn't believe all the support that there still was for this music. it was unbelievable! it was so amazed that there was soooo many freestyle freaks just like me. damn i think i read every single post that night. well i got hooked and went out and brought a computer ( believe it or not it was for freestyle! sick isnt it? lol) well early 1997 i became a member and part of the freestyle nation family. i made so many great friends through it, i'll never forget all the fun times i had up in there. especially all the drama, that was a blast! (*looks at maria*). i remember we all use to get excited when some of our favorite artist will post on the nation lol. we talked about it for weeks! although i never went to those early get togethers since i live in miami, i did get to meet, chill and drink with a lot of you at at special events like winter music conference 98-99,freestyle reunion show. i know i havent posted there in a while since discovering clubfreestyle.com but i will deeply miss the freestyle board. yo rhoq thanx for the freestyle memory tapes you sent me back in 98, i think there was like 8 of them, but i just remember it was you who hooked me up with them lol. mad luv 2 my dawg and one of my best friends that i met on the nation- reggie, maria, dan, lexxx,my little monkey alize, jorge, lee, franco, willie valentin, dez, gary, kat, kathy, aimee, benny, primax, adam, tito puente jr,rosa, haze, fernando, there are so many more i want to shout out but i cant right now cuz im late for work!! lol
MAD LUV 2 ALL
MARLON A.K.A. BBOY3000 (back then it was 2000)
😀

Yo Marlon

You are welcome!

I really hope you enjoyed the Freestyle Memories Compilations...Eventually that series made it to 14 or 15 volumes!!! That was my first compilation series project to carry some sort of theme. Most of the master tapes have since disappeared or have been recorded over...

You may actually be the only person aside from Rummy G & DJ Fate that still has copies of the "Freestyle Memories" tapes.

LOL, I remember back then all the Philly people used to rave about Q102...That station was the shit a few years back....When they were at their height, they far surpassed KTU in terms of freestyle in their regular daily programming (during the day, not like the sunday nights we have now).....Damn how things change.....

Sorry, this was supposed to be one post.......I remember back when I first discovered the nation, back in the spring of '97 or so, somehow the stereo in my room would pick up the signal from Q102 all the way in Staten Island...I was totally bugging out when I heard stuff like Denine & Collage "Love Of A Lifetime" on the radio for the first time ever....The freestyle nation also introduced me into the world of "new school (meaning post 1992) freestyle"

RIP FreestyleNation Board :O(

😕 I still don't understand WHY the board is being deleted by Adam. There's DRAMA everywhere, including on THIS board.

He had the option of getting moderators to help him, deleting offensive posts, or posters (although that may infringe on free speech). There were WARNINGS that he had posted (or rules) not to harrass each other, say negative things, etc. that members agreed to when they created an account/password. So everyone WAS forewarned by him as to what type of behavior would be tolerated (or not tolerated) by him.

I was a faithful reader of that board, not a member. My daughter was a member of the board. I will miss reading all the posts, and she made alot of GREAT friends.

Thanks JackG for your post to Adam offeering your advice and your help if he needed or wanted it. If there's a lesson to be learned by what happened I wish I was more clear on it. What do the members think?

it wasnt about the drama...believe me!!!! thats an excuse

Rummy G & Rhoq........

I had never been to the Freestyle Nation board. I had seen other freestyle websites, but for some reason, joined clubfreestyle. Actually, Clubfreestyle was my first time at online chatting as well.

RummyG & Rhoq, as members of the now defunct site, perhaps you can pass your wisdom onto us. In your opinion, what were the errors or situations that caused the downfall of Freestyle Nation? I don't mean that as a put down to the FN site, but those who don't learn from the past are doomed to repeat it. Let's avoid those issues here, and keep it goin' strong!

While I'm on the subject, I would like to say BIG thanks to JackG and Johnny Budz for their work for us at clubfreestyle! It is much appreciated.

I also want to say I have had a blast meeting all the great people on this board, and the list seems to grow each time an event is held! Looking forward to the future!

ChuckD

I really liked the Freestyle Nation BB. I had only posted like maybe once or twice but I always read it. I hope we do stay connected at this site.....
