Hey everyone i got a good question for you all. it seemed when i posted that Ian van dahl sounded kinda freestylish but more technoish everyone snaped on me and said its not freestyle so my question to you is...what is the definition of freestyle is it a love song with the same beat everytime? we all know the freestyle beat and thats what really makes a freestyle song but now pop stars are using the freestyle beat so what makes a freestyle song freestyle? many say it is about the love and the beat i say that too but i think if you sing like a freestyle artist no matter what the beat as long as it sounds freestyley it is a freestyle song. so tell me what is right from wrong in freestyle today.

In my opinion, freestyle is evolving around the world and means something different to everyone. Depending where you are in the world (Canada, USA, Europe or Brazil) it has many appelations and luckily some branded international artists with major label exposure like The underdog Project, Flying Steps, Boomfunk MCS's, Ian Van Dahl, Gigi Dagostino, Fragma, Dee Dee, Sylver and others have mixes of their singles in the genre. Appellations include freestyle, electro, 2 step, breakbeat, funky melody, old school, new school, planet rock, and a few more.

I love the freestyle remixes of "Castles In The Sky"; done in the breakbeat/electro genre. Play it loud! even though it does not sound like any of the indie US releases with cheap instrumentations, poor vocals and pressed on some obscure label that is not on any record store shelves. Un fortunately, a lot of what people call freestyle in the US sounds just like it. Let's stop whinning and enjoy the fact that the sound has newer fans and is getting new attention and demand both on radio and in the clubs in certain countries especially Canada, Germany and Brazil.
 
you know i wlways wondered about that..exactly how many songs of freestyle had the "she/he broke my heart theme??".i would say at least 80%..and the rest songs that encouraged restraining orders..lol😀
 
The definition of Freestyle..You make a point about is Freestyle just a love song with the same exact beat? I seriously think, that most of the people who love Freestyle..Say that..Because if it wasnt for that..People wouldnt critisize about how the new Freestyle isnt Freestyle, because of the new beat..Dont you ever get tired of the same beat??..LOL..Freestyle to me is the words..Whether its about love or heartbreak..And taezee...You are right about most being about heartbreaks..But anyhows..Next comes the beat to me..As long as it has some Freestyle beat to it..Its freestyle to me dammit!..😀
 
Freestyle actually has three names:

Latin HipHop(really what it is!! from the beginning 1984)
Heartthrob(because one of the first big shows were held at the Heartthrob club back in 1985)
and of course
Freestyle

dj fresh...didn't mean to snap...i really don't see any freestyle in 'castles....' - at least not the version they play on DRQ... but I THINK it appeals to people who like freestyle....
 
Crystal, do you mean breakbeats are the same old beats? Not sure if thats what you meant. If so, breakbeats are not that same beat at all. Beats from each freestyle artists are breakbeats, yet sound different from one another.
 
it depends if the freestyle song is in the breakbeat, electro, planet rock, old school, 2 step, west coast....or just plain old funky melody genres heheh
 
I think it's hard to define freestyle, since it is and has been evolving. If you thing of songs like "I need you" by B.V.S.M.P and compare that to songs like "In a Dream" by Rockelle, it's hard to find a similarity.

I think freestyle has to do with two things:
-the beat
-the lyrics (love, love lost)

But really, i think you can tell freestyle when you hear it.
