I was watching Sweet sensation performing Victim of love, from a tv show, a freestyle dvd I purchased. After the song the girls did a short interview in which they said they were finishing off a film with a group called the Boogie boys which I believed has a member called Romeo Jd who does the rap on some SS tracks. Now does anyone know if the film was released & the title?

Also at what age did Sweet sensation begin? As they seemed about 17 & made out they formed the group but I thought they were a group brought together by their producers....

interesting. I now would like to see the movie.
Could it be "East Side Story"??
I have yet to see this flick, but have heard alot about it from friends who have it.
My best bet is to try & search their names at www.imdb.com
(which is where imma go in a minute).

From my understanding, When "Hooked On You" was recorded, Romeo J.D. recruited Betty D Lebron, & it was just Betty with session back-up singers. (Notice the extremely strong chorus vocals only on that song).
& Then her friends/schoolmates, - sisters Margie & Mari Fernandez made the trio.

Not sure if they were "put" together by Romeo, or if Betty suggested them, or if they already had ideas of being a group before Betty was even chosen to sing "Hooked On You".

The Boogie Boys were known for oldskool rap songs like: "A Fly Girl", & Romeo J.D. was a member/producer, & Did the rap on "Sincerely Yours".
This is very interesting about "SS", & now I wanna know! lol.🙂

I know Corina played Frida Khalo in "Cradle Will Rock",... Have you ever seen the 1st video for "Hooked on You"??? lol They looked like HS freshmen! Do they have any songs where we hear more of Mari/Margie??

I actually think it's bullshit that this was never released or re-released. I mean, this is something that I would like to own. Why is it such a headache locating it? That cast is amazing!

If someone out there isn't too greedy as to record me a copy for a reasonable price (becus I know I asked a few people already from this site), could you please send me an e-mail.

Thanks...

CarLito,
You dont DESERVE a copy.

LMAO! Im KIDDING, IM KIDDING!!!
Ju know I gotz mad luv 4 u! 🙂
3 of my buddies have a copy of it, & I have yet to ask them to make me one. One of them is our lil' bud who will remain nameless -lol.

Well I know that Betty and Margie were born in 1968 and Sheila in either '69 or '70. Betty, Margie, and Mari (11/15/67) started in 1986. So yeah, they were about 18 or so. Sheila didn't join the group until 1988.

Sidenote, from what I know.....Mari lives in the Lower East Side with her 4 kids.

I have a copy of The East side story and Sweet Sensation arent in it. I love Sweet Sensation though.

I thought Mari (the shorter sister) was the youngest? I Saw an interview where Al Banderio asked their ages..and betty/margie said 20, Mari said 18....

I thought she was younger too. & I'd still like to know what film they were in (or were gonna be in).
I was just watching the "Take It While It's Hot" video with some friends & we were DYING!!!! It's so hilarious. lol.
We were laughing WITH them, not exactly at them. Cuz i'm sure they laugh when they see & look back at the styles they wore & their lil' dance moves. But that is by far one of the funniest videos ever.
(Gotta luv da 80's!!!)🙂

Aaaah... the "Take It While It's Hot" video!!! Do you remember the part where Mari BREAKS IT DOWN and then Margie and Betty try and follow suit? Hahaha. I thought that was crazy! The only video I was mad at was "Never Let You Go". That truly was like a showcase for Betty with two other girls in the back barely seen. I think that was the last video before Mari left and Sheila came in. My friends and I will sit and re-enact the beginning dialogue to the original "Hooked On You" video. "Yo, what's up? Girls... well, they're almost here. Who's almost here? Betty, why are we here?" Hahaha. Good times!

LOL!!
YESSsss!!! Mari breaks it, & then floats away!!! LMAO! (It's crazy, but fun to watch!)
Tru, the "Never let U Go" video is mostly Betty, & yes, that WAS the last video before Sheila came in for "Sincerely Yours". 🙂

OK, was it Me? Or did Betty's face look strangely Bloated in the "Never Let you go" video????

re: Mari/Margie in Sweet Sensation

I worked with Bob Steele who did "If Wishes Came True" for SweetSensation and the honest truth is that Mari and Margie etc were merely window dressing for the act - Betty was the only one who actually sang - they never performed on the albums OR live (they lip-synched the backing vocals on stage). All the backups were done by Audrey Wheeler, Cindy Mizelle and Jimi Tunnel - this is a fact that I know from working with producers who worked directly with them...

I don't know. I know that on "Hooked On You", those background singers were employed to sing and that it wasn't Margie or Mari. I have at least one performance though (from Rick Dees) where Margie and Sheila ARE singing live on the backgrounds. I'm not saying it was sounding the best but I wasn't mad at 'em. 🙂 Any other backgrounds other than "Hooked On You" weren't that strong. So, I wouldn't really be thinking that it wasn't them (Margie, Mari, or Sheila). You know what I'm saying? You sure 'bout them not singing on ANY tracks?

Well it's not like they might not have done a vocal here and there (I am sure the spoken parts on the records were them) but the truth is that there were a group of session singers that were used in freestyle to "punch up" the vocals on many hit tracks. I worked with a lot of these producers and I am just repeating what I was told by people who were in the studio and actually recorded them - I do know from personal experience seeing Sweet Sensation live and right in front of the small stage that only Betty's mic was live and as a singer I could tell the other two were lip synching, especially two since I was two feet away. I was not the only one who saw it, because a drunken idiot started heckling them shouting at Sheila and Margie that they were frauds. To their credit, they kept smiling and continued on without missing a beat. I don't approve of that behavior- after all, music is entertainment and an act is a product that is marketed for sale - it has to have visual appeal to a degree, especially a female act. The one thing that does bother me is when great talent does all the work and then gets little or no credit - imagine being Martha Wash and waking up one day to see a skinny young girl lip synching YOUR vocals and taking all the credit...talk about depression - she must have bought every frozen cake in the supermarket that day lol

Jimi Tunnel was a thin, white guy who could make his high voice sound very very similar to other vocalists, and most of them were female - he was a great mimic - and he was used to thicken the vocals on A LOT of well known tracks - in fact, his is the voice you hear in the hook of "Let The Music Play", "Give Me Tonight", "My Heart Gets All The Breaks" etc - listen carefully - all those hooks have the same vocals!! you can hear a very faint Shannon or Monet in the background singing along but the main voice you hear is Jimi Tunnel. Check your freestyle records and look at the credits and you will be amazed at how many classic tracks Jimi Tunnel, Cindy Mizelle and Audrey Wheeler did additional vocals for. The weird thing is that all three had solo albums that never took off...

Oh well....
