Hey guys...this is all good and all...I admire your love for freestyle...but I have a question

What new freestyle would you like Power 96 to be playing right now ?

I have the oppurtunity to play anything I want on my mixshow on KTU on Sunday nights...i can't even find 1 hour's worth of NEW freestyle to play....
 
it's not that

i don't really care if it's new school or old school i want to hear freestyle period... i want to hear freestyle fridays again... they used to have it like 3 yrs ago and now it's non-existent. peace out and freestyle lives on....

hey johnny i think power should be playing new school progressive freestyle tracks the new rockell "what you did to me", " i must go on" by julissa,""someone to love me" by larissa(freestyle mix)....there are some other tracks that they missed out on recently like "back 4 my love" by paradigm,"tonight" by jesika,"when will i see you again" by tka (although they did give this song a chance on the power wars), "lately" by george lamond,"thinking about you" & "i never said" by cynthia (got some mix show action),"until tomorrow" by audriana....or even some dope breakbeat jamz by precious & science would have been nice.....

ER, I just don't know if we have enough artillery. Its not like Freestyle is at demand. Sure everybody on this site wants it. Plus, I really don't think there is enough quality freestyle out there right now to back us up.

For instance, say you get Kid Curry on the phone and he asks you what new freestyle song you would like him to start playing......what are you going to say ?? Besides the new Rockell (What you did to me), I can't think of any NEW freestyle song that can be a radio hit. There's a few others that deserve airtime on mixshows, but not an add to the rotation.

Marlon....you're absolutely right. I believe everybody missed out on the Paradigm and George Lamond song. But we can't ask them to start playing it now. The songs are done unfortunately.

Please don't think I'm trying to bring you guys down. I'm totally behind you all. I'm just stating the facts unfortunately 🙁

I know a little about the radio business but certainly not enough to answer my own question:

With regards to Power, which has mostly turned to Top 40, trance & hip-hop, i ask this: "Is the stations listenership a product of the music played??? or is the music played a product of listeners demand??" in other words, is it possible that people will listen to Power, no matter what is played, without a drop in ratings?? i mean, it is the radio stations that introduce the music to listeners, right? and then listeners request tracks and/or go out and buy them at stores? Even back in the days when Power was all about freestyle & retro, the ratings are as strong today. My point being that we have to obtain the ratings and different demographics to see if in fact Power's strongest listenership is 18 years & under.

Would you guys agree that Power is so strong in the FM market that no matter if they increase FREESTYLE play by, say 30%, it won't affect the ratings because people ages 18-25 have such few other choices to listen to?? I don't think many people under 30 are listening to Coast 97 or Love 94!!!! Think about it??? There are really only 3 major choices on FM for 18-30 year olds: Power, 99Jamz & Y-100......and we all know Y-100 plays nothing but music that Power played out 6 months ago!!

Also, i think we need to find out how Mega's ratings are doing ??? Although mega does more disco than retro & FS...they tend to target 30 & older.

We need to convince Greg Reid & Kid Curry that people will listen to Power no matter what they play because they have such little competition. For some reason, i think of Power and their present playlists & the first thing that comes to my mind is "high school kids" ---especially in the evenings. high schoolers don't have the means to spend money on Power's ADVERTISERS
(mortgage companies, ac repairs, credit counselors)

Anyway, let me know if i'm right or if I SHOULD HAVE JUST TAKEN THE BLUE PILL INSTEAD OF THE RED PILL!!!!!!!

B/C THERE ISNT ENOUGH 'QUALITY' FS TRACKS OUT THERE THAT WOULD BE ADDED TO THE ROTATION LIKE YOU SAID, BUT WE FS'LERS WOULD LIKE TO HEAR ATLEAST CLASSICS PLAYED. BUT I DO AGREE W/ YOU JOHNNY.
 
ER..point well taken.....but here comes the real question....

You mention that we the freestyle fans want to at least hear the classics since there isn't enough quality new freestyle out......

What does it say for the state and future of freestyle if all we got to request is a song thats 12 years old ??

I HEAR WHAT YOU'RE SAYING BUT HEARING MORE FS CLASSICS IN THE ROTATION WONT HURT THEM. INSTEAD OF PLAYING THE SAME SONGS EVERY HOUR, THEY CAN THROW IN A CLASSIC FS JOINT IN PLACE.

BUT, I DO AGREE & KNOWING KID CURRY -- HE WON'T LISTEN TO OUR THOUGHTS EASILY. I KNOE HE'LL BRING UP THE LACK OF NEW FS HITS.

I'm just saying it like it is...I work for radio, so I know how it is.....

People sometimes criticize me for not playing new freestyle on any of my mixshows on KTU. The first thing I tell them is that they don't even listen to my Sunday show because I do indeed play new stuff. Then I ask them what songs should I be playing, but I never get a response.

But you're right, nothing wrong with playing a classic in the rotation every so often.

Kid Curry was against playing the new TKA song when it came out last summer.

I would strongly suggest starting to request the new Rockell "What you did to me". It definitely has radio potential
 
power96 hooked it up today

power96 played and all oldschool lunch mix today. some freestyle some retro. they were jamming. guys lets keep it going. i just want to hear freestyle on the radio... honestly i don't like many new school stuff. but whatever plays plays.!!!!

There are sooo many FS songs you can play for at least an hour or more. Even 80's music can blend in.

I can't remember the singer, but the song goes like this..."They say that good things come to those who wait, I waited too long and it might be too late. To hold you in my arms...... DOES ANYONE KNOW THE NAME OF THE SINGER?

Also, we have songs like,
Fatal Attraction, One More Shot, Tender Heart by Leather & Lace, I wanna get away (I could be wrong with the title), I can go home, pull out my tapes, and make you a long list.

Like the other FS's mentioned, POWER96 IS TODAY, WHAT IT IS BCUZ OF US-THE LISTENERS.....

I remember in 1992 when Tanner in the morning was the PG, power used to have ALL OF THE FREESTYLE PERFORMERS PICTURE UP ON A FRAME IN THE LOBBY OF THEIR STUDIO. Remember guys? Back when the office was in the corner of 441 and Miami Gardens Drive?

Then things changed slowly.

I say; We SPEAK LOUD AND CLEAR, IN A FRIENDLY SUGGESTIVE VOICE. Bring materials to the table in order to be heard.

I'm sure they would take at least 15 minutes to hear us out. As far as involving JJohnny,,,,I don't think it's a good idea. Mike is right, we don't need to get him into trouble. I'm sure he appreciates the efforts.

Nevertheless, Kid is REALLY not such a bad person....he just needs to be talked to in a good day...🙂

By the way....Did you guys hit Alcazaba on Saturday?

OMG, I did not appreciate the 3 hootchies/skank girls up on the speaker who displayed their rear ends to the public....that was a bit distasteful for me. and the crowd around me at the bar....
The place may have been packed with people around 2 am, but them girls, made many people start talking...at least where I was standing....GUYS were saying they are raunchy....

Anyway, aside from that I had a good time..

YEAH I WAS THERE SATURDAY!!! AND YES I SAW THE GIRLS ON STAGE.....DID YOU SEE THE FIGHT THAT BROKE OUT??? YOU PROBABLY GOT THERE AFTERWARDS. TWO GUYS GOT IN A SCUFFLE AT ABOUT 12:00AM, RIGHT AFTER THE BROADCAST WAS OVER. ANYWAY, I'LL BE THERE THIS SATURDAY AS WELL... THE MUSIC THEY PLAYED WAS GREAT TOO!!!! THEY ACTUALLY PLAYED "BECAUSE OF YOU" & "YOU'LL NEVER FIND ANOTHER LOVE". HOPE TO SEE YOU THIS WEEKEND

Mike, yes, I saw the fight.

I was just coming out of the ladies room and these 4 big bouncers were dragging this poor skinny but tall guy, who was not even resisting, out the front.

Then I was trying to make a phone call and cuz of the music I had to go out the same doors the commotion was coming from....needless to say, I told the black bouncer,,,"I KNOW I'M NOT SUPPOSED TO BE HERE, BUT THIS WILL ONLY TAKE A MINUTE, I'M PEACE, I'M PEACE" and he started to laugh.

However, later on at about 1:30 or so there were many people out in the terrace.

I don't know what gives with this crowd. I have not been there in several weeks. The crowd was just not that appealing to me.

As a matter of fact, there were several people my age (actually a bit younger than me) by the bar and one of the couples commented on how distasteful that scene was.

I said, "Oh well, you get this when the crowd is not the usual crowd".

I know the crowd that was there when TKA and the following week Cynthia/Coro performed were a much better one.

But, I guess I'd rather deal with younger people flirting with me than OLD FARTS who are a step away from their graves...LOL

Overall though....

Overall though, i had a great time! I even stayed for the reggae & a bit of the Hip-Hop session. The crowd is ok....but doesn't compare to concert nights. I'll tell you one thing, Zog should hold off a little bit on playing the Freestyle 'til the club is really packed. I do like the fact that proper dress is a must at Alcazaba. "No jeans, please". Plus i checked out the Heat game (or spanking, i should say) on the TV

Anyway, i'm glad you had a good time & keep in touch.

and yes i do remember the old power 96 studio with all those autographed pics of freestyle artist....they had people like erotic exotic,expose,india,tka,secret soicety,trinere,cover girls,and so many more....

ANYWAY, WHAT WAS INTERESTING IS NOT THE PROMO ITSELF, RATHER, THE PERSON WHO RECORDED THE SPOT!!!!! IT WAS B-LUV'S (BRIAN) VOICE ON THE PROMO. YOU'LL RECALL THAT B-LUV OWNED "EEEEEEEEEEEMMMMMERAAAAALLLLDDDDD CITYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!" & I BELIEVE CLUB BOCA AS WELL. SOME OF YOU MIGHT REMEMBER THAT EMERALD CITY IN FT. LAUDERDALE HOSTED ARGUABLY THE PHATEST FREESTYLE FRIDAYS I'VE EVER BEEN TO!!!!!! I HEARD, FROM A GOOD SOURCE, THAT EMERALD WAS SHUT DOWN BECAUSE THEY WERE SELLING LIQUOR TO MINORS. B-LUV WAS EVENTUALLY SENT TO JAIL.

FOR THOSE WHO NEVER WENT, FREESTYLE FRIDAYS AT EMERALD WERE OUTRAGEOUS!!!!!!! I SAW WILL 2 POWER, JUDY TORRES, STEVIE B, NOEL, & JOHNNY Os "OUT OF THE CONVENT" CONCERT....REPORTEDLY THE FIRST & ONLY SHOW JOHNNY DID SINCE GOING INTO THE MINISTRY. ANYWAY, B-LUV IS A FREESTYLE SUPPORTER MUCH LIKE JAMMIN JOHNNY IS.

MY POINT BEING THAT IF B-LUV IS BACK IN NIGHT CLUB PROMOTIONS, THEN THERE IS A VERY GOOD CHANCE THAT FREESTYLE WILL HIT SOMEWHERE IN BROWARD COUNTY.
