see when people look in from the outside they can assume to know what is going on. But since a majority of the people posting don't work in the business, its hard for them to understand the why's and why nots. Thats why down here in texas it is easy for us to play freestyle, because our shows are not formatted so we have the freedom to play anything from freestyle to hip hop. But you know what if it wasn't for the fans and their power, we wouldn't be doing a damn thing, and there isn't an artist, dj, promoter, or label in freestyle that does not appreciate what the fans feel, good or bad. So request your songs, tell your friends to call, hell go to the colleges and high schools, the clubs get signatures and then send your requests to the station. If you get 500-1000 signatures, they will take notice. Come on didn't anybody see the "Goonies" or was it "Fat Albert", well you get the point......

Ok, here goes another one of my KTU tirades lol. I'm sure Johnny B is reading this right now saying "uh oh what's he gonna say about KTU now". Ok, first of all I totally give KTU props for freestyle. Yeah, I said something positive about KTU. The time they allot to freestyle in the mix show format is absolutely great. It's also nice to see that Judy's show is the top rated show in NYC on Sunday nights (or something like that, Johnny could you clarify?). And while I do think they could give a little more variety (ex- notice that Judy pretty much plays the same songs every week with a couple of exceptions), I think its not a bad deal. Besides freestyle, I think as a rhythm based format KTU blows. I don't think they represent the so-called "beat of NY" in any way, shape or form. Maybe a couple of years ago I would have thought differently, but now as far as new dance music goes, they are an absolute mess, and because of that look at the latest quarterly Arbitron ratings. KTU is in like 7th or 8th place overall. Thats a far cry from being #1 like they were back in '97. But hey, this is a freestyle board so I'm not gonna go into my opinions on their current new playlist. Go Johnny Budz and Judy Torres, you're both doing a great job! And thats coming from the biggest dance music critic!!
i know this is an old thread but comparing what you play to back when you wrote this has there been any major changes now that its the judy show featuring you? do you play the same songs all the time or do you think you give us a good verity? by the way does the station manager say whats played or do you and judy have full authority?

wow i cant believe this thread was dredged up from almost 5 years ago. "old thread" is quite an understatement considering how things have changed in the past five years for me

let me start off by saying when i wrote this thread, i was 19 years old and had no clue or concept how radio worked. of course i just assumed i knew better than those in charge (a problem that i see in alot of people who post on message boards today) and its funny how 5 years later, i basically face the same questions and criticisms that Johnny Budz used to deal with five years back.

i'll leave it at this. first off, not only do i have complete authority of whats in my mix, i also am programming the entire show from 9-11 now. so basically the entire freestyle free for all is programmed by myself, approved by judy and then re-approved by programming.

i've spent the last month working with programming and working with Judy on bringing more variety to the show. i sat for days and ripped radio edits of songs from vinyl to cd. i sat for even more days manually entering each song into KTU's music library. Overall I gave them about 60 more freestyle songs. No pay. No nothing. Just me doing it because I felt it needed to be done. After Beatstock is over and done with, and programming has some more time to sit down with us, we'll start implementing things like the new school face off and seeing what new songs we want to feature on Sunday nights.

I've had the rare opportunity to be on both sides of the fence on this site. And I can honestly tell you it can get ugly on both sides. It was very easy for me to criticize KTU back in the day when the only knowledge I had was my passion for the music and no concept of how a mass audience is meant to be captured. Now, five years later, being on the other side and learning over the past couple of years how this business works (and trust me, I still have a lot to learn), I know now what the formula is to keeping our show so strong and our station strong.

I don't post on here all too often, because whenever I do there's always people who, for whatever reason, feel the need to attack KTU, attack me, attack the show. Everyone knows better than everyone else, and when you're in a position like the one I am in, everyone knows better than me LOL. I'm not saying I'm the smartest or the best at anything, but I am in a position of responsibility to those who enjoy freestyle music. I do what I do the best way I can to ensure that the Freestyle Free For All enjoys the largest audience possible. I am going above and beyond what my original responsibilities were three years ago when I started doing mixshows because I feel that there's more that I can bring to the table, and the station believes in me enough to let me do so.

The response to the show, my mixshows and everything I've been involved in with KTU has been overwhelming. Our ratings are wonderful- we're still #1 Sunday nights in NYC and I can assure you that Judy and I will do everything we can to keep it that way!

Best Regards

James Anthony

james.. thanks for your response. i know this is a old thread and i appreciate your taking the time. ... i was just curious about how you feel today about the music that played on KTU and how much control you and judy have over whats played during your show.

it's good that you have been on both sides of the fence on these issues because you can appreciate how we the public feel about KTU playing what we wnat to hear verses what "pays the bills" as so many have said. of course i will never feel that KTU plays enough Freestyle because sundays nigths is not enough in my book but thats not your fault and i had no intention of blaming you.

i understand what you said about why you don't post here much because i know what its like to be attacked by people who can't let a person say what they want to say without getting their panties in a bunch. i also understand why you wouldn't say anything negative about KTU since they you work for them. heck i wouldn't either.
KTU in my book is just like most stations out there. they play whatever they thing "most" people will buy. there are may freestyle fans here in NY that wishes they would play more FS but we are a minority. i really only listen when you and judy are on and sometimes the morning show but honestly i don't like gumba johnny.

if you would like to know what a true freestyle fan would want to hear more on your show then i would like a little more verity. from the really old stuff to the new generation. i would like you to play mixes with words where we can sing along.

anyway please keep doing what you do. thanks-

Thanks Payac.

I have 100% control over the show, along with Judy.

We try our best to cater to EVERYONE listening. Like I said, alot of time and energy is going into adding new songs, updating the catalogue and taking initiatives with new music. We are doing everything we can and it will take some time for these things to take place, as these things don't happen overnight, but slowly over the next couple of weeks alot of things will be taking shape.

Thanks for listening

Best Regards

I agree with james anthony below. KTU is playing freestyle but also agree with the others memebers as well. They need to play some new school freestyle as well. KTU plays the same songs over and over. KTU should also give an opportunity to other freestyle artist as well. There is alot of stuff out there that sounds great.

i think james and ktu is doing a good job. what i dont like. is how how slowly and syblymoly.

ktu is trying to distance itself from freestyle. always when it talks about dance music. always if you notice.

always.

they say and freestyle.

and freestyle.

and this

and that.

like slowly trying to create a sep between freestyle and dance. when ever ktu talks

about freestyle.

they say and everytime.

that tells me they wanna seperate it. in case they wanna part with it one day?
