Johnny Buzz or whatever your name isor anydj

I think you guys need to see what you can do (and im talking about the the dj's and just whoever has pull over what plays in stations) about getting freestyle heard in all the other 47 states. if you really want to bring freestyle back (which could happen) all you have to do is just spread the word to all the other masses. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! florida, california, new jersey, and new york for now. you need to focus on stuff gettin airplay on all those other places that just dont have a clue. you know, like call up the other states preferably stations that play 80's, dance, spanish pop, and all that other bullshit and just tell them you want them to play just one well recognized freestyle song. who knows from that one song you could have hundreds of calls going off the hook based on that one song then what takes place after that is just the dj to play another freestyle song that was just as great as that one and the rest is history........freestyles alive. but really, dont be so concerned about airplays in new york, florida, cali, and texas cuz all you doing is spreading the word in those particular areas and will remain there. and also, if hispanics wouldnt brag so much about how freestyle is their genre and producers only signin hispanics to freestyle like that we'd have a shit load of white people diggin it. so please, i dont care what you do but as long as you work on freestyle airplays in all those other places we'd be back on track. we want to get recognized not just played. peace!

the competition

i think to bring up the popularity in freestyle altogether ,the freestyle artists need to sit down with there promoters and think of a way to increase record sales aswell as radio air play in our country, and this is where ktu comes in to play.ktu has a huge advantage over the internet with there listeners from all over, and by putting a servey for freestyle music, fans should have the right to vote and to determin where should tours and ktu can branch there signal to any radio station where it is needed...

Why Are You Complaining!

Leave KTU alone. If it wasn't for KTU, we be bustin' our asses finding new music. We probably wouldn't known if there were any new freestyle music.

I love KTU and you all too cause if you didn't, yous wouldn't be here at this website reading my replies, right. I know KTU is busting their asses in trying to satisfy every listeners needs and wants but they can only take so much.

What ever happened to Gratification? We Shouldn't be complaining.

KTU-I got your back!

Hey Tenant, just remember, i don't work for ktu. Why don't you call them up and let them hear your gripes?? You make valid points, let them hear them !

I have an idea

Ok..how bout this for an idea? Why dosn't KTU have a huge promo and keep advertising for an all DAY Freestyle event with ALL requests and just SEE how many people call up! People are not requesting freestyle beacause they do not realize that ktu will play it! ALL they hear is J.LO, Ricky, and Pink and a few freestyle songs here and there besides the time slots! I'll call up Mr. big guy myself and suggest it...

Tania1380 - In terms of KTU providing new music or saving us from freestyle/dance starvation I think not. When we had nothing I made it my business to get out to the record stores searching endlessly for new stuff and if that was not enough...the internet. I dont about you...but I get what I want. If its is freestyle/dance I want, then it is freestyle/dance I get. And besides, most of the good music I heard was at clubs and believe it or not...some of the local clothing stores (they would have mixed tapes or cds). I heard it, I liked it, I asked. KTU just stepped in with the funding to purchase an FM wave and put a different kind of music out there. Especially when the music they played, I had already...now they are just a pop station.

And Mr. B-u-u-u-u-u-d-z....who is spinning the freestyle hour? I could have sworn it was you. While you may not directly work for KTU, you are spinning freestyle Saturday from 9-11 and Sunday 9-12. That is 5 hours of "freestyle". I appreciate that many hours of non-stop music and your mixes are great....but who is picking what is played....and to boot, I know mixes are replayed, meaning if you heard it last Saturday, then you will hear it again on Sunday. And dont say that it not true. I "used" to set my stereo to record those hours when i was not around or didnt have access to a radio and found the same EXACT line up of songs the following week. Yes, I wrote down the play list song for song. If it is the station picking the tunes, you need to be a rebel --- go crawl under your bed and get some outrageous tunes and play em. If this truly is your freestyle show (specifically)...then your the boss. They trust you enough to mix it -- they should trust you enough to pick it. They have no idea what we want anyway. Its called big business.

Well Mr T-e-e-e-e-eeenant, it seems as though you don't listen to ktu as often as it seems. I do NOT mix on Saturday nights, although I will be starting in the next few weeks. I do in fact mix on Sunday night, but its not for 3 hours. Judy plays the classics from 9-11 and I mix from 11-12.

You are 100% wrong by saying you hear a mix on Saturday and hear the same mix on Sunday. First of all, its 2 different mixers !! Tommy Nappi has been doing the freestyle mixes on Saturday night for quite some time now. Plus, You would not hear my Sunday mixes at any other day or time because it is too progressive, or as u say "Outragous".

You obviously don't listen to my mixshow on Sundays at 11:00 pm. If you ever did you'd know i do crawl under my bed and play 'outragous' songs. I have full control over what i play on Sundays, even though ktu is constantly telling me "nobody knows the songs you play on sunday, play more popular freestyle" Go check out my playslist of past sunday shows.

Mr. Budz...first of all I am a female ..thank you very much. And I do hear the same playlists duplicated - thats why I am so board. And nowadays, yes, I gave up on KTU because I am tired of hearing the same stuff over and over. If during the week I am not being inundated by teenie-boper central than on the freestyle shows its TKA, Cynthia, George, Cover Girls....week after week....come on please spare me. While they are "classics" they are not the only artists. I can recall one time only, about i'd say 2 years ago, when a rare mix of really old old stuff was played, back to back to back and had to friends in the car to witness the glorious moment....and it was great. If I wanted to hear that stuff, I'll go to my micmac section of my shelf and go pick a disk. And the "couple" of different things you play is just not enough. You have to keep everything fresh to keep listeners happy. Rotate stuff more. I can pull stuff off my shelf that has never been played. And for your show being only an hour, its not enough. I think Judy needs to have her show shortened or she needs to showcase more new artists. I know that is not your job, but calling does no good. I am not wasting anymore phone time on them.

Getting in the mix

Ok, I don't live in NY, and the only tim I listen to KTU is here on Sunday nites, but in Toronto we have a station Z103.5, and it's the same thing.
Guys, you have to understand (and I'm going to be accused of sacrilege here), that what you see in here pretty much IS the Freestyle audience. And for all of you moaning and whining and b*tching in here, how many of you have actually called and emailed the station? And I don't mean once, I mean BOMBARDED!!! Very few, if any of you, I'm sure.
As for the teeny pop, you'd be surprised of the closet lovers in here!! I like some of there stuff. There I said it!! Freestyle music is my love, don't get me wrong. But there has to variety, and damn guyz!! Freestyle loverz are in the minority!! Don't knock the radio station, and definitely don't knock John!! Go to your record stores, Arista, Virgin, HMV, whatever else you guys have out there!! How much shelf space does freestyle actually have? Now compare it to the teeny bopper music. Damn! Compare it to the country music or rock sections and you'll see what I mean. Freestyle (here I go blaspheming again) was never all that big to begin with. It was bigger than it is now, but it wasn't mainstream. It has the ability to make a comeback now, but that all depends on the artists, producers, labels to work at better promotion and higher quality music AND it also depends on us, the fans!! The radio stations aren't going to give any time more time for freestyle than they do now unless the fans come out in FULL EFFECT and break balls.
I remember when I used to call the radio station, I used to call and request a song, hang up, and then call right back and request the same song again. I used to request the same song like 20-40 times a day at least 4 times a week. SO did most of us old skool freestylers who were there when it began.
Start doing that, and I swear you won't have to b*tch and moan in here, because the radio stations will be listening. They know there are freestyle fans out there, but you're not calling in in droves which means one of two things. Either (a)there really aren't that many fans of freestyle so they're already catering to the market by giving you what freestyle they already give you, or (b) there are that many of you, but you don't seem to mind the present line up, because you're not killing the lines with your requests and/or complaints, so there is no need to change the format.

So either get off your butts and do something about it. Take action! Motion creates motion. Or sit back and shut up!

I don't want to seem rude, but it has been my experience that it is always the whiners who want things done their way, but never contribute any effort themselves to what they want.
I was President and founder of an social association and had over 100 members, and they were all ball breakers for every event we held. It would always be me and 2 others putting things together, planning, organizing, decorating, booking talent, whatever, and you'd always get these sux, who complain about why didn't you do this or why did you do that? So I finally got fed up and said "F-you! Why didn't I do this, and why did I do that? You don't like it, why didn't YOU do something to help? Why did YOU come out to planning meetings and make suggestions? You don't like it? Ok, next event you come and help plan!" And they never showed up, but they at least shut up!

Basically, what I am saying is. Voicing your complaints is good, but also come up with a solution. Offer to help. Be pro-active. Ask the station manager "What would you need to have happen to get more freestyle played on the air" and then see what you can do to make whatever that is, happen!

Much love on the freestyle tip!

Ms Tenant, it comes down to this. You are a hard core fan. The hardcore fan doesn't want to hear TKA, Safire, etc. I totally understand that. But believe me, there are alot less hardcore fans than there are average casual fans. The average listener doesn't want to hear Rhingo, Ann Marie, Suzy Swan, Fontaine, GT, etc. They want to hear Cynthia, George, TKA, etc. Its proven by all the requests we get on Sundays. 2/3's of the listeners are avergae fans. 1/3 are hardcore. The hardcore fans want to hear new and old rare stuff. Which is why 1/3 of the show is dedicated to the hardcore fan with my mixshow where i play rare and new freestyle.

If i produced the sunday freestyle show, sure i'd change alot. In fact, i recently gave ktu cd's of over 100 freestyle songs that they never play. Songs that deserve airplay but never get it. Hopefully they'll start adding more variety on sundays.

ALthough your input is always welcome here, its not getting us no where posting about your gripes with ktu on this board. They won't read this. If you're gonna take so much time to write your opinions here, why not take that time and write to the source where your input could make a difference ? Frankie Blues email is BlueKTU@aol.com. Jeff Z email is Jeffzktu@aol.com and Geronimo's email is Geronktu@aol.com. Those are the guys that need to hear your valid points. I tell them the same thing all the time. They need to hear it from the listeners.

I've written some very nicely worded letters in the past to Geronimo and Frankie Blue. Don't bother guys, they dont respond! They obviously dont care! And NO the letters I wrote were not along the lines of "Hey Geronimo KTU really sucks!". Trust me, I know how to write a formal letter. The fact of the matter is this, if KTU refuses to even promote new dance music, how can we expect freestyle to even be an afterthought? I mean really, we're dealing with a station that proclaims itself as "THE BEAT OF NY" 24/7, and (heres a fun fact for you guys) in the TOP 103 SONGS OF 2000, I kept track and wrote down every song: of 103 songs that made it to the KTU playlist in the year 2000, 28 songs could qualify as dance music. Thats damn pathetic! thats about 25% of all the songs that KTU put into rotation in the year 2000 was dance. In 1997, about 60% of the songs were dance. THAT goes to show you what direction they are headed. Now somebody prove me wrong!

I dont know how things are up north. But down here from what I can remember...freestyle was/is big. Back in the day, guys cruising in their IROCs with Where Are You Tonight blasting out the roof, Act III was the place to be....and guidos/guidettes were the in thing. Before HipHop made it big and alternative had a home....thats all their was aside pop tunes. Even people who dont listen to freestyle know what it is...so i dont think it has that much of a sheltered life. My sister at 17 (although a punk fan) knows and like its. My Z100 friends, grew up and know most of the words, and admit to being "closet" freestyle fans. So dont tell me that this is "all there is". And the HMV near me has quite a selection of freestyle, dance, etc. - and not just one or two rows, as well as Virgin an Coconuts. Stores like Records Plus, and Record Explosion are great, cause they get some rare stuff as well as bootleg mixes. Clubs in Jersey and Long Island still play it. Hopefully people at KTU will read the message boards, lord knows I emailed them and told them they should. Maybe we will get a savior of FM radio who will spare us. Something gotta be wrong if everyone is saying the same thing....but we will never know cause, gee well, there is no census for freestyle fans.

that's my point!!

Up north freestyle was just as big as it was in NY and Miami. Toronto is not that much different from NY except that it's cleaner and you don't need a ouija board to get off the freeway!! It's true don't even play like it's not!! 8^D

But all these closet freestyle lovers, aren't going out and requesting the music. How do you know your sister is hungry is she doesn't tell you or ask you for food? You don't.
So how are the radio stations going to know you want more freestyle if you don't call and email until they have no more room in their inboxes and their voice mail is full? They don't. And they aren't going to come and hit the websites for this info. Why are they going to go looking for reasons to change a format that is working for them? You want change; you have to go to them and get them to, otherwise they won't.
We still have clubs that play freestyle up here Plastique, Palazzo, Paparazzi, Park Avenue to name a few (i don't know why they all start with P, coincidence I guess!). We have Tony Monaco spinning freestyle on his Freestyle Frenzy show from 5-6 pm on Sundays on the new Z103.5 (what's with all the new 103.5 stations? is it an epidemic?lol)
And we have TONS of freestyle comps coming out all the time!

But you don't get what you want until you not only ask for it, but DEMAND IT!!! I never said there wasn't any freestyle in these stores and we have whole sections dedicated to them up here as well. But look at the ratio honey!! For however much space is dedicated to freestyle in a store how much is dedicated to rap or house or hip hop or rock or country or the Britney Spears BSB NSYNC section? Look at it like that and you'll see Freestyle isn't as big as it seems to us. It only seems big because we love it and it's all around us. Yah, people know what it is, but can they recognize it if they hear it or do they just lump it with the dance and euro music?
Be objective. And keep emailing and calling the station until they either (a) tell you to get lost (which they will never do!) or (b) till they give you an answer you are satisfied with.

Send them the postings that are in here if you want (if JackG is ok with that and it doesn't violate his copyright), to make your point. But do something pro-active and positive!!!

Good Luck!

LOl, Johnny man dont listen to tenant. you do what you do. and im sure you do your best at that. and you can only do too much. to me, im happy to just listening to freestyle songs again in the 2000's. so i hope you dont get alot of letters in this message board enough to stress you out. dont really look into 'em. i love ktu cuz to me thats like the only station that recognizes freestyle music so far. and you also play alot of old dance music i listened to back in the day that mtv and those other tv/radio stations have totally fogotten. well, ill see ya tomorrow, hopefully not as Kayel. Peace!

tenenat upstairs....i am very offended. i never drove an IRON back in the day. i drove a real car....a MONTE CARLO SS.......IROCS were so played out.

Kenny, neither of those stations are competition for ktu. Party doesn't even register in the a majority of the ratings. Its a tiny signal. And BLI is a different format. Although I like both stations alot.

Hmmm, it seems that some people don't understand the "politics" of radio. Commercial radio has to please the majority- meaning that what the majority wants the majority gets, simply because it pays the bills. Freestlye is always gonna be here in one form or another, but there has to be some type of evolution for it to stay alive. Everything changes and that's just life.

Hmmm, do you think that this discussion was held in '89-'90. It might have sounded like this. "hey, why aren't they playing more R&B, this dance music sucks.-"Yea, I know all they play is this Stevie B, Johnny O, Safire and Lisa Lisa. Hmmm....

I love the "old" stuff but its the "new" stuff that is going to keep freestyle alive. Johnny can't save the world, but atleast he is mixing freestyle, and it is on the air, and bottom line thats all that matters. Now, as far as competition goes maybe somebody should go to the other stations and try to mix freestyle on their own show. Its easier to talk about it than to work for it.

Poor Johnny!!!

They've been stressing you!!! here's a hug!!! Don't worry, you do a great job! Heck, if you didn't would I be listening all the way up in Canada????
