I think WKTU radio in NYC could use some competition. NYC should have another Dance radio station, then perhaps we would stand the chance of more freestyle being played on the radio. Remember what the old HOT 103 did for freestyle? then everyone else wanted to jump on board.

just a thought........

Sandman, how much more freestyle do u want ! lol
KTU play's on average, one freestyle song per hour. Plus I mix freestyle mixshows every Tuesday and Friday afternoon, Saturday nights for 2 hrs, Sunday mornings, and we have the 3 hr freestyle show on Sunday nights...

NO station in the US plays that much freestyle, nor do they have that many freestyle mixshows. Plus you'll never see 2 rhythm dance formats in the same market. I think KTU supports freestyle very much, and i'm not just saying that cause i spin for them. But thats my opinion..I'm sure other people think different. But if anyone thinks a 24-7 freestyle radio station (I've seen a few people request this on this site) would succeed, it will never.

KTU Competition

JohnnY Budz, yes of course KTU deserves recognition as do you for ~SpiNNiN~ Freestyle, but I beg to differ with you, Freestyle should not be "timed" on different days ...just played a lot. Not a bunch of time-slots,that's what TV is for!! Played enough to lose count. I betcha if some small station played 24-7 Freesytle it would defintely kick some ass! This forum and others prove that it is still kickin' Who knows if I win the lotto this weekend it will be in the agenda.>🙂 Please listen to my cries "KeeP ~SpiNNiN~ that Freestyle"™

yah mon.....

I have been noticing quite a bit w/ ktu. for instance today at work, me and a buddy of mine were at the break room at my
job and all of a sudden you hear "ktu frfrfreestyle mix" and
u would hear the beginning of SOAVE's "Crying over you". we started bugging out! and with todays nice weather, we were reminising about freestyle and SUMMER!!and the spring weather!! ok, i wrote more than enuff...peaceoutty!

u got it bigmarc!!!

reminiscing about freestyle with the sunroof open and the freestyle blastin, with all the old people in the neighborhood sayin, what is that rubbish!!
It's freestyle old man!!!! YEAH BABY!!!!
later bro steve b

I do Agree

I do think there should be another station to compete with KTU...why? Well they don't play my stuff...LOL....No serious they have in the latin La mega which is 97.9fm was the only one to play Salsa and Merengue and they bought Suave and change it to Amor play love songs, then came Caliente and try to compete with them by playing only salsa and merengue but they where losing out so someone else bought the station and turn it to Latino Mix which plays Love songs, and all latin music even Freestyle along with english music so they have become very popular these days for there variety. So compition is good and believe me I thought the same thing there should be another station to give KTU Comp! and I remenneace on those days to guys how which they were back......Damm i'm old...

FREESTYLE ON THE RADIO!!!

Let's give KTU it's props!!! If it wasn't for them, Freestyle music would never be heard....

....But, I would like to hear more of it throughout the day. Back in the day... KTU was known for it's "4eVerFreeStyle" music!

sooooo.....

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE play more Freestyle music!!!!

Ok, here goes another one of my KTU tirades lol. I'm sure Johnny B is reading this right now saying "uh oh what's he gonna say about KTU now". Ok, first of all I totally give KTU props for freestyle. Yeah, I said something positive about KTU. The time they allot to freestyle in the mix show format is absolutely great. It's also nice to see that Judy's show is the top rated show in NYC on Sunday nights (or something like that, Johnny could you clarify?). And while I do think they could give a little more variety (ex- notice that Judy pretty much plays the same songs every week with a couple of exceptions), I think its not a bad deal. Besides freestyle, I think as a rhythm based format KTU blows. I don't think they represent the so-called "beat of NY" in any way, shape or form. Maybe a couple of years ago I would have thought differently, but now as far as new dance music goes, they are an absolute mess, and because of that look at the latest quarterly Arbitron ratings. KTU is in like 7th or 8th place overall. Thats a far cry from being #1 like they were back in '97. But hey, this is a freestyle board so I'm not gonna go into my opinions on their current new playlist. Go Johnny Budz and Judy Torres, you're both doing a great job! And thats coming from the biggest dance music critic!!

KTU

I love to KTU, but not enough Freestyle is played during the afternoons... way too much Britney, BSB, etc...

James, I'm keeping my distance from you ! lol

I will reply to one comment you made in regards to the ratings. Almost EVERY stations ratings went down last period. Z100, PLJ, KTU, Hot 97, etc. This was because of the presidential debate and world series. EVERYBODY was listening to AM radio. Of course I know u guys weren't, but the core audience was.

I'm not writing in defense of ktu. You all have valid points. But just remember, not everybody likes freestyle like we do. For as many people that love it when a freestyle song comes on, there are alot of people that turn the dial. Brittney, ricky, etc get ALOT more requests than any freestyle song does during the day.

If you wanna hear more freestyle during the day, CALL UP and request it !! Approx 5%-10% of the requests KTU gets on an average day is a freestyle request.

REQUESTING I SHALL GO!!!

Johnny Budz... are you serious? That's all the percentage is for Freestyle requests! I'll do my part to raise that number.

Off the Freestyle topic for second... but it does have something in common...

Johnny Budz... when I first saw Pink's video "There you Go" on TV, I called KTU the next day & requested it. The girl who answers the phone told me KTU does not play that song... then a couple of weeks later - it started playing on the air (KTU). I have requested Freestyle songs, but they're not played! How does a song get played?

Always a fan,
Gina =0)

Ps... I can never get enough Nyasia ;0) & George LaMond just to name my two favorites. That is besides you Judy Torres !!!!

i think frankie blue the program director of ktu should realise what dance music in new york is about.
its not ricky martin or pink or what have you
fine play that stuff if you want but dont call yourslef new yorks dance music leader!
first off freestyle played a big part in new york dance music
they dont play nearly enuff house ,disco ,techno, freestyle or other dance music
ktu please get a grip
new york dance music means alot more then jennifer lopez every 10 min

I'm on the fence on this one.

I always try to see both sides of the story. People may think this is indecision, I think it's understanding.

KTU is trying to appeal to the younger fan base. The ones with the disposable cash who will go out and buy the products advertised on KTU. This bracket is the young girls who crave N'sync, BSB, Brittney, Christina, 98 Degrees, Jessica Simpson and so on. This is why you hear sooooo much teen pop stuff. Do I like it, no but to hear the occasional freestyle song, I tolerate it.

While KTU is far from "the BEAT of NY", I find that a lot of the songs that hit the Top 10 on the Hot 100 or get added to PLJ and Z100, got their start on KTU. Here is a partial list of KTU success stories.

Sonique-Feel So Good-Top 10
Toni Braxton-Wasn't Man Enough-#1
Melanie C.-I Turn To You-Added at Z100
Laura Fabian-I will Love Again-Top 40-added at Z100
Madonna-Music-#1
Debalah Morgan-Dance With Me-Top 10
Alice DeJay-Better Off Alone-Added at Z100
Rockell-In A Dream-Can't We Try-When I'm Gone-all added at Z100
Pink-There You Go-Most Girls-Top 10

These songs may not be freestyle, but KTU played them first, before other stations, and before they broke big. KTU just started playing a new song that I think will be huge. I think it's called "Stranger in My House" and I don't know who sings it, but remember, KTU had it first.

While KTU is a great station for dance and freestyle...I definitely agree that they do not play enough of that. Most of the stuff is repeated way toooooo many times and some songs don't even constitute dance or freestyle - leave that for the other stations - and let the teenie-bopers go find their own station (they don't even know what freestyle is). You can hear a song at 3:00 and the same song repeated at like 4:15. As for the freestyle hours, I dont mind so much that it is given a certain "slot". But I do mind constantly hearing the same cynthia, george lamond, judy torres and cover girl songs over and over. Dont get me wrong, I love them all just as much as the next person and have the CD collection to prove it. But I want to hear different, old and rare. I want to hear LA Girls, Jasmin, NV, Raiana Paige, Rhingo. There are toooons of awesome freestyle songs that for some reason are just not played. I'm sorry but even the most loyal listeners get board of the same songs over and over. I'm sure someone up there has NAP to get what you guys dont already have...so there is no excuse for not mixing it up more. Come on...lets go guys.

In response to the last couple of posts:

DJ Munster- THANK YOU!! I agree 100%. Don't call yourself the "Beat of NY" and proceed to play Jennifer Lopez every ten minutes of the day. Oh and by the way, email me at DJCaps213@aol.com for info about the DJ Battle in Bklyn.

Chuck D- Your list of success stories is true. But think about this. If KTU didnt play Pink or Madonna first, I'm sure every other station would have played them anyways. I don't think KTU sets any precedence whatsoever among NY radio stations. It makes me laugh when they play their commercial that goes "KTU....FIRST with PINK, FIRST with DEBELAH MORGAN, FIRST with ALICE DEEJAY....Your music comes first on the Beat of NY". Number one, two of the three songs aren't even dance, and number three, the Alice Deejay song has been dead for a little over ninth months now. Somebody should tell Frankie Blue that other radio stations across the country have already been playing Alice Deejays second, third and fourth single. But OUR music comes first, sure.

Tenant- Yes, it does suck to hear the same songs every hour and fifteen minutes (yeah, thats the usual time they repeat songs). It's sad that if you look at any KTU playlist from the last year, its seriously outdated. I mean, COME ON PEOPLE, Sonique is STILL on the playlist well over a year after the fact.

I STILL LOVE KTU SUNDAY NIGHTS THOUGH!!!

if there is a ktu debate u know i have to be in it!!! when ktu came out on the airwaves there wasnt a bigger supporter then me out there...now i cant even turn my radio on...its pathetic they do play some freestyle but not much, its all pop crap...they should just take z100s playlist and follow song for song...they do have judy on sunday nights but like someone says its the same songs!!! u know the ones i am talking about...tommy boy, and micmac comps...its a shame i wish they could change it, but i guess its not going to happen...so i just avoid the radio all together...i only listen to my cds, and now D's show on friday nights!!!! hey i make my own play list, LOL

Johnny,

Don't get me wrong, i am grateful for ktu playing freestyle. But would they support new music from new or our all time favorite artist??

When the old HOT 103 first came out, they took a wonderful chance and played music from unknown singers, (safire, george lamond, judy torres, sweet sensation, cover girls, noel, etc). these artist prove themselves and had tremendous success and took 103 and many, many other stations across america to the TOP.

KTU dosent seem to want to chance it, george lamond & cynthia both had albums out in the last 2 years of so, didnt hear ktu played their new stuff much. and these singers are established, they have a following. When SAFIRE releases her new album, will they support her new music???

i just think & hope that a competitor would take the same chance as HOT 103 did and then perhaps KTU would follow.

Sandman, 10 years ago Freesstyle was at a demand. Its not 1990 no more. In the music industry, freestyle is considered a 'dated sound'. Its not at a demand. I know you people disagree, because you have such a love for it you probably say 'How can anyone NOT like freestyle!!!" Believe me, there is nobody banging on Frankie Blue's door at KTU with slammin new freestyle for him to hear. Freestyle lovers are constantly bashing the New school sound. If freestyle freaks don't like it, how do you expect the average fan to ? I get emails and calls to the station with people telling me to play more old school stuff on sundays because they say the new sound sucks. But I'll keep playing the new stuff. Gotta keep it alive !

Sure they should of played the new Cynthia, Robin Fox, Paradign and George Lamond. I agree with you 100%. I pushed it on them all summer. I played them as much as i can in my mixshows on Sunday nights. In case you dont' know, I feature NEW freestyle in my mixshow on KTU every Sunday night at 11-midnight. Also, I try to play as much variety as i can with my Freestyle lunch mixes. Just yesterday, i played Susan Santiago "Open up your heart" in the lunch mix. Have you ever heard that song on the radio ????

But if anyone thinks that a radio station is gonna come on board and play Freestyle 24-7, it'll never happen. Answer the phones at KTU for 1 day. All you'll get is requests for Britney, Nysync, etc. Alice Deejay STILL gets requests believe it or not. No freestyle. Believe me, NOBODY is calling asking for Rhingo or Jasmin..lol

My suggestion is to CALL AND REQUEST NEW FREESTYLE !!!!!!! Posting on this board won't do much, except bring others down with all the negativity. Or let Frankie Blue hear what you have to say ! Let him know you want new freestyle. Call him up. 201-420-3700.

Remember, you can still hear new freestyle every sunday night on my mixshow !! ;-) By the way, Safire's new cd will be a greatest hits cd. There will be NO new music on it, so don't expect it to get any airplay.

I totally agree with you, freestyle isnt what it used to be and it never will be the same again. I'm an old fart from back in the days (age 34). I've been there since the beginning and have many, many great memories of the freestyle/club scene, you know HEARTTHROBS, 1018, LAMOUR EAST, DEVILS NEST, ETC... I LOVED THOSE DAYS!!

and i too, am not a fan of the new freestyle music (even thought i have tried listening to it, sorry cant get into it), but i would like radio stations to support my favorite artist & whatever direction they choose to go with their music.

I agree if people like CYNTHIA chose to continue singing freestyle music, then i feel she should change it a bit, update the music to fit into today's scene.

And trust me im not looking for a station to play freestyle 24/7.. no way .. i still love my jazz, salsa, club & soul music.

I appreciate all the wonderful things that you and wktu are doing by keeping, at least the old school freestyle alive.

And i have call KTU, even e-mailing judy torres & michelle visage.

I only wish that more radio stations & record companies would support these hard working singers who have put their sweat & tears into their careers.

and boy johnny, you really crushed my heart by telling me that SAFIRE's greatest hits album will have no new music on it. I love that girl & think she is extremely talented.

GOD I HOPE YOUR WRONG!!!

P.S. johnny, on occassion i check into the chat rooms on sunday nites, and i get kinda board with the usual "whats up" & "my songs on the radio" you know what i mean.

Perhaps you should have a topic for the evening, so we could have something intellegent to discuss.

U will always have my support on radio & on your great website. too bad we didnt have computers at the height of the freestyle scene!!

Best regards.

I didnt think listeners had to call up and request to get some variation on the air. I would have thought that would be up to you radio station people to give us listeners some variety. Oh boy....you played Susan Santiago - whose disk I had forever - its a good song and should have been played long ago. Requesting new freestyle will do no good. I hope that KTU gets some competition. Then they can officially change their name to "your number one pop music station". For now, fans of true dance, tecno & freestyle will have to resort to their collections....or better yet...on air broadcasting sites. There are plenty of them that do play that kind of music 24/7.

And better yet, it seems this station can only cater to one group of listeners at a time. Either teenie-bopers or die hard dance fans. But call me crazy, or when KTU has events is it not age 21 to attend - considering they are at clubs where no one under 21 is permitted? Shouldnt the music preference of your attendees take precedence over the teenie-bopers who CANT attend the events. Where do you make your money from - cd sales or events? You cant possibly expect me to believe that these requested songs of Britney & BSB are coming from over 21ers with full time jobs who have nothing better to do than listen to KTU? I beg to differ dear sir. It has nothing to do with die hard freestyle fans trying to keep the music alive. It does have to do with the age bracket your catering to. I am 26 and dont want to hear Britney, these little boy bands or Jennifer Lopez. This is the reason KTU has been switched from no. 1 on my presets to no. 5 - it killed me to do that. I've been listening since inception.
