Singing Live / Lip Synch

If I go to a show and the artist is lip-synching, then that's probably the last show of theirs I will check out. I mean what's the point of me coming out to see you if it's just gonna be the same exact way as the cd? I might as well just save money and turn on the cd and look at the cover picture. I don't think it's kewl in ANY genre of music to lip-synch. A lot (if not all) of those pop acts lip-synch like it's the ONLY way to do a show. A lot of performers can actually sing AND dance at the same time, so it's not like it's impossible. I mean your voice will naturally shake a little because your moving. But if the dance routine is that complicated, hey, that's what background dancers are for! I really like when the artist has a live band to jazz the track up a little and throw in some variations to the original. I mean you can listen to the cd and get an idea, but seeing an artist live gives a fan a chance to see how the artist interprets their material.

I've never been to a freestyle show though so I don't know how those go or what they do. But I would love to see Safire do an acapella show of all her stuff backed up by a jazz or salsa band (the cover of "Thinking Of You" was dope!). I think she could totally set the mood for something like that and it would be off the hook!

Yes Mark, bands would be great, but in Freestyle that's not going to happen in this day & age.
First of all you would need at alot of money, for rehearsals with the band, for the rehearsal studio, then you have to pay the band, the background singers, the dancers(for the show and the rehearsal time)and after all that you have to make sure it's going to sounds as good as the track, and in many cases they don't sound even close to the band, but that its because freestyle songs are technically made, midi, not live instruments, then you even if you have the money for all that and your willing to dish it out for a "freetsyle show" only a handful of clubs have the space and the money to house you. In order to have all that going on in a "fresstyle show" you have to make sure the club is going to pay you the bucks for it, which in most cases they don't. so if someones waiting for an artist to dish out thousands of their own dollar to put together a live band to perfomr in a small club, that most people don't even go to, then it's going to be a long wait.

But Mark, I will tel you this Back when Safire was in Japan she did it all with her live band, and trust me she has told me how much work and how much money it takes to have a live band show, especially when your a freestyle artist. Un fortunately🙁

I agree with Naya as she follows the money trail involved so well 🙂

My hat then has to be off to GEORGE LAMOND who has just completed adding whatever it took to make a live band incorporate the music for his English songs. When Harv Roman interviewed George recently on Wake Up Dancing, he used my question about which type of music he preferred to sing live.

For the reasons Naya mentions he picked Salsa as he didn't have the ability to move outside the recorded tracks beats. Now he does GO GEORGE!!!!

I've always wanted to see George perform live. His new band just wants me want to see him now more than ever 🙂 WTG Angel "Mambo" LeBron, George's musical director!

As for most of the other acts, they just don't have the $$$$ resources but I would support them. They seem to do the best they can at each venue all of your are nice enough to write about.

oh and that's another thing I forgot to mention, you have to pay the Music Director and to write the music as closely as possible to the track. thanks for reminding me bassy!.lolol

my hat also goes off to my Georgie Porgie😉

I'm sure it was hard. I wish I had been around to see that though. But I know the type of show your refering to. She was probably a headlining act on a tour. But that's not what I meant.

I really like jazz clubs and a lot of different acts flow in and out. When I heard the Ricky Gonzales verion of "Thinking About You", I was taken! All the instruments and her vocals. That's what it reminded me of, a kind of jazz club thing. A nice laid-back smooth atmosphere with just her and her band (no dancers, no routine). But that's just something that ran across my mind that I think that she'd be off the hook at. It's not something I think that just any freestyle artist could do but she's always somebody whose pushing boundaries and doing new things that's why I can see her doing something like that. George LaMond is another artist who I could see rocking a live band! But i'd like to see both of them either way!😛

I see this question has started up in here too. So here I go with my two bits.

I believe a live band will invigorate any performance if it's done right. This would either make or break an artist because you are being exposed in the raw. Though I believe the music is just as important as the vocalist.
For those who can't rig up a band I believe they should enhance their show by other means.
Have backup dancers so the vocalist doesn't sing and dance all through their show. I know it rough doing both so leave the dancing to your dancers and focus more on emulating your song.

They should have a better stage presence. Meaning they shouldn't look like they just stepped out of their bed. Be more glam than grunge. An be more expressive and into their song than just standing there.

Hey Naya, how you doing. I especially love it when they sing in accapella. I can vouch for Naya that she tears the roof off when she hits it in acapella. I'm sorry to say that alot of the old school never had a strong voice like Naya, Soave, George, Judy, India and others.... that they had to resort to lip synching their songs. Alot of them didn't do it for the love of it but for their 15 minutes of fame. They were nothing but studio clones and that's what has been killing freestyle. They let everybody and thier mothers to sing a freestyle track.

Let's hope we can change it so that we are once again respected as a viable music genre.

Peace to all!! :spinround See ya in the trenches!

I sing over my tracks which I have the studio engineer /Producer do a Cd, Adat , with my tracks on it. Sometimes I have them do a Dub version but believe me for those who have seen me I give it all I got .

No Brittany spears here.

FEEDBACKING MICROPHONES? THAT'S A SAD THING...BUT WE ALL KNOW THAT A VOCALIST IS NOT SUPPOSED TO STAND TOO CLOSE TO THE MONITORS WHEN THEY SING THAT'S PART OF THE CAUSE OF A FEED BACK OR AN ENGINEER THAT DOESN'T KNOW WHAT HE'S DOING.

i have no prob with them singingover their tracks. its hard to reproduce the sound of the actual song with a live band, since ten to one a live band did not record the song in the studio. big diffrence between rock music and freestyle, right?

So do they have instrumental versions of their songs and then sing over that? coz thats not lip-sincing.

hey, and as long as they are dancing and moving around up there and smiling at the crowd, i dont care! its all about stage presence, ya feel me?

Well i just wanted to add my 2 cents into the topic as far as having a live band behind you .... i was at a George Lamond rehearsal with a live band for his freestyle songs in English and I must say it was incredible he is definitely the best vocalist /performer rolled in one well that my opinion 🙂 soon everyone will have a chance to experience what he has in store and I MIT add it sounds great. Now as far as singing live I sing over my music but I do have my mic up and I ad-lib and do as much as I can different from the original version just to give a lil something extra to the show, anyone who has seen me knows IM singing. I think its important, that's what people want to hear other wise we can just all pop in a CD and listen to the actual song LOL. But there are many reasons for singing over a trax feed back, bad mic, engineer ect there's a number of thing's that can go wrong. so i take my hat off to the few who do sing live 😉 like George.
well that's my 2 cents LOL. laterz

Sing live or maybe not

I for one always say sing live this is your profession this what u do ..your a professional right there should be no reason to half step
itz a challenge yes but if it wasnt everyone would be calling themselves a vocalist ..and as u know thats not possible but thats in the big leauges where if there are problems they would be minor cause of the numerous sound checks before and up untill the show..

but that a luxury that isnt for us as freestyle singers that most of us are forced to use medioakcore equipment most shows we do..
most are in clubs and at festivals that most of all the time sound like crap. so how u think the crowd feels when they wating for there favorite artist to come on and they are like dam he or she was really awful in person it z not good 4 the fan or the artist no one would come to his or her next show

itz like a god send to have a great sounding mic and sound system and wouldnt be a problem to sing live i guarntee it .
.but as a choice now i would choose to sing on top of my track as many has said before me and just put on the best show i can
so in short we give u the best we can with the means infront of us

It's been a few years since I sang live and now that I will soon be performing again (God willing the Booking LOL) I will do it live. I used to be a great dancer a few pounds back. Thats why I will have "dancers" for me while I sing. If i try and dance and sing right now I'd need an oxygen tank attached to the mic stand.
Albuterol anyone?
Entertaining is the name of the game and I feel strong vocal presentation is the mark of a true artist live is the only way to go !
