Why do some artists choose to lip synch over singing live when performing??

Don't they sing with the music anyway?? Is it easier to dance lip synch or is to preserve the voice??

I was just curious what the benefits and downfalls were..

Do any artists (if you are on) prefer one over the other??

Who makes the choice of which one he/she does?? Is it the manager or the artist??

Inquiring mind(s) would love to know...

Dance music, it's OK to Lip Sync since most dance tracks are studio oriented. Now with pop stars, it's not OK even though teen pop artist make studio oriented music(which is why their careers last 2 singles!!LOL). If Mariah(I'm a total nut)Carey or Whitney(on the hippie grass)Houston lip sync, that would be a disapointment.

I understand the whole commercial Pop thing, but - my question is with regard to Freestyle...

Why do some opt to lip synch as opposed to singing live??

I myself, Have done the live thing a couple of times, and had misfortunes of systems not being that great, I personally DON"T LIP SYNC, but opt to sing over the track, although my Mic, is louder than the track. And for those of you who do go to the concerts, can vouch to the fact, that I have done Acapellas twice at blis, just to let you guys know that I do sing..lol and not just move my lips. But that's just my answer, can't speak for anyone else though.

they lip synch so they can dance at the same time and it wont sound funny you know like their out of breath lol lol lol lol
thats what i always thought lol

You have a point there, we all saw PINK's disastrous live singing and dance routine at the awards a couple of years ago, but there is a difference between lip syncing, and singing over ones track, so which on is it?

Well,

For those that really catch these things or at least pay attention, lol. Freestyle artists DO sing over there own tracks. I have been to plenty of shows and have heard the actual voice most if not ALL the time. Artists that rather have the crowd attention focused on their dance abilities rather than vocal talent do most of the Lip Sh*t. They haven't mastered the ability to dance and have enough air to sing. Unlike Freestyle Artists who have mastered both well enough to still be able to sing and dance well. Remember, we are not talking about big venues with large speakers and monitors for the artists to hear their voice. We are talking about small clubs, with even smaller systems. Freestyle artists have still made an effort to give the best show possible with the hand dealt to them. It's a shame really people still don't see this. Example: Wild Palm and Naya. She sang live over her track, the mic was loud enough at first where she WAS heard, up until feedback done f'd up one monitor. So they had to cut back. The effort was clearly there, and the crowd still sang along. Example: TKA. Who best to call out in defense of this than the masters themselves. They have had some wonderful dance routines and Kayel still pumps it hard enough. I was a dancer once and when you have two other dancers with you , it tends to get a bit electric. Tiring as well, but still they sang. So, the best answer to your question ma is too get near the stage and see it for yourself. They do it.! Nuff said!

Good question Bella!!! I'd like to know too!! I've seen some freestyle shows and never noticed that they were lip syncing? I'd like to know who makes the decision too for when I'm ready to get on stage. And Naya...yes I've heard about your awesome acapella routines. Can't wait to hear you perform on the 26th!!!!!!

Naya - in your opinion...

Is it easier to sing over the tracks?? Also, when you say track - is it just instrumental or is it a studio demo, or is it like your CD that we purchase from the store???

Is it easier to just lip synch, meaning just "mouthing" the words over the track?? Don't you wind up singing anyway so to speak??

Who decides on which method you/the artist does??

singing over the track gives it a much fatter sound period.

it's not the CD you buy in the store, it is a showtape done at the studio specifically for the shows. No demos.

Mouthing the words: the only time I ever "MOUTHED" over my words, was when I had to do it for a cable showback in the day. When I did Arties show, I couldn't "MOUTH" the words if my life depended on it.

The decision as to how you want to perform is totally up to the artist, unless they are ruled (managed) by someone who makes the decisions for them.

So in my opinion there you have it.
Is there someone in particular you calling out?

Inquirering minds want to know😉

I THINK ITS EASIER TO TELL WHEN AN ARTIST IS LIP SYNCHING SPECIALLY IF U UP IN THE FRONT LIKE MY ASS BE, IVE BEEN TO A LOT OF FREESTYLE SHOWS I DONT BE PAYING IT ANY MIND TO IT THEY SOUND GOOD LOL FOR THE MOST PART I THINK THEY SING OVER THERE OWN TRACKS RATHER THEN LIP SYNCH I HAVE SEEN NAYA DO ACAPELLA SEVERAL TIMES AND WE KNOW THIS DIVA CAN BLOW AT SAIFRES SHOW IN OHM SHE CAME ON DOING ACAPELLA WHICH I MIGHT ADD WAS OFF THE F***ING HOOK MADE ME CRY 🙂

Nahhhhhhh, not calling out anyone - actually I am behaving this week hehheeee I am just being inquisitve...

I used to see so many shows back in the day and it never really phased me one way or the other.. I was just there for the artist regardless if it was in sign language LOL

A fan is a fan is a fan.. I will take my music anyway I can get it..

Believe it or not, when I was cleaning out some boxes at my house aka the Sanford & Son Palace hehee, I found an old Menudo tape of them performing on Nickelodeon (yes I admit - I loved, loved Robby Rosa)and it made me think....

I was always curious what the mechanics behind performances were..

I give you guys lots and lots of credit, I would be up there with
my Chianti, cigarettes and oxygen tank..

I DONT EVEN CARE I JUST LOVE HEARING THE SONGS AND WATCHING PERFORMANCES.... THE BEST PERFORMERS ARE FREESTYLE SINGERS I THINK THAT FROM MY OWN EXPIERIENCE IVE SEENN R&B AND RAPPERS PERFORM BUT TO ME ITS ALWAYS THE BEST WITH FREESTYLE. CAUSE THATS WHERE IT ALL STARTED IN THE CLUBS AND ITS JUST A GOOD VIBE THEY GET YOU ALL HYPED UP AND EVERYONE SINGS ALONG... ITS THE BEST
FREESTYLE FOREVER BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
EDNA

:yeey I agree with ya Edna.. I just get that nosy bug every once in a blue with the fundamentals behind the music..

Remember the whole controversy with New Kids On The Block and whether or not they were lip synching? Well I saw them a concert in few times and one time Jordan Knight tried to hit a high note....and let's just say it didnt happen...lol As for freestyle artists, I dont care what they do...lol....I still love seeing them live. 🙂
