A 9-year-old girl was raped on a Long Island Rail Road train last night by a man purported to be the girl's uncle, a railroad spokesman said.
Brian Dolan, the railroad spokesman, said the man, whose name is not being used to protect the identity of the victim, was arrested by an off-duty MTA police sergeant who was on the train and responded to the girl's calls for help.
Dolan said the girl was traveling with the man and her 5-year-old brother on the 9:11 p.m. train from Ronkonkoma to New York City when the attack allegedly occurred.
The train was in the Farmingdale area, about 9:42 p.m., Dolan said, when "she called out for help and an off-duty sergeant who was on the train came to her aide. They were taken off at the Bethpage station."
The train was taken out of service there to allow police to check for evidence. Passengers were put on the following train.
The girl was taken to the Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, where her condition was not available last night.
The suspect is being charged with one count of first-degree rape and one count of first-degree criminal sexual act. He is scheduled to be arraigned today at First District Court.
