Should poorer countries try to be more like us to succeed?

heh heh.. this actually isnt the first time I turn to CF for help on schoolwork. come on, you all remember what it was like to be 17 again and in high school during finals. anyway this is an essay for my final exam that i'm writing & planning to memorize for thursday. here's the question:


Should developing nations adopt "Western" values in order to achieve economic growth & high social standards? Should poorer nations have to take on North American values to succeed in the world? Or can they develop in their own way?

i think yes, because the world revolves around north america and we are all interconnected - so if other countries don't adopt our values, they won't become "developed" nations.

yeah but our country is far from perfect....it's pretty ****ed up if you ask me....we have, homelessness, kids having kids, disease, and people in government not giving a shit about minorities while they get rich.....and as rich as this country is they don't extend any type of help to those in need...instead they build stadiums and condos (for the rich) and pay politicians high salaries to continue to mess things up while in office and continue fighting a war that seems far from over....so what is it that they are supposed to learn from us??? enlighten me.

^^ awesome points there nina. you're right about how north america can also be seen as a bad influence - still, in other countries there are things like child labour and oppression of women and overpopulation and genocide. so what's worse?

what's worse? seniors having their medical coverage cut as well as needy adults (yeah I work w/medicaid so I know) it's a struggle where they can't even afford medicine to treat ailments that can kill them.....the corrupted justice system that we have ....we have alot of bigotry in this country..(more than people can imagine) and if not why do they make it so hard for us to live in decent neighborhoods? then again ....look at the people around us...our peers killing each other over stupidy and ignorance... they needed to build a sytem where people are aware of rapists (why not castration and make that shit stop?) ....robbing each other and committing crimes to fill jails to it's capacity where they have to build more jails....why do inmates live in luxury instead of truly paying for crimes (tv's, magazines, cigarettes, ect) they should not be alotted any of these things.

what we need is more schools, more recreation for the lost generations that's up and coming. we can extend all the help to other countries and be so generous yet we have all these problems of our own w/no resolutions.....who's the laughin stock?

In all reality a lot of underdeveloped countries are as such because they dont have the resources needed to uplift themselves. Take Africa for example it is rich in natural resorces (Diamonds, Gold etc) but they do not have the resources they need. If they did they could be one of the if not the most powerful country. These countrys remain so poor because of corrupt govenments and politicians within the country. A lot of countrys look down on western values but again it isnt that acountry choes to be poor its the laclk of that doesnt let them prosper.

see.. perfectly supports the point i'd like to make. more good points nina, there is a LOT of corruption in our society - we are really no better than "poor" countries. ok - so seing that this corruption is happening here why is it now that the U.S. is the king of the world?

The problem is that all people do not act the same. Every race has its own religion, morals, way of life. That is why no other country cannot be as a USA or ever will be.

Americans are very intelligent...thats how we made it this far. If we were not intelligent we would not have a USA.

We have alot to be greatful for yet people take alot of things for granted...so if there's anything that other countries can learn is exactly that "values" how to value what you have and appreciate it all the same no matter how big or small. (whether it be family, money, material things , friends ect)
