we need it. its still the #1 dance station. without it, freestyle will be lost. trust me. if its gone then consider seeing and hearing less artists and performances at clubs and venues.

Technically it's a "rhythmic adult contemporary station", not dance. And for the demographics that 'KTU is specifically targeting (Female 25-54), freestyle will NOT disappear.

If anything, freestyle on 'KTU makes total sense. The music won't disappear, even with the "Freestyle Free 4 All" gone since 'KTU knows that, based on the demos, that freestyle is important to them for the bottom line......$$$$. Driving today (2-12) while going up and down the dial, 'KTU was playing Johnny O.

What makes this decision stink is the fact that "the base" (aka: freestyle fans 🙂 ) connected here with a legendary artist who was also the main voice of the show. It wasn't just about the music because, quite frankly, you could tune in during the day and hear the songs on rotation. It was Judy Torres...plain and simple and as freestyle fans; seeing her in concerts from back in the days to recent, she was the "heart and soul" on the radio where you could "reach out" and connect to her because she was the part of your "life experience", musically. 😀

Now, she wasn't fired thank goodness (with the way the radio industry is nowadays, they are giving out pink slips left and right), but it's as if things were "stripped" off, kinda like a car after it was stolen and the parts are out because while there will still be some freestyle, Judy's show will sound like every other regular weekend show.

I am still curious what 'KTU is up to since you don't do something like this unless there's a bigger plan down the road....which admittedly I can't see since the station actually did better with the ratings as a rhythmic A/C, versus 1996 - 2006

well don't get me wrong i love and enjoy freestyle i grew up listening to that music but that KTU freestyle is a total waste half those beats don't even go with the songs they put them withi mean its nothing like it was back in the days but i'll e-mail them and let them know what freestyle means to all of us other wise i guess it would all go to hell...........

Please don’t be so technical about this. This is not about pointing fingers or placing blame its about helping this movement. Please set aside your personal beliefs.

I don't know if you were referring to me K7 but believe me what I've been doing, for the past 15 years or so, is about helping the movement, which is dance music as a whole and that DOES include freestyle.

Yet, of course with anger, one can't help figuring why a decision came about. And that's what I'm speculating in the back of my mind as I am sure others are. 'KTU had this show for 12 years and now, "poof"...gone. Most people are upset with "KTU Sucks", "freakin 'KTU, I never listened", etc. and that's fine with the anger emotions coming out. But there had to be a financial reason and that's what I'm trying to figure out, outside of that initial anger.

You had a "core" audience tuning in and that's what helped maintain that show for all these years. The show was "family" for that core. So, why now? And what's coming down the road? These are questions that need to be asked while the e-mails and snail mails get sent out.

Regarding 'KTU's relevancy, they "left" as a dance station on September 9, 2006 with their current format known as "rhythmic A/C". In most cities the format is known as "Movin". 'KTU still plays freestyle because it covers that target audience (the 25-54 women) and to that, I can NEVER see 'KTU drop that genre of music totally because of those demographics. So in that sense, you and other freestyle artists aren't totally out of the picture.

I've posted about the show disappearing on the coalition blog and the feedback has been very good regarding Judy. Judy is a wonderful person. While what happened stinks, at least she's still on the station, especially given the fact that with the bad economy, radio has been on a tear laying off people.

With all due respect, if the movement (and this is my own opinion here and believe me it is to help and not hurt) is going to progress then it's time to bring about some new material to the table. Introduce it at Beatstock if you can. A movement can't sustain if a generation is kept stuck on the old. It won't allow a new generation to "breathe" in those sounds.

I AM being supportive here, believe it or not. You're on the "front line" as an artist to this music, so there are things that you can bring to this table and if it's going to help I want to hear it! 🙂 Doors are never shut with me.

To that, I hope the e-mails and snail mails can make a difference!

This station is probaly the furthest thing you can get from dance music....we all know all they play is the same repetive chezze hip pop/pop/r&b and the same handful of played out dance/disco/ freestyle songs.....and preety much no new dance music regardless whether it be dance/freestyle or whateve.....and the worst of it all ...r&b/hip pop songs with the same repetive cheeze dance beat they try to push off as dance music.

This is what FM radio has turned into in the last 17 years in NYC and preety much accoss the country....FM radio has turned to absoulete shit...and i doubt it will change...hip pop/r&b/pop thats all FM radio will play

dance music/Freestyle always gets the shaft......as always....

yet if u take a freestyle beat or a dance beat and have a pop/hip pop/r&b group singing over it ....radio will play it....but they wont play real dance music from real dance artist

I just saw Judy Torres this past thursday night at Roxy's. She is looking her best ever and her voice is still amazing. She sang "Please stay tonight" and "Love Story". Usually you don't get to hear those. She also sang her new song and by the end some of the females were already singing along to it.There were other artists there too. Some of the highlists:

Noel- This guy is something else. When he did his first song he was jumping from speaker to speaker that were set up in front of the stage! I like the fact that he sings all his songs in entirety.

George Lamond- I got to hear him sing "distant heart" which usually you dont hear at the shows. he led of with "don't stop believing" and everybody sang along. I usually hate remakes but GL is one of those singers that can sound good singing just about anything.I also got to hear him sing "si te vas" and he brought the house down! Noel was in the back of the stage dancing with some girl. Never knew Noel had some Salsa skills!

Body and style was in the club and did half of "Listen to my cries" on the spot.

Cynthia did a great show as always. What was weird about Roxy's is that they have a lounge area behind the stage. It was cool to see Cynthia and her hubby sitting there but there were way too many people around the whole area. What's worse is that they have the Paris Hilton type of attitude. It was somewhat distracting with all the commotion going on. The club only should have the artists and their people sit there.

TKA/K7 another great performance. Before they got on someone from Kayel's camp got the stage to clear out.Thank you! That needed to be done from the get go.I always like watching this group perform because they don't just sing they also put on a great routine for each song.My boy told me "they must really practce hard to put on such a great routine".Also, some girl threw her panties on stage when they were on lol.

This club was packed. 5 legendary acts 25 dollars. Can't beat that. Originally it was only Noel and Judy Torres booked. At the last minute the other three acts were added on. The only advertisement done was a commercial on Power 95.3 that play the day of the show. Still it was a pack crowd on a thursday night.

Next show will be Coro,Lisette and more to be added.

I almost forgot the best part of the show. TKA/K7.Judy Torres,Noel and GL signed autographs after the show and took pictures as well.

You can't, each act is only worth $5.
Someone at the higher level must have realized with outfits like La Radio employing amateur DJs to spin, I mean push MP3s, why they were wasting FCC sanctioned air waves on this now defunct music. I stopped listening to KTU (online as we're 90 miles out) when Johnny Budz left. All of the big ticket acts piggy backed off this show to their own end, and many still continue to flaunt their egos. This is a wake up call, Freestyle is Dead. The 12-Noon work outs will forever live in infamy.

what!?!? no concert photos?!!?🙁

Don't remind me. I still mad about forgetting my cam.😡

Cell phone pics won't do any justice to the artists.

I did see two camera guys recording the whole show. So someone has footage of the event.

I hear the concern and if Judy's show goes off the air, then I'll sorely miss it! I listen to this show on my drives on Sundays but mostly to gage how many folks are still out there listening live via the shouts and texts.

But we've been through this kind of stuff but in more dramatic fasion before. I mean, most all the dance stations in NYC played freestyle at one point or another. As they slowly got eaten up by hip hop and "R&B" made a lot of us just move on. Some to house, some to salsa and some just moved on.

But look at Freestyle's early days! Things really didn't change all that much. While we were hearing Cover Girls and Corina at Devil's Nest, what was playing on the radio at that time???? Definitley wasn't freestyle. The dance shows featured mostly uptempo R&B like Luther or Billy Ocean and then some funk and Garage where Frankie Crocker was rocking the black sound.

What I'm saying is that Freestyle made it to the top without the help of radio. This all happened through the party scene and world of mouth. I think us older heads have to, if this sound is to be saved, is to get into clubs ownership and party promotion. A regular spot that can hold a few hundred freaky freestylers on the weekends would do far more than KTU can. But I'll let you in on a little dirty secret, radio is in it for the money, nothing else. If some label or some other organization thinks they can get KTU's ratings high or the payola is coming in buckets, there's not much the fans can do but step back and stop supporting the station.

So yeah, let's call, write and email KTU and see where that gets us. But in case it doesn't work, there's always plan 'B'. We do have a "Plan B" don't we? LOL 😀

we need it. its still the #1 dance station. without it, freestyle will be lost. trust me. if its gone then consider seeing and hearing less artists and performances at clubs and venues.
