I wrote this editorial in Atomic Reaction's Freestyle Music Magazine, back in the November 1994 issue when I thought Freestyle was getting to monotonous.

I thought it still held up today almost 8 years later…

Because They Call It Freestyle
By Jason D. LaMonaca

Songs about love- the joy of love, loss of love or heartbreak. Use a "Planet Rock" mix, 32 beat intro, "verse, chorus verse, chorus, breakdown, bridge, chorus, chorus, outro." Solo artist, two-girl group, three-guy group. Use your first name, last name, abbreviate your name, change your name, use a group name when you are solo, use A.T.L. (any three letters.) Use rhyme- every other line, and don't forget the orchestra hits!

Because they call it Freestyle.

They don't have to be songs about love- the joy of love, loss of love or heartbreak. You don't have to use a "Planet Rock" mix, or a 32 beat intro. The song doesn't have to follow the same "verse, chorus verse, chorus, breakdown, bridge, chorus, chorus, outro" pattern. There doesn't even have to be a breakdown. Solo, duo, or trio… Like, where's the band? You don't have to change your name to sound good Forget rhyme! Leave out the orchestra hits!

Because they call it Freestyle.

Think of the word freestyle. Not Freestyle. The word freestyle. What does it mean? It brings to mind having no boundaries. No restrictions. You don't have to follow rules or guidelines that are carved in stone when it comes to making this music. You can do it any way you want.

Because they call it Freestyle.

But go ahead and use that "Planet Rock" sample if you want. Or be creative- why not sample a beat from an old Beastie Boys song? Or even better, forget the samples! Really be creative and come up with a killer beat your self. But you don't have to do that. And you don't have to listen to me. You can make whatever kind of songs you want.

Because they call it Freestyle.
