everyone has a point here. no freestyle will never be the same as it once was. It was at the top of it's glory at one point, but as all good things in life it didn't last forever. as fo rhiphop living on forever sure, it's always better to hear negatvie shit than positive things, 90% of hiphop and rap is about drugs, beat downs, hoes and swappin bitches. and it seems poeple like to relate to that better, go figure. as for being labeled a freestyle artist all your life..oh well shit happens, and ubfortunately if your being labeled why bother to try and hit another genre if your stereotyped already? does it make any sense,no, so we continue to give the fans thier freestyle sound even if only the ones on the website are the ones listening to it. Adnd if one of these hiphop artist put a freestyle artist to do a hook in on eof thier tracks, it would blow up. because to tell you the thruth alot of thse freestyle artist can do a hell of alot better than Ashanti!

Another thing, the quality of the music has simply gone down hill. Hip Hop is totally going to be around for ever. And why? Because Hip Hop is a market. Thousands of companies are cashing in because Hip Hop has a huge following. And why are these rappers so well-off? Because companies are supplying them with Burberry coats, Channel earrings, Fendi bags, Moet and Two-Ways. That's what all this shit comes down to. It's a business. It's ridiculous. Freestyle will never step up to the plate. Freestyle has nothing to offer. Why do you think Dance music has remained a powerful force in the music genre? Because it's constantly changing. Freestyle is still the same as it was back in 1986. I'm not bashing Freestyle at all. I'm just stating the obvious. I'd rather listen to the same Brenda K. song 15 times than give Eminem or 50 Cents a second of my time. Here you have ignorrant thugs, if you will, with record contracts and a hatred for "homo's" and "bithces" talking about shit that makes no sense. You would never see me buying any shit like that. So yeah, Freestyle is definitely my choice of music, next to Dance/House.

And dawg, if your gonna label someone as "Ignorant", at least spell it right. 😉

Guys!!!!

Lets chill!!

All you guys have great points. Fact is, Freestyle will never die!! True, Freestyle will never at the peak it once was, but; if The Music gets a little adjustment, it will be more successful. Hip Hop, pop and Light/AAA/Hot AC Rock will stay popular because of record company support, MTV, VH1, BET(all viacom companies) support. Even house don't have much support unless Beyonce wants a Thunderpuss mix of her solo work.

MARKLUVZCYNTHIA- Yo, I think I got my point across either way. So what if I spelled "one" word incorrectly. Also, I was referring to 50 and Eminem when I mentioned "ignorant thugs". You might want to re-look that post. And, not once did I mention ANYTHING about Hip-Hop being the reason for Freestyle's decline in popularity. I was simply comparing the two. By the way, could you please proof-read this for me? I don't want to miss-spell any words.

I think Freestyle dance music has evolved much like House music. I mean nowdays you can hear Breakbeat, Trance and Disco-House on dance radio. To me, Freestyle has evolved to Breakbeat and Electro but I don't think it can survive remaining old-school. Sad but true. I mean in the past few years Freestyle artists have had remixes on their singles which were either Breakbeat or Electro. It is rare to see Freestyle listed as a mix. I do hope it can make a comeback but I really am in doubt.

RoGoReM, I truly believe what you just wrote, it has evolved. Radio plays a lot of trance, breakbeat\trance, dance, whatever you want to call it. I'm lovin' it!

Carlito,
I wasn't trying to start beef. I'm not trying to spell-check or proof read your every post. My point was just that it looks kind of bad to call someone else ignorant when you can't even spell it right. And with the word you chose, you gotta admit, there's definitely some amusing irony there. I'm not trying to personally attack you dawg, just madd tired of people and their negative stereotypes.

But I think it's exactly what ChuckD posted. I can't say I remember a time when freestyle videos flooded television. It was more popular than it is today but it was always kind of underground the way I remember. That Soundscan info was interesting to read too because I always wondered what was the actual reason that freestyle got dropped from radio. I mean we all know it happened but I never knew what the actual reason was. It's madd messed up too.

WELL,

I JUST WANTED TO SHARE A LIL SOMTHING......ABOUT FRESTYLE SOMEDAY COMING BACK IN POP RADIO AND ALL THAT...
I WAS JUST LISTENING TO 93.1 IN MIAMI AND THET PLAYED THIS AWSOME new SONG THAT IS NOW ON ROTATION....
TO BE STR8 UP FORWARD it is a early 80'S styled freestylish/r&b RECORD....IN THE TRADITION OF "CRASH gOSE LOVE", "jUST BE GOOD TO ME", "iN mY hOUSE" (BY MARY JANE GIRLS), "i LIKE YOU" BY PHYLIS (I FORGOT HER LAST NAME, ETC....

BUT ANYWAY...WHAT SURPRISED ME IS THAT THIS "nEW" OLD STYLED RECORD IS ACTUALLY THE pOUL oKENFOLD REMIX OS justin timberlak'ES "rOCK yOUR bODY".

SO ADD THIS TO THE LIST OF OTHER EARLY 80'SH DRIVEN RECORDS ALONG SIDE OTHER BREAK RECORDS LIKE PIMP SMAKERS "GATES OF OPEN MIND", AMUNG MANY.....THE FREESTYLE SOUND IS DEFINETLEY BECOMING MORE AND MORE CUTTING EDGE AT POP CULTURE AND RADIO. BEFORE YOU KNOW IT , PEOPLE WILL HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO RECOGNIZE WHATS REALLY GOING ON AND OUR PAST WILL BE RECOGNIZED AS WELL.
EARLY 80'S FREESTYLE WAS SO DIVERSE THAT EVEN TODAYS YOUNGER CROWD WILL HAVE A HARD TIME TRYING TO UNDERTAND THAT THERE WERE MANY BEATS AND SIDES TO THE GENRE THAT OVERLAPED EACH OTHER.

SO IN DUE TIME IT WILL ALL BE RE TOUGHT AND THE DOOR FOR THE NEW FREESTYLE GENERATION OF ARTIST WILL OPEN MORE NOW THAN IT WAS A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO.

REMEMBER, WITHIN ALL THIS EARLY 80'S REVIVAL true early 80'S DANCE MUSIC IS THAT OF freestyle.EITHER ON THE ELECTRO SIDE OR LEANING TO R&B OR WHATEVER...ALL 80'S DANCE GROOVES WERE DRIVEN BY FREESTYLE HARMONIES, BASSLINES, SYNTHS AND OVER LAPED OVER MANY GENRES.
UNFORTUINATLEY AT THE TIME IT WAS JUST CALLED DANCE MUSIC. BUT AT LEAST TODAY WE CAN BE SPICIFIC TO identify NOT ONLY THE SOUNDS..BUT THE CORNER STONE THAT GAVE FALVOR TO THAT PART OF THAT ERA.

ITS ALL IN OUR 21 YEAR OLD HISTORY.

THINGS WILL HAPPEN EVENTUALLY, BUT IN THE MEANTIME PEEPS HAVE TO KEEP AN OPEN MIND AND KEEP THIER HEADS UP AND CONTINUE TO SUPORT NOT ONLY FREESTYLE ARTIST..BUT ALL ARTIST THAT ARE ON RADIO UTILIZING THE FREESTYLE SOUND. NO MATTER WHATS SIDES OF FREESTYLE..ELECTRO.R&BISH, LATIN, TRADITIONAL, BREAKS ETC.

BELEIVE ME...RADIO DOESNT KNOW THE SOUND....YOU HAVE TO TEACH THEM. TO THEM ITS JUST POP MUSIC..CUZ ITS POPULAR AT THIS TIME.
AND TO TELL THE TRUTH...ANYTHING EARLY 80'S ELECTRO /FREESTYLISH/DANCE BEAT IS HOT.

(IF ROBBINS WERE TO RE-RELEASE "MEMORIES" BY JACI CANCI RIGHT NOW WITH SOME REMIXES...omg!!!)

ALSO..NAYA...YOUR BACK ON ROTATION "noW AND FOREVER" IS PLAYING ON PARTY 93.1, ALONG SIDE OTHER FRESTYLE AND EARLY 80'S RECORDS.

BELEIVE ME PEOPLE..SOMETHING WILL HAPPEN FOR THE FREESTYLE SOUND SOON. THE DOORS WILL OPPEN.
BUT YOU AS ARTIST AND PROMOTERS,VOCALIST, PRODUCERS ETCLABELS ALL HAVE TO BE PREPARED. ALL HAVE TO WORK TOGETHER ALL HAVE TO INFORM EACH OTHER OF EVENTS TAKING PLACE IN A GLOBAL SCALE.

IF WE DONT WORK TOGETHER AND UNIFY AND KEEP EACH OTHER ON A CUTTING EDGE...THE NEXT WAVE OF FREESTYLE MOVMENTS WILL FLY RIGHT OVER THE WHOLE COMMUNITY AS THE TRIP HOP PHASE DID, AS THE ELECTRO BREAKS PHASE DID, AS THE ELECTRO CLASH MOVMENST IS...STILL THIS IS ALL STUFF THAT FREESTYLES COMMUNITY COULD SO EASLEY DO..BUT JUST SITS BACK AND WATCHES.

ALL THESE WAVES..IT IS A FREESTYLE SOUND. ITS THE NEW FREESTYLE...BUT THE DIFERENCE IS THAT THE FREESTYLE COMMUNITY IS THE RIGHTFUL INHERITERS..ITS THE SOUND OF YOUR CLUB AND STREET CULTURE AND ITS TIME TO CLAIM IT BACK.

THE STYLE IS IN RIGHT NOW. THE SOUND IS ALL SO HOT IN EVERY CLUB AND MIX SHOW, BUT THE SOUL OF THE COMMUNITY AND THE CRIES OF THE MOVMENT WILL BE HEARD ONCE MORE, BRINGING JOY TO BOTH NEW AND CLASSIC GENERATIONS AND FEAR AND HUMILIATION TO THOSE NAY SAYAERS.

the FREESTYLE sound is creeping up behind everyone.
and this time not only in the hands of new generations of artist....
but a whole new generation of INDUSTRY behind the new movement .

I will try to make this short and sweet. What people need to understand is that Classic Disco was a form of dance music. Then young Hispanic producers changed the sounds to become what was called LatinHip Hop.That then became Fresstyle. Then other producers changed the style again, and this became House, then Trance,Techno and every other name they call a form of dance music. What I am trying to say is that, the base of ALL of it is Dance music. Some become Popular hense "POP".Someone mentioned Jennifer Lopez.Jennifer was raised on and loves Freestyle music.Mariah Carey sang Freestyle music(Brenda K Starr),Marc Anthony sang Frestyle Music,Anastacia sang Freestyle music.People and music grow. All these great artist are on MTV,BET, and have sold millions of records. They are not singing Freestyle songs now,but they are singing a Changed and MODERN style Dance Music. I agree with most that freestyle when listened to today may sound wack to people who did`nt live through those days, but how many adults who loved a movie as a kid watches it now and see how aweful it as made.Like Hollywwod with green screens and effects.Music has grown also making for better quality material.Freestyle has had a great era, with great music and great memories for all who lived it.They did sing about the same thing (true) ,but they sang about what any great song or story really is about LOVE>

Things will come in circles, Dance(Freestyle and House) will still be around, and alway stay around with dance fans like ourselves.. The truth is, dance music period is getting screwed. The deal is; Radio is corperate. The are 5 big companies; Clear Channel, Infinity, Cox, Radio One(based here in DC), Disney/ABC. All these stations want to play stuff they think will make them money. Radio has never really been about what listeners really want. It's what they think you want to hear. Truth is; PD's at Clear Channel Top 40 stations want you to listen to Ashanti 500x a day.In their minds she will make a the stations money to them not Lil Suzy or Iio.

This is a dead subject guys. Freestyle is fun music whether it explodes or not, whether its called freestyle, latin hiphop, dance music, techno, whatever. I play freestyle in my car and it makes me happy.

Instead of denouncing it because others try to, support it completely. Talk to your friends about it, play it in your cars, play it at clubs if your a dj. Just do your part and feel good about it.

have a nice day

Simon
