I had the opportunity to purchase a copy of Nick Colon's limited edition EP, titled: FOR THE FANS when I saw him at the "Nu Phaze In Freestyle 2002" show in Easton, PA over the weekend.
First let me start by saying that it was a pleasure meeting Nick. He put on an amazing performance and I now see what all of the hype is about! Nick has an excellent voice and is truly gifted...

1. "CARELESS" - A great New School Freestyle track. Nick captures the essence of the Old School sound with his vocals. The music tries to remain true to Old School formula (complete with edits) while adding just a touch of Freestyle progression.
2. "NEVER BE THE SAME" - A revised version of the Progressive Freestyle track that first appeared on the D.O.S Records compilation, FREESTYLE: THE NEXT LEVEL. Although it follows the typical Progressive/West Coast Freestyle sound, the song is still not a bad effort. Fans of this type of Freestyle are sure to love it.
3. "IN THE AIR" - An admirable Progressive Freestyle remake of the Phil Collins classic. While I did not like overly electronic music, Nick's vocals are the true saviour of this track. He was able to take Phil Collins' song and make it into his own.
4. SO IN LOVE (featuring Cynthia Sejo) - Another Progressive/West Coast Freestyle influenced track. Nick and Cynthia seem to work very well together. It is no secret that I am not a fan of the Progressive/West Coast sound in general. In that respect the music is average, but it is vocal abilities of both Nick & Cynthia that makes this track really come together.
5. "RELEASE ME" - When I first heard this song on the Artistik Records compilation FREESTYLE PARADE 2K1 (CD#1) last year, I thought it was average for New School Freestyle. After listening to again on this EP, I have noticed that there is more to this song than my original impression. Willie Valentin did a nice job on the production and Nick Colon delivered some great vocals. They work well together. I hope that Nick & Willie can collaborate on another project in the future.
6. "BELIEVE" - Nick's breakthrough debut song, originally featured on the D.O.S. Records compilation FREESTYLE: THE NEXT LEVEL. Again, when I first heard this song on the D.O.S. compilation, I failed to see what all of the hype was about. I listened to the song, and I thought to myself, "this song is just average at best". After hearing it again on this EP, I really sat down and listened to Nick's vocals. I was truly impressed with what I heard. I was able to hear the passion for Freestyle in Nick's vocals and I was to feel his emotion. This is something I have not felt from any Freestyle artists other than George LaMond and Judy Torres!!!
7. "SOLEMN TEARS" - A nice blend of Old School, New School and Progressive Freestyle. This was a great way to end a very nicely put together EP.
Nick has true talent and if this EP is just a taste of what his full length album "BELIEVE" has in store for us later this year, I am really looking forward to it's release.
My recommendation to anyone reading this review is to treat yourself to some great new music - buy a copy of "FOR THE FANS" by Nick Colon!
