why is it that only freestyle singers ..many of them have to put in front of thier names the title "RECORDING ARTIST" i mean you dont see it in any other type of music do you?? like rappers or r&B singers its not RECORDING ARTIST prince or RECORDING ARTIST p diddy.. RECORDING ARTIST metallica..its like me being at work and saying hi my name is RETAIL SALES REPRESENTATIVE Javi..if your singing something its pretty clear that you recorded something in a studio..believe it or not alot of people who listen to freestyle are smart and we can actually distinguish who is a singer without it being spelled out for us... oh wait i hear the garbage truck outside..some of the "SANITATION SPECIALIST" must be coming to get the garbage...

well I am not really a freestyle singer, but "Recording Artist" is a general music industry term - it means that you are a professional singer who has a recording contract with a label. I am a professional recording artist, and I have that term on my profile (and on my website it's actually "International Recording Artist", because my records have been distrubuted worldwide from the US to Japan), but I don't walk around town with a T-shirt that says "Recording Artist" on it LOL......A singer who is trying to make it in the industry is really an aspiring artist - you aren't technically a professional recording artist until you have a record deal and have been paid by someone to actually record. Also, the way that singers are introduced in dance clubs when they perform is "Liquid Music Recording Artist Damian Wild" or whatever - it is a plug for the singer and the label. I have just seen dance artists referred to that way for as long as I can remember, probably because the general public does not know what a "Giggles" or an "Arlene" looks like - A Madonna, Michael Jackson and Prince have so much money behind them that the words "recording artist" would be ridiculous!!

That is true Damian. It allows people to know who they are, and what their aspirations are.

well i can see that but the music they put out should do that for them.just like i am an artist..i dont label my work like that..i dont do a painting or a drawing then sign it as javi "professional painting guy" or drawn by javi "pencilist" i dont make a graphic design and label it "taezee graphic artist extrodinare"I put my work out to be seen or sold and my name starts to get recognition buy my work....another thing is the term is used so loosely it loses value .. there are so many self proclaimed "recording artist " out there yet most of them suck so bad they would have been cut from the very first round of american idol..

Well Taezee I agree with a lot of what you said but the fact is that the phrase "recording artist" is a standard music industry term. The fact that similar phrases are not used in other professions has nothing to do with it - however, in the acting industry, you VERY OFTEN see "Comedian Jerry Seinfeld" or "Actress Meryl Streep" in magazines or said by announcers on tv shows ALL THE TIME. That is just how professionals in the entertainment industry are referred to. The entertainment industry is a completely different thing that being a house painter or a barista at Starbucks. You are 100% right when you say that self proclaimed recording artists are not really recording artists....as I said, you are not a TRUE recording artist until you are a professional.

Actually, I HAVE seen it in other genres too.
Usually in the same title with the record label though.
Example: "Arista recording artist MONICA"
or "Warner Brothers recording artist, LINKIN PARK".

But this is usually used when artists & groups are first starting out.
After establishing a name for themselves, u rarely see the title used anymore. 🙂
