Just out of curiosity....

Do people here generally prefer the Miami, more electro-sounding freestyle (i.e. Debbie Deb, Meg, etc...) or the New York sound?

For some reason lately I tend to be listening more to the Miami sound...but then again I tend to swing back and forth at any given moment.

Just wondering, ya'll 😉
 
both. i do like the funky miami sound, the trinere, the expose, the debbie deb, some nice beats there. and the new york sound is very nice with its sad-sounding lyrics. theyre both very good forms of freestyle
 
I like a lot of the classic shit myself, circa 1984-1988. I was constantly back and forth from New York to Miami, and I was hearing shit that wasn't even being played simultaneously in both cities. Either New York was blowing it up first, or Miami was. And Miami was hot! I def. love the Debbie Deb & Trinere sound. But then again, I love the classic New York sound (Nayobe, Sweet Sensation, Judy Torres). I hate to catergorize it, because now that I think back, "Show Me" was HUGE down in South Florida. Then I'd come up to the Bronx and hear that joint being played at house parties and what not.

The West Coast ripped it with Angelina, Lina Santiago, Lina Lares, and Katalina and boy let me tell you- all those hits made it to Boston and NY and put Cali. on the map. That was the "new" sound of Freestyle. Speaker's were bumpin' in almost every club I went to. Both Angelina and Lina established themselves, and they did it well.
 
I like both also. I just wish the "Planet Rock" beat would stop being used so much. Miami tends to use it more than NYC. Some songs sound good with it, i just think it's just been overused.
 
carlito, when you said boston, did you mean in the clubs or on the radio? i go to school in that area, and the only station i know of that plays freestyle is star 93.7...they have been known to play sweet sensation, noel, and a few others on occasion, but i dont think its a regular thing? i dont really listen to radio that much up here (just one subpar rap station that plays the same stuff over and again) and not being a club person myself (i am terribly shy and im a horrible dancer), i'd be thrilled if you did indeed mean that freestyle cuts get frequent airplay up here 🙂

also for those who are in/frequent nyc, i was lucky enough to to hear wktu and listen to a few of their mixes (doesnt judy torres host a show? ). unfortunately i only get to that area a few times a year and never get a chance to really listen. it sounded like they mostly play old school, and i didnt really hear much miami freestyle. is this pretty much true? also, if so, do ya'll think they should play more new school, you know, to expose more people to new artists or whatever?
 
Ive always likes the New York sound over the miami one cuz i found the miami was too generic after awhile..Everyone was using the same beat, words and even the voices started to sound alike..I found the NY sound more darker, creative and original, like Corina, India, Coro, George Lamond, Lisette Melendez..Lately ive been listening more to the techno side (all still from NYC) like KHZ-Open me, Always on my mind (lead singer former freestyler Raiana Paige) as well as Dynamix featuring Betty..India Seduce me..it may not be 100% freestyle..but its still freestyle in vocals..

Well I was referring to 1995/1996. But, Star 93.7 fm does play a lot of the old-skool Freestyle in a lot of their mix-shows, Sunday classics, and during the day. They've actually been playing a lot more, and they almost always have concerts or shows that feature Freestyle artists such as Shannon, Stevie B, and many others. Also, a lot of the clubs in the Boston area have Freestyle concerts. I've been to quite a few. Send me an e-mail and if I hear anything I'll let you know.
 
hmmm........ i dunno how to tell what is what. but i like stuff like In Paradise,Praying for an Angel, Change On Me and George Lamond's songs..... what kind are they??

Laissez Faire, Cynthia, and GL are all New York. Rochelle may also be from New York but I'm not sure. Her sound is definitely NY though.
 
I respect the New York sound as it's the one that's primarily used for classic stuff, but my taste tend to lean towards the Chicago beats with their rythmic bass lines. Also, for some of the new school, I've liked what I heard out of Canada and Jersey.
