Do you think a place of business or school should tell you to only speak English? In the school I go to the director has told every Spanish speaking person we can NOT speak it because it is rude to other people there. I think that if I'm speaking to my friends and we are all Latin we should be able to speak in Spanish. What are your thoughts on this?

Girl I've had issues with this when I used to work. I had friends that are mexican and only speak spanish. Well they speak very little english and my supervisor used to pick on them and tell them "english". I used to flip on him and tell him that is our language and 2nd of all they were speaking to me. Not him! He said it was rude. I asked "to who? YOU?" I can't stand that. Chinese people speak their language in front of everybody and they don't give a damn what you say about them. So I totally disagree with these A-holes that try to make a point and tell a hispanic that they can't speak their own language.

No one should tell you what language to speak whatsoever. I don't give a shit if it's in the classroom, on the job, or on the bus. What gives them the right to tell you to speak only English? Just because their lazy asses don't wanna pick up a phucking book and try to master another language does't mean you can't use yours.

I think you should report that a*****e and tell him that if he feels outta the "loop", you'll happily give him Spanish-speaking lessons for a small fee. What kinda shit is that.

I speak Spanish when and where I choose to. And a man in his position should be more open to variations in language.

That's what our director says that it's rude. Yesterday one of the student's called the news on them and one of the councilmen is getting involved. If he does not want to hear us talk it then he should not be trying to hear what we are talking about.

see that's because they are not in a spanish speaking country! imagine that same director in our homes or countries, and he decides he's gonna speak english, and everywhere he goes they tell him to speak spanish, because speaking english is rude to everyone around him, I can guarantee you that he would not be a happy camper whatsoever! America is so full of different cultures and ethnicities, that to speak only english is just so backwards..lol I mean seriously. Glad that your councilman is getting involved in this matter, because it should be thier perogative to speak whatever language they feel like speaking when speaking to same language co-workers. He's just nosy and wants to know what all that fast talking is about!..LOLOL

Yeah, plus some people feel comfortable speaking in their native language, such as Spanish.

I feel more comfortable speaking English, but when I'm bullshit and wanna piss someone off, it's all Spanish baby! Spanish!

Plus, for some reason whenever I'm cooking Arroz con Abichuelas, Chuletas con Tostones, I feel like I've been possessed by Goya or some shit 'cus I'm on the phone with my moms talkin' Spanish as if I invented the language! Y sabes que.........

I know he cant tell us what to speak but he says he owns the school and it's not changing the rules. As for me I will continue to speak what I want when I want and he has a problem with it he will have to sign me out or kick me out of his school

Tell mofo to go fuk himself. Ask him if the school has a policy that students cannot speak anything other than English. I'm sure he'll say, "The school doesn't have a policy, it's just rude". Right than and there you tell the mofo, "Sorry that you're feel insecure and offended, but i feel that i can communicate better with my peers if i speak Spanish". That will shut him up quick. He can ask you to stop talking Spanish, but he can't make you. Get your concilmen involved, when the head of the school sees the bad press, that director of yours is gonna get a nice warning from the school head.

Tell him Psycho said que se valla a la mierda!!

From EEOC site.

III. What Other Practices Are Discriminatory Under These Laws?
Title VII
Title VII prohibits not only intentional discrimination, but also practices that have the effect of discriminating against individuals because of their race, color, national origin, religion, or sex.

National Origin Discrimination
It is illegal to discriminate against an individual because of birthplace, ancestry, culture, or linguistic characteristics common to a specific ethnic group.
A rule requiring that employees speak only English on the job may violate Title VII unless an employer shows that the requirement is necessary for conducting business. If the employer believes such a rule is necessary, employees must be informed when English is required and the consequences for violating the rule.
