Problem With Freestyle In General...

Once again one of the problems with Freestyle is people like to talk but nobody likes to do. I go back to a post that I put up maybe a month ago that asked, "What are you doing for freestyle?" Most people had the standard answers and that's cool. But what gets people to take action? That's what's needed here. I tell you that you may hear a record that you think is the greatest thing since TKA but unless it is going to make some noise in the clubs (Limited choice nowadays) or at retail (better shot than the clubs) then you have virtually no shot at hearing that record on the air. The exception to that is of course, the mix shows. You can still find guys that will support the music on this level. I would suggest to Jack G, if he's reading this, maybe to start a section of the site dedicated to stores that support the music, to mixers that support the music or anything else that helps spread the passion that a lot of people on this site have for the music. Maybe it'll have just the address and phone numbers for the stores or the station addresses to send stuff to the mixers. I think that if you knock of the negativity about what happened in the past or who did what to who and focus on making things better you'd get further with your efforts.

Also to clarify a previous post about KTU & money, I'm the guy that takes the Robbins Entertainment records up to WKTU every Thursday and sits in the lobby with 10 to 15 other reps from different labels. All waiting to get in to see Geronimo or Jeff or Frankie. I'll say this one time, we have had great success in our partnership with KTU not because of anything other than Relationships and having the right records for KTU at the right time for them.

Not once has money ever been involved or been an issue. And for ANYONE to say different, then that person is a fool.

Thanks,

John Parker

Ok *Ahem Ahem*
In My View,This Has Been Said Before I Think, When Freestyle Events And Concerts Are Organized What Do You See. Maybe Out Of All Of Em there Will Be 5 Teenagers And The Rest are A Bunch Of Old Dudes With Beer Belly's Reminicing. Back In The Days You Had The Whole Club Jam Packed With Kids Loving Freestyle. Kids Outside Dancing In The Street 2 Thier Car Systems Pumpin Freestyle. Now? You'll Be Lucky If You Find 1 Kid In The Street Even Considering Pumping It.

That is interesting considering the opposite was true in S. Jersey. If you went to any of the Tazmania shows or weekly performances from Tazmania artist at the Iguana, Metropolis, Milkbar, Outter Limits. The place was full of teens and maybe 20 older people with 10 beer belly's (I am 1 of the beer belly's). The club owners did not make a profit from soda sales and couldn't survive on 20 of age drinkers. Then to top it off all the above clubs mentioned pretty much died due to all the f'ing fighting the teenage males start. So Jack will struggle getting a teenage party together. Teenage males going to see the girls are the problem considering the majority of them have no idea who is on stage and what freestyle is. Nor do i think they ever cared.

It seemed to me. even years ago when I was a teenager, I partook in these freestyle events and concerts at local clubs and venues, and they seemed to be a huge success. Promoting the event is a key start to rounding up the people to your event. Also part-in-parcel club management have to be co-operative and willing to hire more security , more security = less male testosterone fortitude, a strict dress code ( nobody wants slobs or gang colours showing up ahhhh) . So yeah, all we could do is drink pop & juice all night long but oh well, I remember most venues had a seperate area for legal age drinkers. It's all in the 6 "p's" folks -------> Proper Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance.😀

Freestyles still far from being dead but lets say its on life support

heres the problem with freestyle

theres alot of garbage being put out & promoted now a days. Just look at Tony Monacos Freestyle Frenzy, alot of it is crap. He even considers that new Wyclef song "great Freestyle". and yes the same emotions and dedication is not being put into new freestyle as it was with classic freestyle. In classic freestyle songs u get this warm feeling when u hear it & u can hear the emotions coming out of the vocals. New Freestyle artists aren't really being promoted properly either & the radio stations unwillingness to play new music means that the younger generations don't get a chance to absorb the great classics & find out about new freestyle bombs but instead get bombarded with the same boy band & hip hop crap that the radio stations repeatedly play. Money is what talks, do the record labels wanna throw money to promote their freestyle artists??? NO!!! the only way most new artists & songs are discovered by fans are through word of mouth & internet promtions which are not very effective advertising methods. some artists may start out freestyle artists but then eventually go to latino or pop music to make money and thats what really matters to everyone. enough repects though to those that have stayed freestylers. and no freestyle is still alive but has been driven underground by the mainstream media & the radio stations. I never am ashamed of pumpin a great freestyle song when i'm cruisin the streets and never will be.

Victor,

Please go back and re-read what I said. I was talking about WKTU & the exchange of money for airplay. It has NEVER happened with this label and that station as somebody had eluded to in an earlier post. I'm saying that if you believe that it has happened you are indeed very misinformed. I've been doing promotion since 1989 and was in radio before that. I know of every game that's out there and have even invented a few. But it really pisses me off when people make unfounded arguments about things that they think they know. You'll never hear me say that there aren't some truths about what you or Elear say about promotions but I wanted to make it very clear that Robbins was/is able to get records on WKTU and other stations because we deliver the types of quality music that they are looking for and not because somebody opened the purse strings. Anybody that knows me knows that I don't talk crap and I'm a straight shooter.

Here's one for you or anyone else that thinks you can just go up there and pay for radio play to think about. If it was that easy, don't you think that we would have been able to get "Thinking About you" or "I Never Said" by Cynthia on the air there? Or how about the new Rockell single? Or what about other labels that fight every week to get their records on. Don't you think that Virgin would have brought a spot for the Mariah Carey Record? How much is that worth? Notice they aren't playing it? WHy not? Personally, I think it's because the record isn't that great.

I'll just sum this up by saying that if you don't have any facts about this label or our artists please do not assume. Feel free to ask me. Here's my e-mail address: jparker@robbinsent.com

hey!

Hey Jparker,

you guys did a helluva job on Rockell's album.I heard a little bit last night at on a college station here in CT. Great work!!!...... have you heard from J. Fine? how's he doin?

take care!

Victor,

Again I think that you are reading things that haven't been said. Let me try to point out some of those things and then I'll attempt to answer your questions.

1) "But you can't tell me that money exchanges between lables and radio stations don't exist. "

I don't believe that I said that. And if I did please point it out to me. If you'd like to read an article on the supposed payola scams that are currently being investigated I suggest you head over to www.salon.com where they have been running a series of articles on the subject.

2) "As far as the talking about something I have no knowledge of, well I can't speak for Elear because he is an aspiring artist so he knows about the business today than I do. I am a music fan. "

Here, I have no problem with you speaking about what ever it is you wish but I was referring to the fact that "people" are speaking on the Subject of what goes on at Robbins and of that, I know that you or whoever have no knowledge of. I'm sure you are very knowledgable on many matters but my problem, again, is when somebody talks about this label and suggests that we are using money to gain favors at radio stations. Because that simply isn' the truth.

3) "I do not like at all for someone to tell me that what I say isn't fact when I have seen it and been involved in it."

I'm not telling you that what you say is or isn't fact. But you are talking about an industry wide thing and I'm just saying that my comments are directed to anyone that implies that we are involved in that. If your not implying that then I send my apoligies. But if you or anyone says that Robbins is involved in that, then I have to believe that you don't know what your talking about because it isn't factual.

4) "And I say once again, you are kidding me if you think that the junk KTU plays on a daily basis is of good quality. "

I think that I understand the radio station. This station is interest in a certain demographic (as all stations are). I think that they serve that demographic remarkably well. A lot of people think that KTU should be what they want them to be. THis same argument goes on with the people that like House Music and the people that like Trance and so on and so on. They hate KTU because they don't play enough House or Trance or whatever. I think that when you accept them for what they are you'll either like or hate them. It's your choice. But I believe that their ratings will do the talking for them. And by the way, some of that "junk" is mine.

Questions:

1) "Why weren't the two Cynthia singles, the new Rockell singles, and Victoria Angeles from 4 years ago weren't played on KTU?"

The new Rockell single, "What U Did 2 Me" is still very much alive at KTU. As for the Cynthia singles, to me that to this day is very puzzling. I was very much under the impression from the former MD that "Thinking About You" was going to be added. She was coming off a #1 record at the station. Too this day I still don't know what happened. It's also one of the most embarresing situations that I've ever been in because I told Cynthia that it was going in. "I Never Said" never proved itself to be a hit record for KTU to even look at on any level. And Victoria Angeles was in the same boat. 99% of the songs that KTU will add or take a chance on are proven hits at some level. Be it retail or mix show or clubs or other radio stations.

2) "Another song that boggles my mind from Robbins was Crush-Jellyhead from a few years ago. The song was fantastic. It was a hit everywhere accept one market, New York. Why didn't KTU take advantage of that song? "

Actually it was a very big New York Market hit. It just wasn't a hit at KTU. Z100 banged that record for months and months. At the time, again the former music director felt that the sound of that record was too rock leaning. Even though it was done by the same remixer and had a similar sound to another track out at the same time, "Ooh Ahh Just a Little Bit" by Gina G, that they were playing.

Again if anyone has questions feel free to e-mail me. Anything else reguarding the above subjects or if anyone feels that I've attacked or misunderstood them, e-mail me. We can handle it without adding to the tension levels that these boards sometime see.

Have a great weekend everyone.
