In Your Honest Oppinion, Just how important are Freestyle Vocals to you?
I mean if the beats are just mind blowing...........and I mean vertually Timeless. Do you keep listning to the CD? If the Singer is just average.....a Beginner?

I ask because I personally Fell in love with freestyle music because of the dope beats, the production. And the best singer on shitty beats means nothing to me, But OK vocals on a sick beat can satisfy me......Freinds of mind dont agree. Please Keep in mind, Im not talking about off key / horrible vocals......just not your avverage.......Please respond with your oppinion. 🙂

One should compliment the other but there are some older songs that don't have the best vocals but I still listen to the song cuz the beat is off the chain. :lol

Please Keep in Mind, I dont expect any one to Go crazy over a singer who plain out sucks. Cant hit keys, off tune, voice dont match the beat, etc.

But a Beginner...some one whos just ok, nothing special, far from George Lamond, TKA, Cynthia, and Steavie B..........but some one whos beginning and doing ok.

How do you feel???

Different Strokes for Different folks, If the freestyle has a powerful meaning and gets the point across with the message its trying to portray, and most dedicated freestyle listeners feel it! Then the artist did its job to most of its fans, but in my opinion most audience who don't know jack about freestyle music would be quickly to criticize MOST vocals and a vast majority of the production. I think this is due to the fact of lacking knowledge of the backround of the freestyle music which boils down to the budget of the project , not to mention the history of the backround vocals/education the artist itself derived from its career. Freestyle started in the ghetto's, (and I'm not necessarily calling it ghetto music) but it divided itself between commerical and underground. In my opinion both vocals and production must have a strong impact in order for me to like it.

cool question!!!!! :yeey i basically agree..... as long as the beat is slammin, then the vox doesn't have to be perfect, it can't suck tho, it has to be better than decent & have some singable catchy hooks..... 🙂 on the other hand if u have the worlds best vox and a crappy beat, it wouldn't work, u might as well have that vox over a country track.... :heee

I Agree 100% ..........Any One Else? Whats your feelings on "PERFECT VOCALS" ??

Vocals are not that important to me with freestyle music. Some of my favorite freestyle songs have some undeniably, awful vocals. Freestyle and Electro are mostly about beats to me. Good vocals never hurt tho. lol

I must say that if they beat is unbelievably good and I just cannot get over it then I hear bad vocals kick in, the first thing that comes to mind is that I will somehow make it possibleo make an instrumental with it, and if I have too much trouble with it or just can't get to do what I wanted with it, then I eventually just don't bother with it and forget about it. For example..... never mind, I think it's better that I just leave out the example. I'll just say that there is this song on my Promo Only c.d. that had a good beat, but I hated the vocals. I first thought about making an instrumental, but I didn't feel like it so I just thought "the hell with that song" and I just don't play it. ALL THE SONGS I LIKE HAVE TO BE GOOD AND HAVE GOOD QUALITY. The reason for not liking it should be any reason other than the fact that the person cannot sing. I also like to feel the vocals, and I like when the vocals ride with the music or give it that extra rhythm or feel to it. If they know they can't sing or whoever put the c.d. together knows that the singing is horrible, then they need to do what Eiffil 65 did and change their voice. I also hate it when the vocals sound wack or they try to make it sound too "pop-ish" - I just leave all that out now - unless it's undeniably a hit and is very big in clubs and has a beat that is so tight that nobody knows what to do. Now, there are many artists that I have that have very nice beats and I wish they would make an album, but their voice is very... "unique" to me, but somehow the way they did it makes it sound o.k. Also, I try to picture it with another type of music and think about how it would sound if it were put to trance, house, etc and make sure that it's not the beat or rhythm making it sound worse than it really is. There are many freestyle songs that sound wack, but if they were trance songs I bet they would sound a lot more different and less wack - just because WE ALL KNOW that trance is still kind of big. You also must remember that a lot of what we think and how we think is influenced by everybody else because we are all trying to fit in and have a style to be accepted by others. Because freestyle isn't the cool thing right now and it's not popular, every little thing that's wrong with a freestyle song is highly noticed a lot more - for example, I'm pretty sure if pop were suffering like freestyle is right now, those same artists like Jessica Simpson would be criticized very badly and thought of as very wack and bad vocals, and because the pop style was out, any pop sounding beat would just make it worse, but because most people see her as popular, they ignore the fact that the vocals aren't all that and pay more attention to other good details to satisfy themselves with the hot album of the week/month...etc. It's almost like we have "selective hearing". But as for me, I don't discriminate. If the vocals are bad IN ANY SONG, it gets the same treatment - I just leave it alone and get over how much I like the beat. There has not been one moment yet that I heard a song with bad vocals but the beat was so good that I didn't care about the vocals and still liked it, unless it was a song that they knew they couldn't sing, so when their turn in the song came up they just talked, but talked in such a way that it went with the beat - but not rapping. Women are much more better at doing freestyle songs than men, and I say this because I've noticed that there is an incredible amount of male vocals that sound horrible. I'm not sure specifically to what extent of poor quality vocals you are reffering too, but first of all, I do not like kid or child vocals when it comes to freestyle music, so something like Fannypack (which I had in mind as one of my previous examples) just wouldn't do. I don't know how else to describe it. A lot of the songs I could use for examples are on certain compilations, but I don't just want to call them out like that! I'll just say I'm pretty sure that if freestyle were all over the charts, all over top 40 radio, T.R.L., NOW! this is what I call music compilations....etc., half of those songs we think have bad vocals we wouldn't even notice anything wrong because EVERYONE ELSE says it's hot and EVERYONE ELSE is buying it...

There are some people like Sharyn Maceren, Ashley, Amber, and Angelina that can flow over almost anything and make it sound good, then there are others that just shouldn't sing, they could do news talk, design the red and yellow lines on Mc Donald's straws, or make a movie like "the day after tomorrow", but just do anything other than sing.

I think quality over quantity is important. If you're going to sing a crappy song on a tight beat, what's the use? What's the use if you're going to sing beautifully on a wacked-out tune? This is one of the reasons why Freestyle music virtually collapsed and why it's stereotyped the way it is (just as Dance music in general). To make a song and to get it heard costs mucho $ and time, but you can still find the most creative things in small packages. Also, if you're going to do a song, put some passion and emotion into it so that your audience can feel it. Try Synthia Figueroa's "You Were Meant for Me" or Judy Torres' "Back in Your Arms" for example. All I'm saying is that if you're going to sing in general, sing over a decent beat and with decent vocals. You don't have to be the next Aretha Franklin or Whitney Houston, but try to create a good, lasting song. Vocals are very important once again. James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, etc. have ensured the stay of R&B/Soul Music, for instance, and each have had successful careers.

well lots of other non-freestyle songs have good vocals and stupid beats, no one listens to that. just look at the american idol people. same with freestyle, it's the beat which can make a song sound good. can anyone imagine debbie deb - WHEN I HEAR MUSIC as an a-capella or a ballad? it's the beat which makes songs like these good tho they have nasty vocals.
actually i've never heard a freestyle song with good vocals and a bad beat, it's always been good vocals good beat or bad vocals good beat (or bad vocals bad beat). point being, with freestyle you cant just rely on a good voice to make a good song. thats the way i've seen it work.
so to answer the original question, vocal quality would be helpful in a freestyle song because thats often a rare thing i find. but if the song already has a dope beat then the vocals dont hafta b top-notch for it to be a good song.

Good Vocals vs Great Vocals

I believe that every artist should strive to do their very best when working on their songs. To me it is a glimpse of who they are and how much they take pride in their work. I don't expect perfect vocals, but I do expect better than "good" vocals. I've heard some really great songs with wonderful music and beautiful lyrics and the vocals (to me) were awful. It just killed the song. Quantity is good but Quality is better. It just takes time and training.
