What up, 'Styler's....

I just got my copy of Larry Levan's Paradise Garage (distributed by the now defunct SalSoul Records) and I was wondering if anyone here was a regular of or visited the Paradise Garage from 1977 until the closing of its doors in the mid- 80's.

What kind of place was it? Who were the artist's that performed there? It opened the same year as Studio 54....was there some sort of "battle" between the two spots?

I have a cassette single from from Cynthia (What Will It Take), and there is a Paradise Garage version on it. It's sick!

If anyone could help me out, that would be cool...thanks.

HE promoted back then and would tape the nites for manhattan cable channel.............. The vibe is what I remember... great music great club era.... Hell I stsill have my vip pass for the nites somewhere around... for the afterparty I would head to Dancateria or the Peppermint lounge..... ohhhh the colors LOL

Damn.....Paradise & Danceteria- I would've so been a regular @ those spots. Sounds like nothing but a great, slammin' time. I think the closest I've got to was the Palldium & the Tunnel....and I know Studio & Paradise can't even compare!

Thanks for the stories though......hope to hear some more.

the garage also had a movie theather in it...

There is a new movie out about the Paradise Garage, The Loft and The Gallery nightclubs called "Maestro." It's currently playing at the Quad Theater on 13th Street in NYC.

Really? I'd like to check that out. I'm gonna see if it's playing in Boston at one the independant-movie theatres. Ivan, have you seen it yet?

I went to the sneak preview of that paradise garage flick "maestro" almost 2 years ago, but back then it was still in the works.i was into it but lot of my friends didn't like.i wonder how much have they added to it....
i was way to young for the garage days but my unlce use to go and told me lots of crazy stories he experienced there. i own a few paradise garage larry levan cds and records, plus i have the book "keep on dancing, my life in the paradise garage" by mel cheren which was one of the co-owners of the garage. this book is one of my favorites, a must read! it has a lot of history and drama. filled with scandals at the garage. carlitos you will love this book bro. go pick it up

Yep, I saw the movie last Saturday. It was pretty good and the director was there so he did a Q&A after the film. People in the audience were diehard Garage goers, so they had lots of questions, having lived the time period themselves. There will be a DVD coming out soon that will have tons more footage that didn't make the film version.

If you can get to see it in the theater, though, check it out. He said it will be there until it gets bumped by a Hollywood film. 😉 Also, the director was young and had never been to the Garage, Loft or Gallery, which was interesting. Marlon, Mel Cheren appeared in the movie very briefly. Lots of DJs were interviewed, including Frankie Knuckles, Francois K., and Joey Llanos.

Yep, have the book. Did a story on Mel for DMA back in the day. It's funny, some parts of the movie debunk his theories. You'll see.... Thanks for the heads-up on Whispers. Speaking with them today. I'll keep you posted.
