Question for you freestyle fans!

Do you guys still listen to Electric Funk:

Planet Patrol-Play at your own risk, Cheap Thrills
122 B.P.M. - Jive Rhythm Trax
Jam On It - Newcleus
Siberian Nights & Electric Kingdom - Twilight 22
Computer Age (Push The Button) - Newcleus
R-9 - Cybotron
Planet Rock - Afrika Bambaataa & The Soul Sonic Force
Clear - Cybotron
Al-Naafiysh (The Soul) - Hashim
ETC...

I think that type of music is the backbone of freestyle. There are numerous freestyle artists who used these elements in their songs, but one that stands out would be the Planet Rock beat which we all know about, but to me this style is still going strong regardless of how old it is. I remember back in 1994 I gave a tape to some breakdancers over in McAteer high in San Fran, and they were shocked on how good this old school shit was, and even some of the tracks was new to them. To me this Electric Funk will always be a part of freestyle that was forgotten about, but the legend still lives on with tracks that can never be touched!

If you watched TV, you can remember back when "Home Turf" was popping that was set off by the song "Jam on it"

And even Collage sampled "Push the botton" with that song Jocelyn, and he also redid "Cheap Thrills" by Planet Patrol.

And I'm sure I can go on and on with the sampling that freestyle derived with this electric funk. One jam to me that will never die is "Play at your own Risk". Thats a track that can never be touched! Long live these tracks!

And how can I forget my 2nd favorite track "Party Has Begun", The - Free Style
The Dream Team - L.A. Dream Team

Surgery - The Wreckin' Cru , even one of the strongest westcoast rapper/producer started out with these fast upbeat tracks, but flipped the script once he joined NWA. yes yall the mighty "Dr Dre".

I miss the NYC electro-funk so much!

You're The One For Me, Music, Keep On - "D" Train
(Keep In Touch) Body To Body - Shades Of Love
Body Music - The Strikers
On The Upside - Xena
The Music's Got Me - Visual
Don't Make Me Wait - NYC Peech Boys

Damn, that was good shyt! :spin

Funny shit is, the majority, if all, of the earlier artists that had that "electro-ish, freestyle" sound were of African-American decent, and not Latino or Italian. Plus, many of the producers were non-Latino. But the one's who were bumpin' to the sound were "urbanites", if you will.

All I fiend for is the old shit. Let's take it back to the days where parties were parties, whether in the park or at the local skating rink (Skate Key, Bronx, NYC).

I don't know if you consider this electo-funk, but a fave of mine is "Remember What You Like" by Jenny Burton.

omg time stops when i hear that stuff on the radio..... i go off & my kids laugh..... :dancingb

They don't make electro like back in the day anymore. I guess it would sound a bit dated today. But the original old school tracks never lose it.

Yes, I still listen to Electro-Electronic Funk-Electro Pop. It will always hold a special place in my heart. It is the backbone of Freestyle but also influenced greatly Techno, House, Trance, Drum N Bass etc. etc. and yes, Hip Hop (Planet Rock, Play at Your Own Risk)! Electro Funk in the early 80s was an important revolutionary movement that coincided with the "computer age" or "electronic age".

Kraftwerk-Computer Love
D-Train-You're the one for Me
Afrika Bambaataa-Planet Rock (The godfather of Hip Hop!)
Yazoo-Don't Go/Situation
Rocker's Revenge-Walking on Sunshine
Man Parrish-Hip Hop Be Bop
C-Bank-One More Shot/Get Wet
Freeez-I.O.U./Pop Goes My Love
Newcleus-Jam on Revenge/Jam on it
New Order-Confusion
George Kranz-Din Daa Daa
Xena-On the Upside
Dominatrix-Dominatrix Sleeps Tonight
Jonzun Crew-Space is the Place
Cybotron-Cosmic Raindance/Clear
John Rocca-I Want it to Be Real
Jenny Burton-I Remember What You Look Like
Egyptian Lover-Egypt/What is a DJ if He can't Scratch?/And My Beat Goes on
Aleem-Release Yourself
Jay Novelle-If this Ain't Love
Tina B-Bodyguard/Honey to a Bee
Pretty Tony-Fix it in the mix
Goon Squad-Eight arms to Hold You/Powerdrill

Some Vanity 6, Zapp and Roger, World Class, Mantronix, Full Force

Man, those were the days. FREESTYLE itself is so creative, different, beautiful. Some of my friends told me, "Why do you like Freestyle?" "How Can you listen to it?" "Who cares about it!" Hey, Freestyle can be found on many of your pop/rock/hip hop songs. It's still here. Just because you thought it died in the 80s doesn't make its kapeesh. Like Disco, it lives on-in the people and the music. Back in the 80s, almost every danceable tune had Freestyle and Electro elements in it (Yes, Madonna, Janet, you name it). So before you become ignorant, know the importance of Freestyle music back then and now. It has changed the music world and forever will.
