The Gay Lord of Freestyle
The NJ state Senate yesterday passed one of the strongest gay rights bills in the country, granting same sex couples many of the same finincial and legal benefits as married couples.
The act gives same sex couples many of the legal rights given to married couples, like hospital visitation, making emergency medical decisions, claiming each other as exemptions on the state income tax filings, and exemptions from inheiritance tax. It also requires the state to provide dependent health care coverage to employees with same sex partners, and allows private companies to do the same.
For many couples, the law's biggest advantage is the provision that allows hospital visitation, and the making of medical decisions by partners, who in the past have been turned away because they are not legally married to the patient.
