I'm already finished with this new 92.3 NOW station. I gave it a good 3 hours of my time, and I've decided that I have no interest in becoming a regular listener of this station. I'm sure some of you will think that I am passing judgement on this station too quickly, but I don't think so. I'll tell you why.
I remember back in '96 when the "New KTU" signed on the air. After listening to KTU for the first 10 minutes I was really excited, and after 30 minutes I already knew that the "New KTU" was my new favorite radio station. I drove around all night blasting KTU, and I called everyone I knew to tell them the great news! That's how I want to react when a new FM station signs on the air in New York! Listening to 92.3 NOW for 3 whole hours, I felt NO excitement at all. It was more like... "OK, just a new station trying to imitate Z-100. Another station playing the same songs and artists we already hear on Z-100 and many other stations". (By the way, I'm not a KTU fan anymore either)
I just sent my comments to the station through their website, and my exact message is shown below:
"So, now NYC has another station playing the same songs & artists that we already hear on Z-100, KTU, Hot 97, and dozens of other stations around the country. What's the point in that?? I think New York needs something new and different on the FM dial. A station that plays genres of music that cannot be found anywhere else on the radio. We DON'T need another replica of Z-100 or WKTU! I predict that 92.3 NOW will soon be 92.3 GONE!!" 😡
I understand your point of view. It's funny that you mention KTU'S debut on the NY airwaves. I was in NY around that time and I blasted out of my car's rockford fosgates. LOL I could never see myself doing that. Every third song KTU played was a freestyle song. Even though LiL Suzy's Take me in you arms" and Collage "I'll be loving you" were a few years old KTU played those songs as current and they were on top of their playlists.
Back to the topic. KTU was different from everything else on the radio at that time in NY. IT was exciting to listen too. Radio is so different now.
Most teens don't give radio a chance. They rather listen to their I-Pod,MP3'S etc. Hell,Im not a teen and I don't listen to radio. This is coming from someone who listened to radio day and night.
This is the logic of why NOW is playing the same hits from the same artists repeatedly because they want to make sure than when someone tunes in they catch a hit song on the new station in town. They are also playing 10,000 songs in a row so when Z plays commercials people will tune into NOW which will only be playing music.
NOW seems to play lots of rhythmic pop/r&b much more than Z. This is just the beginning once they get settled they will expand their playlists.
