I thank napster for its ability to get me songs that I was told were discontinued or unavailable from record companies. I am tired of spending time and calling all over the US, europe, canada, etc. looking for disks and songs only to be told its discontinued, only comes on 12", etc. (sorry, I appreciate the 12" but I no longer have a turntable courtesty of my house-cleaning mom). And although I use my burner, I still buy disks. I especially buy mixed disks. Nothing can replace the quality and excitement of a storebought disk.

Secondly, they are fighting a loosing battle. Computers and the internet are music and video's worst enemy. Where there is a will theres a way. And this is only the tip of the iceberg. If NAP goes, thats ok. Its the best software out there in terms of convenience and use ...but its not the only. NAP got caught because they use central servers for their meeting grounds. PTP is undetectable. The new breed has arrived. And even if they took away every source of software, people will result to webpages, chat rooms (i know its crazy but still) and email (sure it takes longer but it works). People are people....they will find a way. The smartest get there first and create, and the rest follow.

worst enemy, huh? well, i think think that sooner or later record companies may become redundant due to the internet, but don't we all hate the big six?
i think the artits CAN profit from the internet; I'm not so sure about the record companiez.

Pazzo. Yes..your thought on redundant record companies may become true. They are now a middle man in this game. As for the artists benefitting....i agree and disagree. Yes if they directly dealt with the internet getting their music to fans...they stand to benefit. I would rather purchase a disk from the artist than one from the record company...to only find out...hey we cant get that, or no its not available anymore. But you also have to remember this. If people can get it for free they will. All it takes is 1 copy of a song...mp3...to hit the internet...everyone will have it for free. So all it really takes in 1 purchased disk...and thats not much profit for an artist. But then again....there are still plenty of people not on the internet, who dont have burners or can be bothered sitting in front of their computer to download a song. Especially anything slower than cable, dsl, t1 and t3. They got to big for their britches and now its all gonna come to a crashing halt. They will now have to compete with artists directly. Power to the artists!! : )

well, but the ppl who are buying music now, d'ya think they'll all of a sudden start burning their own cds stead a buying em? i mean, even if i had a cd burner, i'd only burn those trax i cant get hold of!

the record companiez are the worst enemi of independent artists! if you're a real fan, you're gonna buy the CD even if you can download the whole CD for free!

I actually still buy cds even though i can get the whole thing off the internet. I only burn the songs i cant get anymore or full length of versions of songs i heard on mixes that are not available. Frankly, I dont care what kind of computer, burner or cds a person uses. You dont get the same quality as a manufactured, store bought disk.

yeah, quality is probably also an issue, but the CDs you get in a store also look nicer, dont dhey?

fate of napster

What do all the members of CF plan on using to share their music and spread the freestyle? Tomorrow is the scheduled date for the court ruling on napster. If the court order is approved and napster's stay is rejected they will be shut down. I am just curious as to what others have chosen.

I do support artists and purchase cds to a point. But yes...in previewing comps there are definitely 2 good songs and you get screwed paying $20 bucks for it. And if your lucky to get the single...which doesnt happen in the case of freestyle...they try to make up for it by declaring it an import and charging $10 bucks. But it is definitely great exposure for upstart bands and artists who want to be noticed. I download what I cant get in the stores. If stuff is out of distribution...they have to come up with another way to get it to the public. You should have seen what I went through to get an original safire disk. Napster filled that void. But Im not worried.

All I know is that I'm sick & tired of Record Companies telling me what I wanna hear...

Why should I buy a CD album that has only three good songs and twenty pieces of junk along with it.

The only reason why they want Napster dead is because it will affect the Fat Cats lifestyles...

From what I hear there are many Napster clones out there & in the works as we speak...

Napster just got to big...

There are many sides to the saga. Napster only got caught because they had servers, were soooo user friendly and so many people were on it....that the libraries are huge. Good word spreads fast. But they are being given a "second" chance to clean up...by blocking copyrighted materials. If this fails...then they will be given the shoe. Independent material will still be available.

As for the napster "clones"....yes..there are clones. But they differ in use and are called ptp (peer-to-peer) networks. You download the software and dial into another computer....who is connected to another computer....connected to another computer and so on. A daisy-chain of computers. So it is undetectible. But the BIG labels already know of the software but have no way of proving that people are violating copyright...as they can't "see" what your doing...and individuals cant be sued by them for it. So they are going after the hosts of the sites like Gnutella....to have the software removed...so that we wont download it. And its not just MP3 that are passing through these ptp sites. Its all audio, visual, media...etc. One big problem....unless you install a firewall...your computer is free pickins. And it is extremely easy to get viruses. Gnutella already has a virus spread around. So use caution when using them.
