Hall Of Fame!

Sweet Sensation-The best freestyle "girl group"! All 5 of the singles released from their debut album hit the Billboard Hot 100. 3 more singles from their "Love Child" album also hit the Hot 100. Chosen to open for New Kids On The Block.

TKA-The best freestyle "boy band". Consistent hitmakers on the dance charts, 3 successful albums.

Stevie B.-Successful as a performer and producer. First two albums went gold, produced solid hit for Jaya (If You Leave Me Now)

George Lamond-True talent. Debut album had 5-6 solid hits off it, second album was successful too. Great live performer.

Cynthia-Continues to support freestyle. Has at least 8 hits on the Billboard Dance Charts. Great Voice.

Judy Torres-Talented vocalist, great stage presence, still promotes freestyle in NYC.

Expose`-First Freestyle girl group. Crossover success helped other freestyle singles get airplay on radio. Debut album sold over 1 million copies. Follow up album did just as well, with freestyle lead off single "What You Don't Know".

Johnny O. His solo singles are classics, and his duet with Cynthia pushed freestle over the edge.

Nyasia-Distinctive voice and great stage presence. At a time when freestyle was diminishing in popularity, she scored two huge freestyle hits ("Now and Forever & "Who's Got Your Love")

Lisette Melendez-Also managed to score hits during the "slump" in freestyle. Her sound was considered "new school" and got freestyle major airplay.

The forefathers

I wanna do my list to the forefathers of freestyle. Not too many people remember them, but if it weren’t for them, there would be no freestyle...

1. John "Jellybean" Benitez - Ran the Funhouse for a long time. Originally a straight up disco dj, he practically invented the genre with his big time hit "The Mexican" which was an "electro" remix of the classic song by the Bombers ...

2. Afrika Bambata - Had a key hit "Planet Rock" where most of the later popular Freestyle hits based their beats on. The "Planet Rock" beats can be heard on most of STEVIE B's and the MicMak record label.

3. Arthur Baker - Strengthen the genre by creating a break beat type pattern on his songs and using synth and drum machines. His biggest hits included, "Got to be real" by John Rocca and "Crash goes love" by Loleeta Holloway.

4. The Latin Rascals - Had one of the first techno/electro/freestyle songs ever with their hit "The Soul" on cutting records. Very influential mix show on the original 92 KTU

5. "Little" Louie Vega - Is the father DJ to the freestyle genre. After the FunHouse had closed, there was a void in club scene for Latinos. Manhattan clubs didn't cater to us and low and behold, a young DJ out of the Bronx was asked to spin for a Latino crowd at the new club called "The Devils Nest" on Tremont and Webster (Formally know as the Feva). By this time, the genre has gotten to be know as "Freestyle". Before this time, it had no name. Louie's first big hit was "Running" by Info Society.

6. India - One of the first Freestyle divas that had many hits. Her singing career dated way back to the days of the Funhouse where she did "Dancing on the fire" for Jellybean.

7. TKA - Master Vocalists and song arrangers, with many hits (as you all know). The vocals on their records were hot, but just play the B sides and you would have some of the most innovative and powerful dub versions you have ever heard.

8. Todd Terry - Was among the first to use samples, editing and transforming. His be freestlye hit was "Alrigh, alright". Many others after copied his style and began to use repetitive samples in their records. The sample sounds faster is Todd.

9. Roman Ricardo - One of the first big room Freestyle DJ's in NYC. He spun his Saturday nights at 1018 (now know as the Roxy) to an audience of 3 - 4,000 people! This was back in a time where you would hear Freestyle, House and Hip Hop all under the same roof. Roman Ricardo also produced and mixed Noel's "Silent Morning".

10. Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam - Had a huge hit the "Take Me home" that got massive radio exposure and exposed more of the genre to the public at large. But make no mistake about it "Take Me Home" was first and foremost a club hit. In fact, It was almost a year before the song got air play.
