Here's the song "Weakness of the Body" by Mariah Carey, which she sang for Brenda K Starr, in its original key. You can clearly hear that the ENTIRE song is Mariah.

Way before Mariah even had a deal, she sang on the demo for this track back in 1986. Originally supposed to be recorded by 80s freestyle artist Brenda K. Starr, for whom Mariah had sang backing vocals for (and also covered one of her tracks "I Still Believe"), the song was eventually recorded by Judy Torres.

Here are both versions.

Mariah by herself.

Hear the difference for yourself, I think both are good.

This track has been available online & on YouTube for some years.
I love playing it for friends & family as a "Guessing Game".
Only my bro & a few others got it right, lol.
Great post! 😉

I never thought I would have ever heard a comparison of Brenda K. Starr and Mariah Carrey in which Brenda's Voice actually sounds better. I know Mariah is way better sounding than Brenda but I gotta say that in this comparison Brenda's voice is just better. When you compare both "I Still Believe" versions it is not hard to figure out that Mariah has more vocal reach therefore more vocal domination plus a way way better sounding voice. I think that there is no better singer than Mariah Carrey but then again I would like to be proven wrong.

And as far as the title of this post, I don't think it is save to say that this is freestyle, it is not. It is simply top40 pop music from the mid 80's. Back then, it was popular to use those synth bells and high pitched snares. Something that freestyle music has kept as one of its identifying musical elements.
