And Another Thing.....

Johnny...Of Course People Are Going To Request The Commercial Freestyle More Than The New Stuff. People Don't Know About The New Stuff...They Don't Even Know The Artists Or Anything..Thats Why You Have Most Of Those Same People Commin 2 This Board Askin " Yo Who Sang Or Sings This Song " And So Forth.....Its All About The Promotion...Its Bein Done...But Very Little....I guess Better Than Nothin :I

WOW I Can't Believe I Forgot About JOEY FAMULARI AND NORRTY COTTO...97.9......They Kicked Ass And Played It All...They Took Over Where HOT 97 Left off At......I GURANTEE If MEGA WAS STILL DOING THIER FREESTYLE SHOWS...KTU WOULD BE IN TROUBLE.......THATS 100%

you are a funny guy... i grew up listening to Hot 103, i loved the station, but the stations isn't around anymore for a reason....it never evolved. It was a freestyle station that only played freestyle. Yes, freestyle music was hot at the time, but they never ventured out into other types of "dance" music. Here at KTU, we have a formula that seems to work,...give you the dance music u want with a variety of other po, rhythm, r&b type stuff, and you will be happy. As the ratings show, it seems to be a good formula. I am not bashing what Hot 103/Hot 97 did, but giving away $97 doesn't really blow me away. Here at KTU, we give away millions of dollars, more tickets then anyone in the market, have the most successful holiday show ever (Miracle on 34th street), cars, trips, etc...we give it all away. We broadcast from the biggest and best clubs in the market and have the top of crop DJ's...I guess what i am trying to say is that i understand u loved the old hot 103, but times have changed, its a corperate world, and money controls radio, so the days of do what cha want and see if it sticks is gone, now its do it and DO IT RIGHT!!

jeffzktu:
It was a freestyle station that only played freestyle

thats what i say BUT someone disagrees with me!!! 🙂

j/k......i know thery played a variety, but at one point, it seemd that all that HOT 97 played was FREESTYLE! (ahh....those were the days!!)

JEFFZKTU

FIRST OFF, WELCOME.. FOR THOSE WHO DONT KNOW, I GUESS WE CAN SAY JEFFZ (KTU) IS REPRESENTING THE FRONT OFFICE OF THE CORPORATE RADIO WORLD. IT'S COOL TO SEE POST(S) REPRESENTING THE OTHER END OF THE ISSUE. YOU KEPT IT REAL IN YOUR POST, THAT WAS COOL...

To the KTU guy. ...Hot 103, and hot 97, as already mentioned, ventured out into ALL types of dance music at the time. It was NOT an all freestyle station...I've got plenty of tapes to prove it. Freestyle was hot back then, so of course it got alot of airplay...but it wasn't the only thing played. You mention the big money and tickets that are given away...who cares!! We are talking about freestyle....not tickets! I also listen to KTU at selective times only. And even then I don't bother half the time. Hot 103/97 played "only" 4 hours of their dance party back then, but guess what? It was commercial free!! Not these 27 minute TAPED segments.... that's why you can never deliver the same "feel" on a saturday night....We know we can't go back to 88'...but just admit that you have very strict agendas...don't even think about downplaying the old KTU.....ok..I've said enough!!

Hey Victor,

I only do the freestyle mixes for KTU, so its hard for me to answer all these debates. Although I know most of the answers, I think its better you hear it from a KTU program director which is why i told Jeff Z about this post.

You are obviously a HUGE freestyle fan and a true dedicated fan and I respect that. I don't disagree with the majority of your points. (Maybe i disagree with the order of some of the songs you listed in your top 10 for 1991)...lol....But in 1996, of course there were a few freestyle songs that deserved radio play, but there wasn't quality freestyle like it was in 1989...that is what i meant. In 1988, the radio PD was saying to himself "Ok, look at all these great freestyle songs, we really gotta play freestyle". In 1996 he was looking at songs like "Be sure", "Diana", and "Sweetheart" as some of the biggest freestyle songs out at the time. Of the songs you listed, the Cynthia definitely was a radio song (it got bigtime airplay on Power 96 in Miami at that time) Maybe the Lamond, Rochelle and Coro could of been radio hits...maybe. Just because Mega played them once a week in a mixshow doesn't qualify it for a radio add. There is a big difference between a song that deserves radio play and mixshow play. Why didn't Mega add those songs ??? I recently went to dinner with Laura Enea and I was talking about "Can we find a way" to her and she said it herself she didn't like the song. But you see what i mean...look at the quality of freestlye you listed for 1996..compared to 7 years before. The music obviously declined. It was no longer at a demand. Because of all the cheese that was released in that time period i think it damaged those few good songs that deserved better.

I also agree with Jeff Z when he said that freestyle didn't evolve. He is absolutely correct. Sure to the hardcore fan, we think it evolved from old school "Come into my arms" to new school "Together Forever"...but to the average listener, its the same sound. And because freestyle didn't evolve and Hot 103/97 finally realized they were playing the same kind of music for 6 years, they decided to change formats, and succeeded bigtime for it. Instead of bashing KTU, why is nobody bashing Hot 103/97 for giving up on freestyle and basically saying 'freestyle no longer deserves radio play" by changing formats ????

In regards to the new artists you mentioned, I don't give my opinions of artists on a public forum but feel free to email me at Johnnyb@clubfreestyle.com if you would like my answers on that matter.

But on a good note, thanks for supporting my shows on Saturday and Sunday nights ! For the record, I'm on Mondays and Fridays now for the lunch mixes....😀 lol.

BOTTOM LINE

Bottom line is that FREESTYLE is not played as much as it was back in the HOT 103 days. AND THAT SUCKS!!!! But thanks to those corporate pencil pushers (who probably can't dance to a beat if it came up to them and bit'em) and to the NO FRILLS record labels who came out and tried to cash in on FREESTYLE by producing cheesy FREESTYLE music.....sad to say.....FREESTYLE left the airwaves. BUT, we do have KTU and of course.....JOHNNY BUDZ, who still provide us with all the true and real FREESTYLE music, to thank for by providing us with our passion of FREESTYLE. What Vic said was right.......what about House music. It was hot back then but it is not played as much as FREESTYLE is played. I am a FREESTYLE Fanatic Fan but I also enjoyed House music as much......remember....."I'LL HOUSE YOU" or "THIS IS ACID".....man those were the days or what about "BANGO" by Todd Terry. AHHHHHHHHH....OOPS, sorry got lost in my FREESTYLE world. Anyway, like I was saying, it's a shame that those record labels started pumping out imitations but what we need is to keep supporting those FREESTYLE Artiist who gave us what we FREESTYLE Fans loved so much and and encourage them to keep producing those FREESTYLE songs. I've noticed since being on this forum that there are a lot of younger people listening to FREESTYLE music and loving it. I feel that if we all keep this forum alive and keep spreading the word of FREESTYLE sooner or later, a lot of people will request FREESTYLE songs and maybe just maybe encourage the corporate world to produce new FREESTYLE tracks and bring FREESTYLE back to where it belongs.....ON TOP OF THE CHARTS.

Hey Johnny......how bout you getting your own radio station and playing FREESTYLE music 24/7..........lol...lol....Hey, you never know!

old hot 97

I remember hot 97 was da bomb back in the day. I met Angie Martinez and she was so different than what she is today, but hey i don't hate her for changing with the times. I won many things for hot 97, all the club concert at the jersey shore, the clubs in NYC. Just thinking back on those days makes me want to shed a tear so many good memories about hot 97, chilling out with your friends listening to cynthia, judy, noel one after another all day, and night now with ktu we get our lunch time freestyle fixes and friday or Sat night mixes. But all us freestyles nuts should be happy we still hear all of our favorite artists on the radio. Everytime you hear a good soon what do u say "OH MY GOD U REMEMBER THAT". Anyway just be happy that we still get to hear all of freestyle classics. I quess all good things must come to a end....

B91

Guuurrrl You did it to me I remember B91 they definately played the underground freestlye that even 103 didnt play. If anyone wants to dispute that go on. Anyway me and my friend Iliana used to call that station all the time and got to know the DJ well. I thought I was the only one that knew about that station.

Since last week, I have been listening to tapes of the Hot 103 Saturday Night Dance Party and they were really awesome. I really miss those days!! And for those of you that remember B91, I have some tapes from there too and they played a lot of great freestyle. Nothing could replace those days when freestyle was really alive and kicking!

just a little fact for you guys -

In new york, WPLJ and Z100 played freestyle music. I have their playlist to prove me right. I still have old issues of Billboard Magazine , and Perhaps some may remember. Billboard would list the top radio stations across the country and the current (at the time) playlist.

In WPLJ and Z100 case, they played the most popular songs that were crossing over into TOP 40 radion across the country. For example according to the information I have , they played music by

Safire
Sweet Sensation
Cover Girls

Of couse these artist get a major boast because they were signed on by major labels.

Artist like

Cynthia
Judy Torres
Johnny O

were not getting the same airplay on major TOP 40 radios, just dance stations.
