i was listening to the afternoon show on Wktu yesterday and they mention a certain artist will be receiving a "freestyle hall of fame award" at this years "freestyle free 4 all" concert tonight at the taj mahal in atlantic city.
no names were mention, but they did say "she". this artist is not aware of this presentation.
now through the process of elimination lets figure out who could it be - here are my thoughts - these are the females set to perform
judy torres - nah, she receive one a few years back
nancy martinez - nah, shes no longer in the line up
debbie deb - although i like her, not sure if she really made a impact
sweet sensation - the dj's did say "she", i take it as one person
cover girls - same reason as above, plus they are not the original gals
lisette melendez - i dont see this happening for several reasons
joyce simms - dont really consider her freestyle
my pick, my girl, the legend :
Safire - in the business over 20 years, one of the pioneers of freestyle who started it all, once dubbed " the queen of latin hip hop ", massive success, highly respected, and still kicks ass with her stage performance,

my, my carlito, such language - lol

not sure, but from the pictures i've seen , it looks like it ktu was presenting safire with the honor.

Yeah, excuse my language. I've been trying to tone it down.

I'm curious to know what the factors were that led them to choose who they chose.

Regardless, congrat's to Safire & Coro. Safire's "Don't Break My Heart" brings me back to those community room, basement parties back in the Soundview Projects (BX) when I was only 11.

Its according to how long they have been in the business with the amount of songs they have released.

I was hoping Debbie Deb would have gotten the award! 🙁

i think the gesture of getting these awards is a great thing on the part of the ktu's of the world .i just don't want any of the other groups out there with long track records to be over looked just cause they don't appear on all the ktu events.
they beat us too the punch on making a hall of fame so many promoters get us to do these event but never thought of actually give out awards no fan site ever gave out and actual award to any of its favs .
all my peers deserve these awards there ain't one who does not for all the hard work and bullshit they have gone through .
i applaud safire and coro congrats to you both.
and too all those who love and care cherish what you have give it the love it deserves so that when its gone you don't feel like you could have done more

Kay ...now I know you have worked in both new york radio stations hot 97 and ktu 103.5 so you know the bussness very well....what I dont understand is...

why doesnt garbage ktu play or support any new freestyle or dance music artist?

heres my take on it.....both freestyle and hip hop started in the same neighborhoods here in nyc around the same time (although hip hop in its true begining was rhymen over 70s disco/funk/dance beats)late70s and freestyle (although not called freestyle at the time began in the late 70s/early 80s)...both have very similiar and different elements...
But have you ever wondered.....why hip hop has gone so much further then freestyle since they both began?.......Now mind you both began to get popular in the mid to late 80s....at the time freestyle and hip hop was true to its roots which of course were the the streets...and this was an absoulte INCREDIBLE time for both music forms...so much talent and creativity came out but never realy got the true credit it deserverd....now the blacks created hip hop...and the puerto ricans created freestyle.....

Now even during this time mid/late 80s.....when freestyle had ALOT of hits....
we never knew how the artist looked liked? I always wondered back then how all these groups i loved looked like...corina, solid, tonasia, &more, souve, facination, judy torres,tka...etc etc.....since they had no music videos ...Now hip hop at least had video music box a show here in nyc that would play 1 hour a day everyday from 3pm to 4pm and play hip hop videos from boogie down productions/cool g rap/mc shan/big daddy kane/etc etc...

At the time MTV would not play anything from black or latino artist...it was against there policy...all these cd dance complications that were coming out at the time...most of them never had any freestyle on it...now why is that?
I mean freestyle had so many hits in the late 80s early 90s so why wasnt any of these cd dance complications putting a freestyle song on them? why did none of these artist videos every get any tv play?

why? because they were hispanic plain and simple....it was a racist situation then ....and still is a racist situation today...

Now the blacks were having the same problem when it came to hip hop...but they had guys like Russel Simmons step up to the plate and make there voice heard...
Freestyle had no one to step up to the plate and make there voice heard...and thats very unfortnate....
even pop artist of the time...janet jackson, jody watley, taylor dayne..etc..got there music style from freestyle...freestyle was the hotness at that time....and all these pop artist were copying freestyle beats, rhythems, etc etc.....but freestyle was getting little to no credit for all it did at the time and continued doing....why? because they were just looked at as a bunch of puerto ricans....
who never steped up to the plate and made there voice heard and get the credit they deserve when it came to freestyle....or even just music in general....
the music they created was basicaly taken from them...and they were never creadited for it.....sad but true

Look at radio today is completly dominated by Rap and R&B....black stations like hot 97 will never or rarely ever play a artist that is white or latino
yet white stations like 103.5 all they play for the most part is black artist...
why? because blacks realy stuck together and made there voice heard when it came to music..some thing the hispanics did not do when it came to freestyle....

I mean i was just looking at the nu image my space web page...
and i see all these great freestyle artist and producers...mkg, pompeo, mickey garcia, cynthia, dave mendez....etc

yet it seems like nothing is going on the freestyle world...no new music....no new cd singles ...with great accapellas, 8 minute club mixes, bonus beats, dubs
they way they use to back in the 12inch vinyl days....

No new freestyle being created .....radio like KTU is boring repetive and stale....
Seems like everyone says yea i got this coming out i got that coming out...i am working on this that and the other...but theres realy no freestyle out there....nothing realy happening regardless of what these people are saying there doing..at the end nothing comes out......all you hear is yea this project is in the works but in the end the project never materlizes into anything...

At least the house community, trance community has a voice....even though they dont get any radio air play either like freestyle.....at least new house, trance music continues to be made and released on the under ground level.
Freestyle for the most part has nothing......

its an acheivment award -

Safire's award was rightfully deserved - if you know her history in the business, you would know of her many accomplishments.

I could come up with a list of other artists who should've received this honor before Coro.

Typically the artists who were on a major label had the advantage over other freestyle artists like judy torres, cynthia.

Safire, cover girls, sweet sensation, tka, george lamond, brenda k. starr to name a few and music videos shown on mtv internacional, friday night videos, vh1, etc.. and they appear on dance shows, talk shows, entertaiment shows across the country and the music crossed over to top 40 radio stations. It was happening.

unfortunately it was just the sound for the moment, much like disco music. freestyle enjoyed a good 7 years of popularity.

Dag, I keep reading the same ol posts over again. *sigh*
Anyway, it's just an award of recognition to one person. Not the keys to the city or pulitzer. I'm sure whatever the process to pick someone it must've been a cover your eyes and pick type of way. Not that any of the recipients didn't deserve the recognition. A lot of these artists do. But no one is in charge of naming anybody in Freestyle (or whatever dance/club music too) for a prestigous award. If so, it probably would've been done a different way. *add my two cents smilie here*

Congrats To Coro & Safire...
I Do Beleive That All Of Our Legends Should Be Recognized For Their Accomplishments And Don't Let This Get You (artists) Down! Your Fans That Meet And Greet You Every Show Tell You And Show You How Much You Mean And That Does And Should Count For Something. Keep Rockin!

Also, We Should Appriciate The Radio Stations Like Ktu Because They R One Of The Few That Play Freestyle. Just Omagine If They Didn't Play Any...

Just My Opinion-not Intended Or Directed To Anyone In Particular.
Thanks!
