Now you are going to have a 2 hour OLD SCHOOL Hip-Hop show (There is no school like the old school) hosted by one of the most knowledgible Old School heads in your area...MC Search.

So yo - embrace this great opportunity that you have to hear some great TRUE Hip-Hop classics,and Freestyle all on one station and stop the whining already!!!

Down hear in Philly the only Freestyle you hear is Lil' Suzy's TAKE ME IN YOUR ARMS, Collage's I'LL BE LOVING YOU, Stevie B' SPRING LOVE and Rockell's version of IN A DREAM...

During the 12 Noon Workout mix you may hear 1 or 2 other Freestyle classics (Exposé, Lisette Melendez, George LaMond, Coro, etc.) but that it is all we get from a station that claims to not only be a dance station, but a sister station of KTU as well...Q102. In reality they are nothing more that a Pop/Top 40 station that plays whatever Carson Dailey plays on MTV's TRL...

Just a few quick things, for those of you that are excited about the show, I know we will not disappoint you...And the others, we can't make everyone happy all the time, but u still have your freestyle right...As for not getting a meeting to play any of your new freestyle, here is your invite...we NEVER turn ANYONE down from a thursday music meeting call, no matter what label. We meet at least 30 to 40 people a year that come up here with stuff that is not signed to ANY label. So that is just a lazy way of saying u never really tried.
I love that this board keeps freestyle fans excited, keep up the good work..

And, so you know ... a lot of the old school hip hop was played ALONG with freestyle. Just go look at some of your old mix tapes, and you'll always see a hip hop song thrown in there ... remember, this is when hip hop was ENJOYABLE !

I can't remember HOW many times back in 1990/91 I'd turn 'The Box' (remember that channel??) on and see 3rd Bass ALL OVER THE PLACE !!

Can't wait to listen to the show !

Hey Jeff you got to be kidding. Lazy??? You got it wrong man. I have met you before when I used to be able to get in the KTU office back in 96. Now everytime I leave a message so that I can set up an appointment I never get a call back. And let me tell you its been almost a year since I've been trying to set up an appointment with Geronimo for the last single I put out. Last person I met up with was Andy Shane. I didnt even have to make an appointment with him. And tell me, what was the last Freestyle song you guys added that wasnt backed up by a major? Dont think I am attacking you or anything. I have met you a couple of times. Last time was over at Johnny's house. You seem like a cool guy. But I see this is the only way I can truly get answers. I had a record playing in alot mixshows around the country, (power 96 in miami, Wild 94.9 in san jose, KTU in New york "thanks johnny", stations in texas, mass, ct., canada, PA., Jersey, etc...) I flew to Cali to meet with Jazzy Jim, I had no appointment and I still got in. That same weekend I had the song on their mixshow. Now what I didnt understand is why my own hometown didnt even give me a chance to break a local act. Not even a meeting......
 
No one needs another rap station...or segment...or whatever you want to call it. And there is more than 1 station playing old skool. A co-worker of mine knows...because he listens.

And no..ktu does not play freestyle all the time...so we "new yorkers" are not lucky. For what they play I might as well turn MTV at least I'll get the free video.

And as for Jeff at ktu, you say this is a great message board...and its great for keeping freestyle alive and all...and come to ktu's defense...but yet I sent you an email and its status came back as deleted. So please....

Tenent.. you might not know this, but i get alot of emails some garbage, some work, but most of the time, if i don't know who the email is from, I don't open it....There is alot of virus email's out there, and i can't loose half a day waiting for someone to get it off my computer. So sorry if I didn't respond.

As for us not playing enough freestyle...we are not a freestyle station, we are not a classic station, and we are not a rap station either. We are a Top 40 Rhythm/Crossover station. A station that has great success bringing the tri-state the best Pop Dance, Classic Freestyle, Classics, house, and other music that fits New York. We are a station that bleeds this area, plays the history of this area, and now we are able to give you a little more history with the Old School Show. As for not playing enough freestyle, you show me a station in all of America that plays more. There isn't any...Variety is the key to winning!! All music for as many people as we can make happy. Go ahead watch MTV, tell me when they play the next freestyle song, hope u don't hold your breath...

***Jeffzktu, I have a suggestion, even a request.... how about extending the show on sundays by an hour? Start at 8pm instead of 9 and go to midnight, give Johnny B the extra hour so Judy can have from 8-10 and Johnny can have from 10-12?? I KNOW everybody would LOVE another hour of Johhny spinning freestyle.
Also another suggestion would be to make it easier to hear the show online from your home website. Obviously it is being broadcast because I can still hear music after the freestyle show is over, but trying to access your station from your website is like bringing back the dead....

As for everything else, I have no comment because I have no knowledge and so therefore can't contribute, but if you have Norton Antivirus, I'm pretty sure that your emails are scanned for viruses before they end up in your inbox. I know that happens at my job and half the time emails that didn't even have viruses get deleted. Besides that email is a BUSINESS email, and when you are in the communications biz and particularly radio media, you have to accept that you are going to recieve a LOT of correspondence from people you don't know. deleting emails like that is just bad business practice.

You're right Jeff there is no other station that plays freestyle music as much as ktu does. But the freestyle you guys play is old school. with the exception of rockell. And i dont wanna hear that there is no requests for new freestyle. Cause when I had the new Synthia Figueroa single played on Johnny's mix we had alot of people calling KTU requesting it. And I have known many people who worked at KTU picking up phones. They told me they dont even pay mind to requests that arent on the KTU playlist. I called many times myself and they already knew the song when i mentioned her name and they told me that they couldnt play it. Then it was because they didnt have it. I even got hung up on by when i told them to play new freestyle. So there is no winning either way. I just came back from orlando and heard alot of new school stuf i have never heard here. Except for on johnny's mixshow. I guess all we will ever get from KTU is old school. The new school Freestyle artists will never have a chance. I know there is alot of bad new freestyle songs out there. But there is also alot of good ones too. But no one will ever know about them. Time to break new Freestyle. I keep hearing this commercial on KTU saying "First with such and such artist" but in reality i hear alot of those songs on different stations first. Hope some day I'll be able to hear some new school freestyle first on KTU.

Why don't you all list NEW school freestyle songs that you honestly believe deserve to be played regularly on KTU. A song you honestly believe can crossover and become a hit. Forget "I see stars", Paradigm "Back for my Love", Lamond's "Lately"...those songs are done and NO radio station will just start playing it now. So don't list a song thats 1 year old. Also don't include "Tears" by Rockell because Robbins has not released it yet. I'm interested in listening to your requests, because I honestly have trouble finding enough new songs to play on Sunday nights mix show.... so...go for it.

DOWN HERE IN PHILLY THE ONLY "DANCE" STATION WE HAVE DOESN'T EVEN PLAY FREESTYLE EXCEPT FOR A COMMERCIAL SONG HERE AND THERE OH AND LETS NOT FORGET THAT 3 IN DA MORNING SHOW (GEE THANKS)....ANYWAY Q102 WILL BE THE FIRST TO SAY THEY SUPPORT FREESTYLE....MAYBE BACK IN DA DAY TILL THEY DECIDED THEY WANTED TO BE HIP HOP AS IF POWER 99 WEREN'T ENOUGH....AND THEY KILLED FREESTYLE IN PHILLY WITH THAT HIP HOP FORMAT...ANYWAY THE ONLY REASON FREESTYLE IS ALIVE IN PHILLY IS BECAUSE OF THE RECORD BAR WHERE U CAN FIND ALL THE FREESTYLE U WANT...SO WE TURN OFF DA RADIO AND PUMP THE CDS AND THE BACK IN DA DAY TAPES....AND THATS ALL WE HAVE TO KEEP THE FREESTYLE PRIDE ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!
 
New freestyle songs now??? hmmmm well I think most labels gave up already. Since they didnt get any support with radio or sales. Fans always saying they support freestyle but when it came to buying they just never did. Not saying all fans. but come on now. there are almost 1000 members on clubfreestyle, if they only bought 1 each that would keep alot of these labels in business. right now we hardly break even. and as far as radio goes you know how I feel about their support. especially of their local artists.
 
I know that some of you are prolly freaked at this idea but it might be good for KTU. I can understand because slowly but surely Hot 97 began to do this same exact thing. They were a tight freestyle station back in the day when they were Hot 103. (man I'm going back) I am always down for freestyle but truth is most people dont listen to just one style of music. As long is KTU doesn't abandon it's freestly audience I think it's cool

KTU DOESENT PLAY ANY NEW SCHOOL FREESTYLE. THEY HAVE THE POWER TO MAKE SOME OF THESE NEW SONGS HITS BUT DONT USE THEM INSTEAD THEY PLAY WHO LETS THE DOGS OUT FOR THE 10000000000000000000 TIME.
 
JOHNNY, all i meant is that KTU proudly calls itself "the BEAT of NEW YORK" playing dance music, not crossover. and you know the meaning of "crossover" can stand for a large variety of music. that means it can play anything to gospel, dance and rock. yes, i know they play some type of "rock" in a form of a "remix", but i am sure they may have not had any intentions of doing this in the beginning. lets sqaush this Johnny, you know i aint makin any sense!! thats what too much canibus can do to a young mind like mine!
 
variety is good

two hours of old school hiphop sounds great! should bring back a lot of old memories. and if hot97 can play songs by artists like sting/the police, shannon, and joyce simms (their noon shows during the week) then i dont c the big problem with ktu devoting a little time to old school hiphop.
 
Ok, at first I gave KTU the benefit of the doubt but once mentioned what hip hop tracks they planned on playing, I now have different feelings.

When I heard old school on KTU I thought Plant Rock, Play at your Own Risk, Rockers Revenge, Rappers Delight, (you know, the first hip hop tracks that contributed to Latin Hip Hop / Freestyle music NOT Big Daddy Kane, and other rappers who wouldnt be caught dead on stage with Freestyle acts. Being brought up in the Hip Hop Community, running with Zulu Nation and learning the way of hip hop culture by running the streets of East NY in the eighties, I feel somethings just dont go together. Yes its only 2 hours but have you ever heard of the saying "It only takes one time"?
(WOW, SEARCH MUST BE A HELL OF A SALES MAN, wonder why he never got on hot 97?)
Its a shame KTU refuses to listen to the people and go their own route, there is a ninch that needs to be filled and KTU is just teasing us with it.

WELL I AGREE WITH EVERYONE!!!LOL EVERYONE'S VIEW IS EVERYONE'S OPINION. I MYSELF THINK IT'S REALLY COOL THAT THEY ARE GOING TO PLAY OLD SCHOOL HIP HOP. I ALSO AGREE THAT THEY SHOULD ALSO PLAY SOME NEW FREESTYLE SONGS!! AND I DON'T MEAN ONLY ON FREESTYLE MIX DAYS. THEY SHOULD PLAY IT THROUGH OUT THE DAY WITHOUT ANY OTHER FREESTYLE PLAYING ON IT'S SIDE. NEW FREESTYLE SONGS SHOULD BE PLAYED ON UNEXPECTED HOURS, TO SEE IF WE GET ANY RESPONSES.
