Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are dating, PEOPLE has learned. Cruise, 42, and Holmes, 26, "have only been dating a couple of weeks," says a friend of Cruise.

The romance was confirmed by his rep after he and Holmes were photographed together, hand in hand, in Rome on Wednesday evening.

"She's a really genuine person," says the friend. "She's the real deal."

Another source says it was Cruise who made the first move: "He asked her out on a date."

Cruise split with girlfriend Penelope Cruz last year. He and Nicole Kidman, who have two children, divorced in 2001.

Well ET has answered that question she is 5'8 he is 5'7 making her an inch taller than him...no big deal when she ain't wearing heels
